Hey guys, I'm leaving Thailand on a visarun tomorrow, however I have a week overstay, because the hospital diagnosed me with appendicitis and I have a medical certificate to prove it. Do you think that will be enough to safely leave the country? I'm afraid it's going to be some kind of issue πŸ˜•

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about leaving Thailand due to a week-long overstay caused by a medical emergency (appendicitis) and is seeking guidance on the implications. Responses emphasize that while a medical certificate is important, it does not exempt the user from paying overstay fines. Many users suggest paying the fine at the border rather than seeking an extension afterward, as immigration has strict rules regarding overstays, regardless of medical emergencies.

We're just going round and round on this. Once you are on overstay there's no doctor's note, no nothing that gets you out of paying for it. Medical extension can be gotten for you by the hospital OR you go get one BEFORE you run into an overstay problem.

Good Luck, (y)

A week overstay is 500x7=3,500. It's not the end of the world, and it doesn't have any other negative consequences as long as you get to immigration or a border first (i.e. the police don't pick you up for some other reason and discover your overstay). Bans come in only after 90 days overstay, as long as you present yourself first.

You will have to pay the overstay either way but you can choose between just going to a border and leaving (and paying the 3,500 there) or going to immigration to get an extension (for which you will pay 3,500+1,900, but should get another 23 days (30 days minus the 7 you have overstayed).

If you have the whole visa run arranged and want to do that anyway, I don't see an advantage to going to immigration and paying an extra 1,900 if you plan to leave immediately anyway. You can pay the overstay fine at the border/airport.

As you mentioned, just go to immigration office asap with the doctor's letter and they should grant you an extension of stay. Problem solved

they will charge her for the overstay and date any extension from the date her original stamp ran out.

If u got travel insurance u send them the receipt from immigration. They will reimburse u.

Garrett Greenwald At least they will pay the 1900 Baht for the extension. πŸ˜€

I don't see anything more constructive coming out of this toplc.

The rules are the rules. You are going to be liable for the overstay fines, doctor's note or not.

You should have got an extension ay the border they will laugh at you. Also the letter must state unfit to travel. I know this mysrlf after getting run over by a concrete truck and spent 3 months 8n hospital

Dear
@C**
, it is not meant to be mean but it is how Immigration works. You get into hospital, yourself if able or the Hospital is applying for an Extension of Stay on medical reasons. That is the way it should be done. Just a letter from a doctor while on overstay showing up at an Immigration Checkpoint is not clearing the overstay. Sorry to bring you news you do not like to hear.

Hey Cat, sorry you were sick. I had that happen to me, too, a few years ago. I was literally bed-ridden for three days, putting me one day over my visa. Not in a hospital, but in a hotel and a doctor had to come out to me. I could barely make it to the bathroom, let alone to an immigration office, so fuck knows who made up that stupid rule because it makes no sense at all! If you were well enough to get to the immigration office and deal with a bunch of paperwork, you'd just take your flight.

I gave them my doctor's certificate and I just had to pay the overstay which I think was about 500 baht. I hope that's all you'll be up against. Good luck.

immigration has a rule. you overstay you pay..end of story...no matter what paper you show...

Guys, let me just remind you all that it would be nice if you would actually read my post and if it's not too much, respond kindly as well. There is no need for treating me as if I'm stupid after i got into a medical emergency the day before my visa expired, after which I was hardly able to walk and I was just following my doctor's advice on my visa (which I'll never do again) . Honestly, it won't kill you to be kind.

Garrett Greenwald I was only referring to YOUR comments hun πŸ˜‰

Garrett Greenwald how about "unhelpful" then? Can't argue with that.

pay the loot for overstay. .job done

As soon as you have a medical issue and facing overstay you take a letter from your medic to Immigration and apply for an Extension of Stay. Doing nothing and just go on overstay to a border and show the statement of a hospital is not the way to do it.
Robert *******
It is not a big problem, pay the overstay, it is just a few days.

I know. I was hardly able to walk the first week, let alone get on a plane or a bus. And it definitely helps when people tell me I have a BIG problem

@Robert ******
lol they really don't. The doctor told me I will be able to leave the country with his letter. Mccormic hospital.
Robert *******
The hospital normally provide that service for you.
Tyson ********
How does one take their letter to Immigration if they're bedridden
Robert *******
I guess the problem is solved, so the only thing you will get from Immigration is if they understand is an Extension of Stay from your last day till the day you got out of hospital and this cost 1.900 Thb than 500 Thb a day that you stayed longer and you still have to leave.
