Why is the visa extension process in Thailand perceived as more difficult now compared to pre-COVID times?

After spending thousands of dollars going through ASQ and submitting reams of documentation, the process to extend a visa while in the country is now more difficult (compared to pre-COVID). Can someone explain this logic?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The community member expresses frustration over the perceived complications in extending a visa in Thailand post-COVID. However, responses highlight that the basic process has not changed significantly, with the addition of a 60-day Covid extension possibly making it easier for some. Concerns about system issues related to TM30 filings are raised, but overall the sentiment suggests that, depending on individual circumstances, extensions can remain straightforward.

It isn't more difficult at all. In some cases, it's much easier (especially if you're getting a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19)

Is there a question or something you need help with?

thanks for trying to help:) My wife and I showed up today....assuming it would be the standard renewal process. Instead, they said proof of residence is now required (signed form from condo/homeowner). They also gave us numerous other COVID-related forms. This is after we have already been through ASQ (and submitted all of that documentation). I thought they were trying to keep what expats/tourists they have left. That has certainly not been my experience with immigration over the past year.

What extension of stay are you getting?

I came over on a non-O visa....just trying to get a 60-day extension. This process is so cumbersome, that we will not do this again. We'll just head home after this 60-day renewal....

I'm assuming you're getting a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 (HIGHLY recommend over the 60 day extension of stay based on visiting Thai Family).

Different immigration offices have different requirements, but all require the following:

1. Your passport and:

a. a copy of your data ("picture") page

b. a copy of your most recent visa (if you have one)

c. a copy of your most recent stamp

d. a copy of your departure card

2. A TM30, filed in the immigration office.

3. The forms (each immigration office may have different forms)

4. A letter from your embassy saying you can not return, OR a print out from your embassy saying they don’t issue the letters.

5. 2x passport pictures

6. 1,900 THB.

Different immigration offices have different policies. *SOME* may require:

- The ID card of the property owner where you are staying

- Copies of *ALL* stamped pages in your passport

Which immigration office are you using?

thanks for sending that over. We are at Chaengwattana. In 2019, to extend for 60 days, we only needed item #1 that you posted above (plus the 1900 baht fee).

Were you married back in 2019? I'd be surprised they would let you get a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism if you entered on a Non-O visa based on marriage.

we were married in 2015...and the extension has changed frequently. At first it was only seven days, then 30.....then 60. We haven't done the marriage visa, because we only stay here for a few months at a time.

@Frank ******
>At first it was only seven days,

That would be an extension of stay denied stamp. Those are given if you don't qualify for any other extensions.

> then 30

If you entered on a tourist visa, and you asked for a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism, that's what they issue you.

>then 60

That is the extension of stay based on visiting Thai family, OR extension of stay due to unable to travel due to COVID-19.

>We are at Chaengwattana

You'd be using Counter K to extend this visa. You wouldn't go to Chaengwattana; you'd use MTT. See attached.

@Benj****
The O/P stated they entered the country on a Non-O visa and that IS at Chaengwattana not MTT :O and they'd use C/W for a covid, a 60 day visit family or a year extension.

I believe there systems were down to check online you have a tm30 filed, not sure if that’s still the case, it’s nothing to do with covid times

proof of residence now required for non-O visa....and multiple other COVID forms must be completed. The paperwork has doubled for visa renewal.

The process to extend a visa (get an extension of stay) in country hasn’t changed since Covid - with the exception of now being able to apply for a 60 day Covid extension.

I wish it was the same. You now have to provide proof of residence (from your condo or homeowner). This was not stipulated on their website, nor was it required before (I have done many visa extensions before). I'm currently sitting in immigration while my wife tries to procure all of this additional documentation.

@Frank ******
the requirement to provide proof of filing a Tm30 has been the case for some time in many offices. Certainly prior to Covid in many.
