I have obtained a new passport in my country. Now I'm carrying two valid passports when entering Thailand. The new one valid for ten years , the old one valid until Feb. 2026. I'm due

for my extension of stay based on retirement in

August 25. Do I face any issues with immigration for the new extension?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Peter Jaeck has obtained a new passport while still holding an old valid passport and is concerned about potential issues when applying for a retirement extension in Thailand. Comments suggest that he should present both passports during entry, as the old passport may still contain important immigration permits. Following entry, he is advised to transfer any relevant permits to the new passport before applying for the extension.

Unless there is some exceptional circumstances, your old passport is canceled when you get a new passport... Usually by making a hole or stamp?

That you have a Visa or extension with reentry permit in the old one but can still be used and shown when you enter most likely.

My old passport was not invalidated and I entered Thailand on my old passport valid until 01.02.26. I'm due for extension on August 07.08.25 .

, you better talk with your local immigration office in advance. I believe you need an entry stamp on your passport that is used for an extension since your new passport was obtained outside Thailand. Basically, you cannot change foreign valid passports inside Thailand.

In that case, you have to get a new extension on your old (and "current" in Thailand) passport, which means your next extension is until the passport validity, 01 February 2026 instead of August 2026.

Or you leave and enter Thailand again on your new passport, at least one of the ways by air to switch passports.

, yes, if you want to get a full-year extension on your next application. Please talk to your local office to be sure.

totally okay to have a visa/extension/re-entry in an old passport. The passport itself is 'cancelled' when you get the new one but any existing visa/extension/re-entry is still valid

you just have to go to the immigration office where the extension was issued and get the stamps transferred. All the airport will do is stamp you IN on the new one and note the extension/re-entry was in the old one

yes. That's what i said

You show up at the airport present BOTH passports when you stamp in.

They will stamp you in on the new one, noting your extension re-entry permit is in the old one

Then you go to your immigration office (where you got the extension/re-entry permit issued) and get the stamps transferred to the new passport

After that you go apply for your yearly extension like normal in July/Aug

transferring at least in Bangkok it does not require an appointment and it's possibly done without a wait, i think. I think that they can even do it at the same time when you do the renewal, that's what i did during covid. Just ask to be sure.
