TLDR : Answer Summary
A user reported difficulty in opening a new account with K Bank in Maha Sarakham, being told to visit branches in Bangkok or Chonburi instead. Commenters suggest trying different branches or banks, as the banking system can be inconsistent in Thailand. They emphasize the importance of establishing official residency, potentially using property ownership documentation to aid account opening. Additionally, it's noted that each bank branch operates independently, complicating banking processes.

Try Buriram. I haven’t had any problem here.

There’s a big one in Robinson and on Tani road.

Just remember, each bank branch operates independently. This means - if you need proof of funds in your account, you cannot get help at another branch of the same bank. It’s the craziest thing I ever heard of, but this is the way it is.

For trouble free banking go to Krungthai bank.

My Thai wife, BKK Bank Account, got her ATM card swallowed (2019) by the ATM machine. Bang Na, Bangkok.

The branch staff told her, she has to go to the original branch where the account was created (year 2000). Rama 4, Khlong Thoey, Shopping Mall to retrieve it. She had to go there (still, it is Bangkok, no intercity travel).

I got my proof for the EOS at a different branch almost every year. One time even in a tiny office within the local university.

If you own your property, with the Tabian Ban Blue Book, with Yellow Tabian Ban one, it'll be easier to open your savings account. They want to ensure your official residence in Thailand.

you have to pay fees to use another branch, but they'll be happy to take your money. Only your branch will not charge fees. Like 10%, too

I don't have to pay fees though, some people may do obviously. Why don't you just change branch if that's your issue, or open another account? It's not really an issue.

that’s not true. I opened my Krungsri account in Nonthaburi in 2018. I moved to Korat in 2020. I do all my banking and have handled numerous problems at the Krungsri branch at The Mall. They’ve never once told me to go to Nonthaburi to handle any of it.

this is not my experience, a local branch offer a statement that type of thing, but once you ask for a new passbook or account changes no way, I closed my accounts in Bangkok and opened them in my hometown when I stopped working .

Then your're lucky because most banks in Thailands 77 provinces will tell you to go to your branch, especially if we're talking about different provinces/regions.

no they do not. I have all mine opened in Bangkok with nearly all major banks. I do my banking in Chon buri now days, never got told off.

Might have something to do on how you open the account, holding a WP or not etc as such is marked in their systems.

I don't know how long you been in Thailand, but many banks don't want anything to do with accounts opened in another region.

I opened my first account 1991. I've been staying in three provinces with accounts in all three. Now I'm living in Jomtien since many years.I think I know a bit about banks in Thailand.

What you explained has never happened to me or anyone around me, and as I mentioned, I have accounts with almost all of the major banks… KTB, Krungsri, K-Bank, UOB, GSB, BBL, SCB… and even credit cards with three of them. Not once have I ever been redirected to my main branches on these accounts.

Most likely they're just lazy and don't want to deal with it. So they try to push you off on someone else.
