TLDR : Answer Summary
An American receiving $3,100 per month in Social Security may apply for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), but they must meet specific financial requirements, such as having at least 500,000 baht in their bank account. The DTV does not have minimum income requirements but does require proof of funds. While applicants can use their Social Security income, they are likely to apply under the Soft Power track associated with education or medical treatment rather than through a work-related category. It's also noted that the DTV visa does not guarantee entry into Thailand, as the individual must be allowed entry upon arrival.

Sure, if you have any personal bank account balance of at least 500k Baht ( USD $16k if applying at Thai Embassy/Consulates in USA), then you meet one of the main requirements for a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

a DTV Visa does not have any minimum income requirements, but minimum financial requirements (proof of funds)

Since, you are receiving monthly American federal Social Security RSDI benefits, it is most likely you would not apply via the Workcation/Remote Worker/Digital Nomad track ( i could be wrong.... ), but via the Thai Soft Power track of a DTV Visa....

Sorry, no.

Well for starters do you have the required 500k baht in an account? I recently saw someone get approved for treatment through zen clinic I think it was in Pattaya. You could apply for the DTV under that if you have the required money to show.

Yes I have well over that.

Anonymous participant if Muay Thai isn’t an option for you check out the medical treatment option. Do a search in the group and you’ll find some info. I know at least one person had a post going about it.

It’s one of those situations where it’s not going to be easy, while soft power will work, no one currently knows why will happen on entry or extension after the course etc has finished.

There are some reports on people being asked for paperwork from immigration to confirm still employed etc on reentry and this may well apply for soft power as well.

My advice right now is wait a little bit and see how this pans out over the next couple of months if people get rejected on entry.

The visa itself does NOT give you the right to enter Thailand. It just gives you the right to stay if allowed in.

@Kevin *******
where was anyone quizzed on re entry. Please share any posts where this has actually happened
Kevin ********
@Ray ****
doesn’t specify soft power but imagine it will be required the same as proof employment.

For the employment side of things as you should have a contract of employment that would be the same paper. But again that is open to interpretation. Haha
Kevin ********
@Ray ****
well you are ok to believe what you like, but we will definitely start to see issues with soft power applications once courses are over and re entries become the norm. As the purpose of the visa is no longer the same once the purpose of the application is over. And it definitely hasn’t been made clear what will happen.

He is the Black Knight in The Holy Grail ie in denial. "Prove it has happened". "Here are recent examples" "They've do not count. I have an anecdote".

@Ray ****
Just yesterday. Bloke not only quizzed but stopped from entering at Poipet. Had to go back to Siem Reap and bool a flight. A few days ago there was another got questioned at BKK with a complex immigration history of back to back border runs and Ed vida. Search the group.
Ray *****
@Greg *******
it's Poipet it doesn't count. I have had a non O retirement for a number of years and was refused at Poipet a few years back and had to fly in from Siem Reap. It cannot be used as an example and no one should ever arrive at that entry point
Greg ********
@Ray ****
Of course Poipet counts FFS Stop being so obtuse. Talk to agents who are reporting that a lot of clients being questioned. PS: Poipet does count unless 55555555555

they tried to bribe him at Poipet for 10,000 Baht. It is known as the worst entry point in Thailand even if you have a visa. But yes according to you it counts. Funny how these bribes and refusal of entry are not happening anywhere else. I am not being obtuse at all , just getting the facts from each situation.

You are a group expert allegedly and you believe that the Thai border at Aranyaprathet is an appropriate point for anyone to cross?
Greg ********
@Ray ****
They tried to bribe "him" FFS you jocks struggle with English. You asked for examples and they were given. Agents will tell you the same but they are not posting about it for very obvious reasons and anecdotes are not data.
Kevin ********
@Greg *******
yeah it’s like, immigration charge 1900 when people bounce, why pay more to bounce? there will of course be suspicion from immigration, and they have every right to question a “visitor” to there country, it’s there job after all.

And if you are on a soft power and they ask for the course you are currently on and it has finished then the visa itself while still valid can be refused.

There are many people that simply don’t understand how stuff works here. Including the simple PRINT the visa. Haha
Greg ********
@Kevin *******
Exactly. The MFA website clearly states the Immigration Officer has discretion over entry. The Visa does not guarantee entry The Head of Consular MFA in his FCCT interview said exactly the same. He also said something along the ones of Immigrstion are still working on their rules. People should consult this type of source and not some bloke in a bar or even this type of group. The fact is nobody can predict the future or any changes to DTV. It is a great visa and is proving a success if the numbers posted are correct. Will they limit numbers in the future? Will they make barrier to entry harder? The fact is nobody knows and "This is Thailand". They just made LTR easier as that has not been a success.

@Greg *******
my point from the start, is that the visa would always need to meet the criteria in which it was granted. And if you no longer meet that criteria then you would probably only get a 60 day exemption as a stamp, and at that point you essentially have a problem as you would need to show more papers next time you enter.

It’s going to be something that will cause some people issues. Especially as people are signing year long leases etc.

@Kevin *******
Look at that extension report post just out up. The Immigration Order is posted too. The residence requirements are tough ie landlords blue book.
Kevin ********
@Ray ****
do a search, it’s happened a few times
Ray *****
@Kevin *******
so on re entry they were asked for their financials and proof of what they are working on or their soft power reasons?

Have to say I have never seen a post where someone has shared that on re entry

If it has happened a few times I can't find it by searching.

All I can see is people posting they just came back with zero questions or issues.
Kevin ********
@Ray ****
it will of course depend on the immigration officer, but you can be sure the future will throw up more than a few cases of rejection and no entry to the country.

There is NO clear way for immigration to deal with this, and if you meet one having a bad day you are at there mercy.

Even with a DTV you don’t have the right to enter and they can ask you anything they like and reject for any reason. And this particular visa will definitely have some issues on extensions and reentry and you will hear more and more about it.

For context over 1000 people a week are turned away just at the 2 international airports in Bangkok. For variety of different reasons.
Ray *****
@Kevin *******
the one at the border with Cambodia doesn't count. I read that one and they actually tried to scam him. Anyone with any visa can have issues at that border. It's known to be the worst entry point in Thailand

The guy at BKK had particular issues that 99.99% of DTV holders would not have

So as I said there does not appear to be issues with anyone using the visa normally and arriving normally, the wild west of Poipet doesn't count and should only ever be used to leave and not enter
Ray *****
@Kevin *******
that's the same for any visa. Currently you appear to be scaremongering with no examples of this actually happening.

We can either be positive or negative regarding the future of this visa. Personally I am posyas it would appear they want much more people in country spending money boosting the economy.

Personally don't see any tightening up and even less issues at immigration as people arrive in country and those are the daily examples of what I am seeing

Anonymous participant ah okay, so SS for disability then.

You can apply under the Soft Power option for the DTV but as the other commenter said, you’ll need a bank statement showing you have 500K baht ($15K USD)
David ********
Chris *******
No, you need 500k baht in the bank and apply for a soft power like:

Muay thai

Cooking classes

Medical treatment.

Social security is not remote work.

@Chris ******
Sorry for my ignorance. What is a soft power?
Chris *******
Anonymous participant this is the category type of the DTV that you may qualify for.

The other category of a "workation" or remote worker, digital nomad, freelancers.

This is not a Retirement visa.
