Will be getting my affirmation to marry in Bangkok soon. To legalise the document can it be done in Chiang Mai or do i need to go to the ministry of foreign affairs in Bangkok? I ask as it's a 3 day waiting time there, would rather come back to CM!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The legalization of your affirmation to marry must be done at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Bangkok. While some expats mention using agencies for assistance, the process should be performed in Bangkok due to the specific requirements, including translations and certifications that some services near embassies may provide. Chiang Mai does not have the same services available, and it's advised to handle all legal documentation directly at the MFA to avoid potential complications.

I lost their business card but the company with address listed above in Thai is first rate, have used them twice (6 years in between) both times excellent service and competitively priced

Less than 2,000 baht, I forgot the exact amount, but something like 1,500 for the translation, filing the paperwork for you and picking it up, then a bit more for mailing it to me in Ubon Ratchathani. If you want to be sure before paying them a visit I'd just give them a call

How much did the whole process cost you?

phone number on the bottom if you want to inquire or get directions ;-)

a little tricky to find not easily visible from the street, upstairs in a smaller building behind a little market!

I wonder if you need any documents from your country to prove that you are not already married there?

Abhirama Das but if you have been married you should have documents to prove that you have divorced

OK, that's what I suspected. Now it's clear.

No that's what the affirmation is for

Literally have just gotten married today, yes you have to get it done in Bangkok, you can use an agency but I did it on my own, BUT! Be careful there was mistakes with my translation! Luckily the lady gave me time at the MOFA to change it and get the fast track service ( which they don't provide anymore if you ask for it when handing in your docs) but luckily their is an translation department downstairs with re-translated my docs......

After that I went to korat and got married ( today ) and it was painless! But the hardest things are the Affirmation and translation then legalisation.

Good luck to you bro, if you need any questions answered give me a shout

the cheapest service i found was on the other side of sukhumvit, over the bridge, take left, then first right up a street next to the manhatan plaza, first translation shop on the right, 1600 or 1900 (i can't remember) for translation and take to MFA, i collected it but they will post it, the others quoted 3000

, said there are a TON of translation services which will translate your affirmation statement (and your passport too) go get the MFA certification stamps and mail the papers to you. I mentioned the passport because some Amphurs want your passport translated into thai and certified by the MFA too.

In the Trendy Building on Sukhumvit Soi 13 there are a LOT of shops that will do the translation, get the stamps and mail it to you

There are plenty of lawyers/agents who will do it for you, a few close to the US embassy. The right price is about 1,500 baht and they'll take the paperwork in for you, pick it up when it's ready and then send it to you in the post
