Can a foreigner with a Non-Immigrant B visa switch to an over 50 extension and continue working in Thailand?

A friend of mine is on a non imm B original visa and extension ,(for a BOI company). He wants to leave his current company but still wants to work (either for a Thai company of by setting one up), the question he wants to know is if he can switch to an over 50 extension and Still work,?

thanks James, that was my understanding, its just in another group someone said he could IF his original was non imm b, I was sceptical.
