this would be under the "everything else"....not sure if I will be able to express this clearly... still... I am trying to understand the practice of some thai folks that have no qualms about taking ... what I consider to be... advantage of tourists ... I wonder if I would do the same... considering the income differences.. and the travel to my country to enjoy the inexpensive labor and prices.. I think of the word... exploiting... and not sure if this is correct... please to help me to come to terms with this... I am not going to get into specifics.. thank you..

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the behavior of some Thai vendors who may exploit tourists due to the significant income disparity. Several commenters share their personal experiences, noting that while some tourists may feel overcharged, this practice is common in many countries where economic conditions differ. They emphasize the importance of understanding local customs, using negotiation skills, and being aware of situations to avoid being taken advantage of. Some also suggest that being educated about the local market prices and adopting a local lifestyle can mitigate experiences of being overcharged.

I have to lock my fridge or it is empty after Thai friends visit.
Andy **********
When I was a tourist, I didn't bother if they changed slightly more, but what I do find annoying, is when you are no longer a tourist, and i know the value of things, but they just overcharge me because they think I'm rich, or think I'm a tourist.

I have never minded the fact I get charged a little more than a local when I am traveling. If I earnt the same as an average local then I wouldn't really be able to afford to travel to another place, aslong as it's only 20% more +/- then I just see it as a tourist tax.
Brian ********
Basic economics. Most Thais are living hand to mouth. If they can get a few more baht they will, and a few baht doesn't hurt most tourists and it greatly helps the vendor. And it happens to tourists in every single country.

I’ve never heard such naive comments. You better return home and never leave your house again

Very justifiable thing to be concerned about. I’m moving there and I’m certainly gonna plan on having help from a local in any negotiations. For one thing, I’ve heard that if you were in a vehicle accident, you will be blamed and you will pay.
Andy **********
@Anita *******
get yourself a dash cam, nobody can deny what is playing on a video in front of them, you say you will get a local Thai to help with negotiations, just be aware some will add money for themselves during the negotiations, (a sort of undeclared commission) if someone has helped you, okay they deserve something in return, maybe a bit of money or a few beers, but in a land or house purchase they could add thousands on, being the middle man/woman and you wouldn't even know, many farangs think something is cheap, just because it's cheaper than there home country, when in fact it could be much more than the going rate.
Ryan ****
i think firstlynot only thais but normal people have a hard time understanding the way you talk in pieces.

Your thinking is way too deep,you probably listen to too many podcasts/social media and conspiracy theories ,your giving yourself unnecessary headaches ,"life is short",so keep it simple. It's an interesting world and humans are just animals that occur all the complications of survival,so travel to enjoy ,not to complicate ,there is good and bad in every country and every person ,I've travelled the world and the Thais posses probably the best happiness and completeness of any of the cultures ,it doesn't make them perfect,as there's no such thing ,but there's no need to come here looking for problems ,when there's so many positive things here 🙏🏽🇹🇭

Until they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Then they are the only person in the entire world. FFS. Want to stop in the road? Sure. Turn left turn right? Any time anywhere…. Never a thought for anyone but themselves

many countries are like that ,I lived in Cambodia for 14 yrs and it's way worse and then in Indonesia for 3 yrs and drove all over the islands and they are awful and the roads terrible ,I find Thai Roads very well organised ,as good if not better than many European roads,but yes the bad drives ,and that's not all,are very bad but still better than so many other countries ,but at least the road system here is very good 🍻
Eric **********
@Jason *****
Of course when you come across a Thai driver who follows the rules and is polite it makes up for the rest! I want to stop and give them an award!!

As with many scams..it all comes down to money. They pray on many who are unprepared or are ill-informed or trying to get a great deal for a cheap price. Buyer beware.
James *********
Bargaining, mercantile savvy, barter, bigger and better deal. . .for some shop keepers, it's how the deal is made that keeps them in business and not the money.
Erik ******
I think tuk-tuk drivers are contractually obligated to overcharge foreigners, or take them to places that overcharge foreigners, or both.

Just have a major accident and see how the insurance companies treat you and the leach personal injury lawyers in the United Stated. I am sure it is in every country. The insurance ceo makes mega millions by denying and prolonging your case. Nothing compared to paying an extra dollar to visit a national park in Thailand.

