TLDR : Answer Summary
The necessity for immigration officers to conduct home visits for marriage visa extensions in Thailand appears to vary by individual circumstances and specific immigration offices. Some users reported home visits during the initial application for a marriage-based extension, while others, especially those with longer marriage durations or extensive history in the country, indicated that visits may not occur. It is recommended to directly inquire with the respective immigration office when applying for extensions.

You know, I'm shutting this post down.

1. The OP is using Chonburi Immigration (per an earlier comment), and wants to go from a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Marriage to a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Retirement. "Guardian visa" do not exist.

2. I *DO NOT* know if Chonburi Immigration and Pattaya Immigration is the same. From the comments:

"Harry Martin

I've found (at Pattaya immigration) pals that have changed from retirement to family, and I assume most new family visa extensions, are receiving a initial visit.

Personally, I'm on my fifteenth year and they've never bothered with me."

"Alex J Murphy

I renewed my extension in Mach this year, received a visit from immigration 14 days later where as a witness was required (copy house book and ID, signed). Chon Buri immigration, Jomtien"

3. I'm not sure what the advantage is from going from a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Marriage to a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Retirement. You WILL NEED 800K THB seasoned in a Thai bank account two months before apply and three months after applying, and then after that balance can not go below 400K, unlike a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Marriage where you need 400K THB in Thai bank account seasoned for two months.

I don't see the point in keeping commenting open. If anyone disagrees, message a mod to reopen commenting.

Even for my first ever extension back in April, these was no home visit by Chiang Mai immigration but we went to their office with a neighbour for what really was a very informal chat. That said, I had previously been on non O ME visa for years so I had lots of history.

According to the poster

>We both use Chonburi Immigration in Pattaya

All immigration offices have slightly different policies. What happens in Kanchanaburi may not apply to Chonburi.

Please, only comment if you use Chonburi immigration

In 5 years had only one visit.

It may depend on how long you have been married. As for me, married for 42 years, they are not wasting their time.

I think it's far more where you are and what office you use rather than the length of time you've been married :/ but congrats on 42 years of marriage (y)

Well,
@Ba***
I think you have your answer(s).

And seeing as you never mentioned which of the 70+ immigration offices you go to, I don't know how anyone can pin it down for you. :/

It's totally going to be between you and the immigration office if they come and do a home visit when you apply for a yearly extension based on marriage to a thai during the under consideration period.

Certainly you should ask your immigration officer when you apply for the extension if they're comin' out or not.

Thank you one and all. Still debating. I do have a friend who switched from retirement to marriage but said it was so annoying, he’s thinking of switching back. We both use Chonburi Immigration in Pattaya. Still, it would be nice to free up 400,000 baht.

some offices are some are calling the applicant and telling them to bring witnesses to the immigration office on xxx date, and some are even doing Zoom video calls with you at your house while they're at the office and having you walk them around the place.

All you can do is ask your immigration office when you apply
