Does anyone know why the Thai visa is so expensive in NZ - around 6x more than other countries?

60 day visa $300 NZD

90 day non-o is $800 NZD

Australia, USA, UK, Europe is around $80-150 for the same visas.

It’s making us rethink which countries we will spend time in during retirement. I just don’t get why NZ is so expensive for essentially the same paperwork.
Answer summary
Many expats and travelers are expressing concern over the significantly higher costs associated with obtaining Thai visas in New Zealand compared to other countries. For instance, a 60-day Thai visa costs approximately $300 NZD, while a 90-day NON-O visa amounts to about $800 NZD, which is substantially higher than the $80-$150 range seen in countries like Australia, the USA, and various European nations. Commenters discuss potential alternatives, such as applying for the visa from neighboring countries like Australia or Vietnam, where costs are much lower. There's also mention of the variability in pricing set by different consulates and the frustration over what many perceive as exorbitant fees lacking reasonable justification.

You can apply for a 60 day visa on the Thai e-Visa Portal for $180 then extend it once in Thailand for another 30 days giving you 90 days

Yes, especially nowadays that all Thai Embassies and Thai Consulates around the world all use the same Thai eVisa Website and issue Thai E–Visa PDF Files

The most egregious examples are the Thai Tourist E–Visa's, both Single Entry Tourist E–Visa (SETV) and Multiple Entry Tourist E–Visa (METV) Fees at the Thai Embassy in Wellington, which, honestly, have no rational basis to Thai legal documents (Gazetted in the Thai Royal Gazette), regardless of actual costs on the ground at the Thai Embassy in Wellington

Also, for the remainder of this year ( 5 July 2026 to 31 December 2026 ), the Thai Embassy in Wellington is offering a "Discount" on their Thai E–Visa Fees, which only underscore the immediate need for the Thai Embassy in Wellington to permanently revise all of their Thai E–Visa Fees to be in line with the rest of the world and all the other Thai Embassies and Thai Consulates around the world

Also, payment for Thai E–Visa Fees for the Thai Embassy in Wellington is also done via the Thai eVisa Website, so another inexplicable reason why their prices are so different from all the other Thai Embassies and Thai Consulates around the world

OP
Dca Dca thank you for this. Such a generous discount haha. I’m glad others find it egregious too - I just can’t get my head around it. Double the costs would be crazy but 5-6 x is actually disgusting

High rent, the Embassy in Wellington is about as big as the US. On the flipside, a Thai can get a 1 year METV to NZ for $450.

Crazy price in NZ. Why not plan a vacation in Vietnam (or one of the other neighbouring countries), get your non-O there and then get a cheap flight to Thailand.

Lynnette Munoz I thought you had to be a citizen of the country you apply from? Do you know of any countries that would issue these to NZers? We wanted 90 days but $1600 between us is a lot for this, in our opinion.

ScenicTulip7623 no, that's DTV. You can apply for non-O in various other countries if you can prove you are there using entry proof/accomodation etc.

Lynnette Munoz the 90 day non-o is $1600 - $800 each if applying from NZ. I will investigate other countries- thanks
