ORIGINAL POSTER
Will be moving to Hua Hin around January. I will be applying for a retirement visa and am from the USA.

I will be leaving in a week for the USA and have been advised to open an account with Bangkok Bank to deposit the 800000 baht for the retirement visa.

Can anyone tell me what I need here in Hua Hin? Which branch and should I wait until I return in January or try now?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to move to Hua Hin and apply for a retirement visa, needing to deposit 800,000 baht in Bangkok Bank. Comments advise that opening the account should be done as soon as possible, mentioning that the process can be challenging. Specific branch recommendations include the Boontavorn branch and one next to Market Village. Necessary documents include a resident certificate, an alternate ID like a US driver's license, a passport, and a letter from immigration, with suggestions to bring a Thai-speaking friend for assistance.

In my experience opening the bank account was the most challenging part of the visa process, so I would do this as soon as possible.

I tried at all the banks in Bluport first, but ultimately managed to get the Boontavorn Bangkok Bank branch to open one.

They sometimes insist on you buying an accident insurance policy from them as a bit of a "sweetener".

More recently I have read people stating the only way to do it now is to use an agent and that costs about 3 to 4,000 Baht.

When you go, dress smartly, be patient and polite and explain that you want to deposit money for retirement.

You need to get a letter from immigration first. Take all of your documents with you. If possible take a Thai speaking friend with you to assist.

Good luck.
