Is it possible to change your "home branch" with a Thai bank? I opened an account with Bangkok Bank in Chiang Mai but never travel to Chiang Mai anymore. I can't do anything at other branches. They always tell me I have to go to the Chiang Mai branch. Can't update my passport # (Got a new passport after opening my account). Can't reset my online banking credentials, etc.

I'd like to change to a Bangkok branch.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, changing your 'home branch' with Bangkok Bank can be problematic as many branches require you to visit the original branch where you opened your account. However, options include opening a new account in Bangkok and transferring funds from the old account, or contacting customer service for potential assistance. Experiences vary, and some users have successfully transferred their accounts between branches, while others were asked to open a new account.

Different question but related. If you change bank accounts and transfer your money, could you get in trouble with immigration for your yearly Non-O extension where you need to submit your yearly transactions to show you never got below the required amount (400,000 - 800,000 baht)?

If the transfer doesn't go through immediately there could be a one day (or more) gap where you have no funds in either account.

debatable one. In theory it should be possible. However you are best to check with your immigration office to see if they will allow.

New one is easier))

Yeah, I did it the other way around. Switching away from Bangkok. I had to front up at my new branch and open an account there as step #1.

Same problem. Same bank. Same answer. have to open a new account at new branch. So dumb.

Possible. Just done it with SCB. They just changed my pass book and card

@Darren ********
do you have the same account number?

Go to the main branch on SiLom road in Bangkok. Go to the second floor, and into the first door on the right. That is the section that helps foreigners. They should be able to help. Bring your old, and new passport, and your bank book.

@Jonathan *******
that is true, but for what the OP wants documents have to be signed.

Some banks / branches will allow you to transfer your account whilst others will tell you it’s not possible. I previously transferred a Kasikorn account to a branch in Bangkok from Pattaya with no problems.

Might be best it you contact you bank’s customer services who will advise you properly.

I tried to transfer my Kasikorn branch from Pattaya Tai to where I am up country and was told I couldn't. Seems like it's up to the branch or the staff dealing with you. I can however get a new ATM card and new book when required and a statement verified.

That’s why I suggested contacting the customer services first & note the name of the person you speak to, then if a branch tells you something different you can refer them to that person in customer services. The staff in any branch will usually back down before having to confront anyone else.

Just open a new Bangkok Bank account in Bangkok. You can have two branch accounts on one mobile/online banking account.

I just opened a new account in the city where I moved and transferred the money into it.

No idea on the process of changing a home branch. But just open up another. Transfer funds from your old one and it will auto close after a set time of no transactions ( probably a year).

Stuart Cumming, sad and frustrating.

Well, it is what it is, just emphatizing.

the local banking system in general.

ah ok. Unfortunately that’s the case for many. Way more advanced in some situations but stuck in the dark ages for others.