I understand what you are saying. I just don't go back honestly. Your Thai friend buys a drink and it's 60 baht you buy the same drink and it is 180 baht, I will not argue, I just know me and my friend will not go back to that place. I will only go to places where me and Thai pay same price. Usually places where the price is already written down. I think I'm pretty good with knowing general prices. If the price is out of line , I go elsewhere, no problem. When you go to a National Park, I can understand why Thai citizen would pay less than foreign, Thai citizen pays taxes. I talk with my Thai friends and ask what something should cost. I already know I will never ever get their Taxi price. 🤣🤣.
Jeff *******
@David *****
Bills being padded is a country wide problem, they don't give a shit if you're foreign, thai or an alien. If they think you're stupid or drunk, theres a good chance your bill will be padded. Always ALWAYS check your bar bill. In BKK Koreans get absolutely rinsed so don't take it personally
Anita ********
@David *****
do you ever try to negotiate down on the Taxi?
David ******
@Anita *******
I will also say this, to the people that treat me fair, I'm a loyal repeat every day customer. 🤷🏿‍♂️
David ******
@Anita *******
that is a contentious matter, I now ride a motobike or drive myself. I get frustrated with the 300 baht quote for 8 min drive, my friend can drive for 40 minutes and it's 100 baht. I don't bother with the meter argument in Bangkok anymore. I just ask meter or no meter. They say no meter, no problem I'll catch BTS. I don't argue, I just find something that works for me.
Anita ********
@David *****
yeah I have not arrived yet, but I’m thinking they know you’re not Thai so if you’re by yourself, then they’re probably not gonna wanna go down in their price. That’s a good idea to decline the ride if they’re not gonna turn on the meter. I’m actually thinking when I first get there, I am not going to buy a motorbike. I’ve heard about how many accidents there are so I’ll give myself some time. Also if there is an accident, it seems that the foreigners get blamed and also are the ones that have to pay. Thanks for relating your experience.
David ******
@Anita *******
ah , ok, you have not been. No, please no motobike! I do have motor cycle license and have taken training. Even then it's still crazy riding. I like a motobike just in town, because it's easy to park and move through traffic. I'll drive the car to play golf. As far as the taxi ask around what the fare should be. For example going from BKK to Sukamvit with meter is around 260 baht + luggage+ tolls. Or driver might say 400 to 500 baht flat. That's not bad. Figure $12.to $15 for a half hour ride through tolls at 1 am, I would not argue. We had a work colleague that was stabbed to death over like 50 baht, as he tried to escape without paying his fare.

Use common sense and you won’t get scammed.
Aaron *******
In any place in the World, if you allow yourself to be taken advantage of, someone will do it. If you place yourself in situations where you can be exploited, someone will exploit you. What I see in Thailand, many tourists drunkenly or foolishly put themselves in vulnerable situations, then they are surprised, when something happens.

If you check into it carefully you'll find it has nothing to do with "income differences". There are very powerful people behind most scams in LOS. It's also a part of the culture for many. People pay upwards for 'protection' to get away with it at every level. It's worse in LOS than in many places as the system is feudalistic in many ways still, whereas in the West we have cut down corruption mostly to official rip-offs such as tax & big time insider trading etc!

What are you needing to cone to terms with, every humans these days exploit in some way unless you seclude into caves and jungles. There is always that hope of fulfilling their ego centric self, exception, the ones that already reach high maturity and accept what their lives is to be, in which case, they attained and resolve into modesty and humbleness. You will need to find this lot of individuals. You just need to select whom you wish to transact with.

"I wonder if I would do the same" - Only you know you. But I suspect you already do... You own western goods? Cross Trainers? Microwaves? That comes to you by way of cheap labor. That's right some poor schmuck gets paid $10 dollars a day, lives in a dirt-floor hut, can't medicate his sick children so you could have a cheaper microwave. The difference between this scenario and the tourist scenario is only how close it is to you personally.

I often read Farang complain about the two-price system here. They complain that it's "unfair"... But considering income potential of the Farang, life is unfair. It's only the losers who complain about it.

Phuket taxis are the worse scam in Thailand. Totally aimed at tourists!

Those taxi drivers have a mafia approach to it!

What makes them better than any other taxi driver in Thailand! Just a bunch of scumbags who have paid off the regulating Department!
Dave **********
To know if you were charged a higher price then a Thai you would have to know how much a Thai accultly paid for the same service or item.

Been back 23 years, and married a Thai 50 years, I find it slightly cheaper for the wife to deal with day to day expenses.
Declan **********
@Dave *********
I understand that, however I always ask for the Thai menu and can speak, read and write thai so maybe that's why I haven't encountered it. When it comes to haggling for something, my partner is much better but outside of haggling I've never encountered an issue, nor charged extra. Like I said, I'm aware it happens but it's not as widespread as it's made out to be.
Dave **********
@Declan *********
when my wife and I returned for a visit in 1981 I was getting better taxi prices, no meters at that time, as she had picked up a accent. That was funny to me but not her. I do miss the old days when you

haggled for almost everything it was a fun era to shop and meet the locals.

living here 10 years, they can take advantage of you, as in some other countries. But it’s not exclusively for Thailand. It happens to me once in the beginning, you will learn, and I am happy to say it’s a minority , most are friendly, helpful and very nice. Otherwise I wouldn’t live or stay here.

these remarks show an absolute disconnect from thai way of life and how much they pay to live. Never been scammed because he thinks what he is being charged is reasonable - given that everything is relative. Its def reasonable to charge him farang price.

Taxi driver tried to charge me 1000tb to go 8km the other day would have been 100in a bolt. ( which is more than thai folk are willing to pay) i live amongst thais, no falang alt culture here.

Rest assured, Moslem specially south side of the Mediterranean are the worst.

I’ve been to lots of places, but nowhere else did I experience that behaviour.

Arriving, walking out of the terminal, someone grabs the suitcase and rushes to the bus waiting 50m away. When I’m there too, he asked for 10 USD!!

When walking the market, some guys jump out of a shop, grab us and pull us into the shop!!

When checking in, I lift the suitcase onto the weight station. Behind it leans a man (not the lady checking me in) holding his open hand to me. I look wondering what he wants. He shows the money sign and says 10. I show him the local money and he shakes his head and says “dollaaa”!!!
