Where do I go to get the marriage license packet (from US, married 30 years to Thai national) translated. I already have the packet Local, State, and Washington DC stamps/notary/ whatever. I am coming to Thailand in July and just need the packet translated and then I have to go to Passport Office (at Central Chiang Mai Airport Mall) for legalization. I just need to know where to go to get it translated.
Answer summary
A user is seeking information on where to get their marriage license packet translated in Thailand for legalization at the Passport Office in Chiang Mai. They already have the necessary stamps and notary on their documents. The comments provide various suggestions including using translation services available near legalization offices, such as Sawadee Translations in Bangkok and others around the US Embassy. It is important to reserve legalization service in advance and ensure to meet requirements with the Amphur office, including bringing witnesses.

My wife and I are both American citizens. I have a Non O-A visa. She has her 2nd Non O 90 day visa from the Vientiane Thai Embassy because her application for the one year extension was rejected. Apparently the photocopy of our Colorado marriage license was fine for the e-visa system, but not for the extension application. We cannot find our original marriage license, we somehow lost it during our relocation. Because we don’t have the original, we have to go down the path you described: obtain a certified copy from the county clerk, have it authenticated by the CO Secretary of State, the State Department, and the Thai Consulate in LA. We have the first two steps done. We plan to use Sawadee Translations here in Bangkok to translate the authenticated license and obtain the legalization stamp from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then we go to Immigration and apply again for the one year extension of my wife’s Non O visa. Moral of the story: don’t lose your original marriage license, keep it handy at all times.

Nick Lim Even original certificate no use for Thai Amphur & immigration. They want the long form version of marriage certificate. The one you had was the short form of marriage certificate and can only be used in the states.

Have you sent it to the Thai Embassy in the US yet? I am just starting to do ours. From what I understand I send my Santa Cruz County embossed marriage certificate to the California Secretary of State’s office, then to the State Department certification office in Virginia, then the Los Angeles Thai Consulate. Take that with us to Phuket and take it to a certified translator. There are probably some in Los Angeles I would think since there is a large population of Thais there. There is a Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Phuket where we live. They have to certify the translation and document. Then to the Amphur’s office with two Thai witnesses to confirm that you live together and are still married. Then they give you the Kor Ror 22 for immigration and your tax ID that you have to get from the Finance Ministry if you are in Thailand more than 179 days in a calendar year.

Immigration used to take a copy of our marriage certificate until after COVID. This new requirement is a pain in my ass! I may as well get a yellow book and pink card while I’m at the Amphur’s office…. Good luck! The US Consulate in Chang Mai no longer stamps or certifies marriage certificates from what I’ve read. Same thing for income affidavits like I used to be able to use.

Julia Snider Intawiwat Why then do you need it translated if it is verified by the Thai Embassy? This is the process for the UK which includes translations -

1. IN THE UK: Marriage certificate legalised by the FCDO in Milton Keynes (2 documents, copy of original and legalised copy))

2. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO Translated (2 translations from 1., now 4 documents in total)

3. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO AND their translations verified by the Thai Embassy in London (4 verifications from 1. and 2. giving 8 documents in total)

4. IN THAILAND: All the above (i.e. all 4 documents & their translations, making 8 in total) Legalised by MFA in Bangkok

Translation services are everywhere. Usually close by the legalization offices. It will cost around 200-300 ฿ per page. Don't forget to make a reservation for the legalization service and don't pay for the "expedited" service, as it is not a service that can be expedited and will be a waste of ฿400. Don't forget the last step which is the registration at an Amphur. That is the final step to have a fully legal marriage in Thailand and how you obtain your Kor Ror 2 and 3. The queue at most offices is well out into the future (2+ months).

Don Weimer oh my 2 months? My husband will still be there but I am only there in July until I go back in March 2027. Can he go to the appointment by himself (or with his thai mom, auntie, and cousins?

Julia Snider Intawiwat for the Amphur you will both need to be there and you will have to have all the paperwork and two Thai witnesses. Each office has its own queue. No way around you both being there. You may be able to find a friend at one of the offices or with connections and get in sooner. I have a list of all the documents you will need. Feel free to reach out directly

Julia Snider Intawiwat swadee translations can do the thai translation and submit everything to the ministry of foreign affairs for you. It will take 3 to 4 weeks. And he can hold on to them until you return, but you will need to go to the Amphur with him and witnesses. Depending on what district you are going to it could take more than one trip. I recently just completed this process and the asked for my us passport to be translated as well and then said we need to come back in a week. Everything is bureaucratic and mostly in paper form until the last step of entering it into the computer system and printing the khoror 22.
