TLDR : Answer Summary
This discussion centers around the translation of marriage documents into Thai, which is necessary for opening a bank account in Thailand. It is noted that merely having the marriage documents may not be sufficient as banks often require a specific type of visa (e.g., long-term visa) and proof of residency in Thailand. Participants share their experiences regarding the difficulty of opening bank accounts with certain visa types and suggest that translation and legalization of documents should be done in your home country or through the Thai Embassy. Additionally, users discuss experiences with various banks, indicating that requirements can vary by branch.

Thanks everyone. Opened an account at Krungsri bank. They were great and didn’t require the same as SBC. Will still need to translate and “legalize”. Thanks again for all your help!

Recently opened a SCB bank acct with passport(nonO) and a thai driving licence the rest are irrelevant....or maybe each different branch have different rules? Keep searching u will find a branch that allows u to open bank acct

I do not think the marriage license/documents is how you get the bank account. It is how you get the marriage visa.

that’s what we thought, but SBC bank said because we wanted to convert from O to Marriage they needed the translation version! We got an account to move the ball positive direction!

you are correct, how about: “a paradoxical situation where one is trapped by contradictory rules or conditions.” You need a bank account to put 400k into escrow to obtain a marriage license and they were telling me that I need to use my application for a marriage license to open a bank account? Maybe not quite, but close enough. Were you, or are you a university professor?

It's not a catch 22. Do you even know what catch 22 means?

they have stopped giving bank accounts for DTV ones that are already opened have been frozen or closed
Max *************
@Andrew *******
Where have you gotten the info that already opened bank accounts for people on DTV-visas have been frozen or closed? I don't believe that for a second.

several students at my school they are cracking down on accounts, some have some havent. But what I do know is that DTV or Ed visa ( non university ) can not open accounts at the moment.

I really don't care what you belive its my stance people like you are not even here and or just troll.

@Andrew *******
If it's not possible to open a bank account at the moment when on a DTV is not same as banks are closing older accounts. It's not the same thing. FYI, I've been around in Thailand since 1989,in Pattaya/Jomtien since 1994,and I know a helluva lot more about banks and bank accounts then you will ever know. You shouldn't spread false information here on FB.

You have to get them translated and verified in your home country and then take them to the Thai Embassy in your home country.

not true. you can get them translated in Thailand and certified by your embassy in Thailand. I did this with

You need to have your marriage certificate authenticated through a few steps before it can be used in Thailand. First, it must be authenticated by the Secretary of State in the state where you were married. Then, it needs to be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., followed by authentication by the Thai Embassy in the U.S.

After that, have the document translated into Thai and bring it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Bangkok to be legalized for official use in Thailand.

I'm currently going through this process myself. There are third-party service providers that can handle the entire U.S. side for you, and you can likely find visa service providers in Bangkok to assist with the Thai side.

It’s definitely a long and somewhat frustrating process, but unfortunately, it has to be done.

your marriage documents won't cut any ice when trying to open a Thai bank account. What you need is a "longterm"visa (LTR, O/X, O/A) or a Non-Imm-O visaclass. On top of this a "certificate of residency" from your Immigration and a Thai mobile number with a SIM card registered in your name

@Nongnuch *******
not sure about the Thai number registered in ‘your name’. I have Non-O, my own house & 4 bank accounts (3 bangkok & 1 kasikorn)

thank you, should’ve included what we do have. Already have the Visa Non O. Have a certificate of residency and a Thai number. Just landed in Thailand and went to the bank and they requested out marriage documents, that have been substantiated by all USA agencies to be translated into Thai.

did you maybe ask them to open a joint bank account? It is very unusual for a bank to ask you for your marriage documents, when all you want is a bank account in your sole name. On Immigration, the application of a 1-year extension of stay based on being married to a Thai, requires 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account in your sole name. If you wish to use a joint bank account, you need to ask Immigration first, if they allow it. They will probably tell you that in this case you need the double amount of a deposit in it which would be a minimum of 800,000 THB

joint account? Go to the USA embassy

I use this company, I sent my documents online. Went to pick it up in person and went over to the Thai Consular for Legalization. I booked my queue on this link.
