TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your benefits will stop after 30 days of living outside the U.S., including in Thailand. However, if you are receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you can continue to receive those benefits while living abroad, provided you meet all eligibility requirements. It's essential to notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) of your move and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.

If it's really SSI and not SSDI that you're receiving, you won't be able to collect that if they know that you are living outside the US. However a potentially even bigger problem if you have a disability that requires ongoing medical care is that neither Medicaid nor Medicare will pay for medical care received abroad and you're not going to be eligible for Thailand national healtcare plan.
Randy ********
Just have your mail sent to your family member address or a friend, and that will be your new address. They don't have to know you're out of the country. Come home once a year to your primary doctor for your blood work and physical. Keep that money going to a bank in your country / city and you can withdraw it while you're in Thailand. It's a need to know basis and they don't need to know You're living abroad. Keep your health insurance from SSDI. That's my own personal opinion.

Your SSI benefits will finish after 30 days of being outside the US. Your regular social security payment will not be affected.

Wow, I’m guessing that most of you posting do not have any knowledge of Thailand. Renaldo, yes, as long as you have an income, you will be fine, take a vacation there. The cost of living is very reasonable, medical care is one of the best in the world and you will not be bankrupt. This country is called the land of smiles, and yes, you will be greeted by people that will take care of you.

I’ve been here for seven years, bouncing between Thailand and Malaysia. You rarely ever hear of theft or any killings. Read on the internet about expats abroad, there is a ton of info and I can assure you, most people in this area speaks English and you will meet many expats here.

I hope you well and ignore the people whom are afraid of leaving their home. My wife and I have been traveling for 13 yrs and living life!

Leaving overseas, they will stop your disability because you are not in USA unless you got your retirement you can’t live in overseas and get disability disability. Can stop anytime if you get your Social Security that’s a different case you you can continue living overseas.
Michael ********
If you’re under 67 you continue to get Ssdi, after 67 it converts to regular social security.. call your local office and ask instead of facebook
Joe *********
If you are a U.S. citizen living outside the United States, you can collect Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, but you generally cannot collect Supplemental Security Income (SSI) once you have been abroad for more than 30 consecutive days

In the U.S., Social Security benefits can often be paid to people living outside the United States, depending on the type of benefit, country of residence, and citizenship status. Here’s a breakdown.

1. Retirement Benefits (Social Security Retirement)

• Yes, usually payable abroad.

• U.S. citizens can receive them in most countries.

• Non-citizens may face restrictions depending on their country and whether there’s a Social Security agreement.

2. Disability Benefits (SSDI – Social Security Disability Insurance)

• Yes, payable abroad for both U.S. citizens and some non-citizens.

• Subject to similar rules as retirement benefits.

• Must continue meeting medical eligibility and respond to SSA reviews.

3. Survivor Benefits

(Includes widow/widower, child, and dependent parent benefits)

• Yes, often payable abroad.

• U.S. citizens: Usually no problem.

• Non-citizens: Restrictions vary, especially if from countries without a totalization agreement.

4. Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

• No, NOT payable outside the U.S.

• Payments stop after 30 days abroad and won’t restart until you’re back in the U.S. for 30+ consecutive days.

—————————————————

Key Tip:

Use the SSA’s Payments Abroad Screening Tool to check if your specific benefit can be paid in your country.
Roger ********
Folks, you're getting confused with acronyms. SSDI is still payable and Thailand is a country where you can use direct deposit. This is for the disabled, like me.

SSI Is supplemental income for those with very low incomes. You can only receive that when living in the US or US territories.

SSA is the branch of government that deals with all facets of social security.

Regular retirement social security is payable like SSDI. This is the one folks can start receiving at 62.

Medicare is like SSI and only works in the US and its territories.
Andrew ********
Yes

It depends on a few things. SSI no never. SSD yes if your drawing from your own contributions not from someone else's benefits. So it depends on exactly what benefit you are getting hence the people answering with very different answers

A Social Security redetermination is a periodic review of an individual's eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, focusing on non-medical factors like income, resources, and living arrangements. It's distinct from a continuing disability review, which assesses medical eligibility.
Dana ****************
If you're on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you can generally continue to receive your benefits while living abroad, including in Thailand, as long as you meet all the eligibility rules and report your move to the Social Security Administration (SSA).

However, if you're receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you cannot receive SSI payments while living outside the U.S. for more than 30 days, even in a country like Thailand.

Summary:

SSDI (based on work credits): Yes, you can still receive it in Thailand.

SSI (needs-based): No, you lose eligibility after 30 days outside the U.S. (chatgpt)

Yes, U.S. citizens can receive Social Security benefits while living outside the United States, but there are some exceptions and considerations to be aware of. Generally, there's no time limit on how long you can live outside the U.S. and still receive Social Security retirement, disability, or survivor benefits. However, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments stop after 30 consecutive days outside the U.S. and won't restart until you've been back in the country for at least 30 consecutive days.

What is Ssa benefits? What country are you in? Explain a little more
Kerry *********
Definitely you can continue to collect Social Security. As for the disability payments, that depends upon their source. If it's SSI, that's a program for low income residents and is funded by general tax revenue rather than by Social Security contributions. Once you're not resident of any state, you can't collect that anymore. If it's SSDI, that's funded by Social Security contributions and eligibility for that is based upon your work history. In that case, if you move abroad similar rules apply as for Social Security.

Depends if it's SSI or SSDI.

In essence:

SSDI

is an "earned" benefit for workers who have contributed to the Social Security system.

SSI

is a "needs-based" program that provides assistance to those with limited income and resources, regardless of their work history.

SSI is a needs-based program that requires recipients to reside in the U.S. to ensure they are meeting the needs of vulnerable populations, according to the Social Security Administration.

U.S. citizens generally continue to receive SSDI benefits while residing abroad, as long as they meet all program requirements.

I’d suspect that it’s a disability allowance paid by taxpayers to help you have a more comfortable like in your home country

I don’t think many people would be happy to be paying for your fancy long term holiday in Thailand…

You’ll have to live off your pension like most retirees here 😩🤣

SSDI you're fine. You can lose your Medicare Medicaid if you're not careful. If I had SSDI I would complete my regular doctor visits online with zoom and then once a year fly home for in person tests and physical. Do that and you're good. SSDI is insurance and if you get injured, sick or otherwise can no longer work then it's your money if they approve you. Doesn't matter what others think. If I could get SSDI I'd tell anyone who ever said stupid stuff like that they could suck on my hot dog!
