Will my bank account be closed if I apply for a DTV visa in Thailand?

I have been told that there is a risk that my Thai bank account will be closed when I apply for DTV-visa.

Can anyone help me find out if this information I correct or not. Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The risk of having a Thai bank account closed when applying for a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is not definitive and varies by individual circumstances. Some users reported no issues maintaining their accounts, even under a DTV, especially if the accounts were opened prior to the stricter regulations. However, banks may close accounts if account holders reveal a change in visa status or if they need to communicate with bank staff regarding their visa. To minimize risks, it is advised to avoid unnecessary contact with the bank unless required and to consider consulting the bank directly about potential impacts of changing to a DTV.

Why should they do that. Don't give them any info unless they ask you. My account was never questioned when I applied for DTV....

Incorrect. Only if you have to visit the bank for something. But then DTV or visa exemption dosn't make any difference

Why are you going to be telling them what your current visa is?

The process of getting the visa won't. But if it frozen for any reason you might not be able to unlock it with a DTV

Go to your branch and ask if switching to DTV will get it closed. I’ve got a guy that opened a bank account long time ago in Phuket as a tourist and it got frozen. The bank told him get a DTV 5-years. I was shocked it could be a case if I didn’t hear it first-hand. This is in no way verified, I’m just passing it over perhaps you also got a chance to continue having it on DTV.

Did it help to ask here?

Answers vary in YES it will be close, NO it stays open, maybe closed depending on bank.

All of the above.

I would say the first stap is walk into your local branch with your bankbook and passport, ask what happens if you change your visa status?

OR call the English speaking helpdesk of your bank.

If you opened it on 2022 even with the new changes and new rules it will not be closed, especially if you have money in, if you open it after the 2022, it could be at risk, if you close it and you try to open it again with the DTV, you will not be able to open it….

I got my Bangkok Bank account in 2017, when I was studying here.

Now I've been on the DTV for a year and a half. My account still works.

But I haven't verified anything new or visited a bank branch since getting the DTV.

Yes, it’s possible, but it’s not guaranteed.

Most of the issues people report happen when they visit a bank branch and staff ask to see their previous work permit. If that permit has expired and they are now on a Destination Thailand Visa without a work permit, the bank may question the account. In some cases, if you tell them you no longer have a work permit, there’s a chance they could close the account.

A simple response some people use is:

“I don’t have the documents with me. I’ll bring them next time.”

Banks usually don’t close accounts unless something triggers it, such as visiting the branch and informing them that you no longer have a work permit.

For context, I’m currently on a Destination Thailand Visa, and I still have three Thai bank accounts that I opened years ago. Two were opened when I had a work permit, and one was opened around 18 years ago when tourists could still open accounts more easily. All three accounts are still active, and I use them every day.

Could they be closed in the future? Possibly. But even if that happened, I could still manage perfectly well using my UK bank accounts and services such as Wise.

No point worrying about something that may or may not happen.

the account you’ve had for a long time is not likely to be closed.

A friend of mine changed from non immigrant OA to DTV and still could keep her account at Bangkok Bank.
