Can someone give me some constructive advice and direction on what to do please. I understand to obtain a marriage visa, you need to have a Thai bank account of 400,000 baht. But the bank does not allow opening of bank account with a tourist visa. So how then can I go about this? Thank you in advance for the right direction. 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a Thai bank account as a foreigner on a tourist visa, which is often required for obtaining a marriage visa, you may face certain challenges. Banks typically have strict requirements, but many have varied policies. Some users suggest visiting different banks, especially those with international offices like Bangkok Bank or Kasikorn Bank. It's crucial to bring necessary documentation, including your passport, proof of residence, and possibly a marriage certificate. Some users found success by going with their Thai spouse or hiring an agent to facilitate the process. Additionally, visiting a local immigration office can provide you with a letter that may help in opening an account.

Getting a bank account

Don’t expect to get something for nothing. Each office is an independent business. Each office makes their own criteria.

You certainly will pay a fee for transferring USD from USA to Thailand. The amount depends on the bank and the transfer service.

Banking is an essential service if you plan to spend time here. It’s not FREE.

I prepared ahead of time by getting a bank account set up 6 months ago.

I treated this as an important business transaction, not just a casual activity.

My Thai friend made an appointment for me at the Bangkok Bank branch across from Astra in CM. He also translated for me.

I am a middle aged physician and dressed as such. Yes I did do the whole business card ceremony.

I told the banker that I plan to retire soon and buy a condominium at Astra.

I was asked to purchase a life insurance policy for about $100. Presumably the banker gets a commission. Whatever, it’s the price of doing business at the bank.

They wanted to copy my passport and see my credit card from Wells Fargo. I think I showed them how much was in my account also to make the point that I’m a serious customer.

I also showed them $500 in perfect $100 bills that was to be the initial deposit.

Nothing else was required.

Act like a serious customer and you will be treated as such.

Present yourself properly and you should be fine.

If not, thank them for their time and visit another office.

Best wishes on your adventure to Thailand!

I contacted you and you would not help me. You did not respond at all to my inquiry about help opening a bank account and said that you don't have any more allotments for retirement visas, which was not my initial inquiry. I asked about opening a bank account. You said I needed to pay for the extension and then I guess hope for the allotment of retirement visas later. 🤣Again, my inquiry was about help opening a bank account.

We do not offer the bank account only service, rather the full service at the moment due to abuse.
Ruth *******
@THAI *****************************
I'm sorry, but I'd say that abuse is asking for a copy of someone's passport when you don't provide the service requested then requiring they pay for an extension they don't need to hope to have the visa they do. The entire interaction did not instill trust

Contact Mots Service in pattaya they did a great job helping me open my account. Very reasonable and held my hand the entire process.

go to immigration office, explain your situation, they'll give you a letter for the bank, open 2 accounts. one for the 400k the other for living.

ps, take your wife / girlfriend with you.

@Paul *********
be sure to bring all proper documentation with you at the time. I went to immigration a couple days ago to ask for guidance. They told me as well that they can provide a letter. I did not have documentation at the time, because I was only going to ask questions.

Get a Thai mobile number. Try another bank and keep trying. Before the day is finished you have a bank account.

I have tried the same , it’s difficult because you do not have documents for a registered perm address or work permit and next to impossible if you do not speak Thai. Some ask you to pay five figure amount for insurance to open the bank account.

I opened an account very recently ( on a 30 day vis extension ) with Bangkok Bank

After visiting several banks ( with Thai girlfriend) and being turned down . .

I visited Thai immigration, who after confirming I was legitimately staying with her at her address . . . Gave me a form ( in Thai ) to take back to the bank, and was able to open the account . . . ( my experience recently in Prachinburi) the bank clerk spoke only a little English and the guy at immigration spoke English fluently and was really helpful .

.

If you visit immigration and the bank,

take photocopies ( several ) of everything . .

Passport including page with your Visa, girlfriends ID, proof of her address etc . . Good luck . . .
Dan ********
@Ned ******
what exactly was the form that immigration gave to you ? So immigration knew you were on a tourist visa ? So you were only in the country a max of 60 days? And what visa are you on now ?
Ned *******
@Dan *******
. . ..sorry, I have no idea . . It was a letter all in Thai . ... immigration officer verified it was sufficient to present to the bank to open an account . . .

Yes they knew, as I had to produce copies of my passport showing my 30 day extension and biometric page

Yep came in 30 days visa free, and obtained the 30 days extension ( same immigration office )

Now on 'Non O' 90 days visa . ...

Get a single entry non-o visa from a consulate or embassy abroad. Even if there are financial requirements, an account in your home country is fine. Then you enter Thailand and open the bank account and transfer the necessary funds.

I'm in Chiang Rai Province so it may differ from your situation but thay asked me for 3 official documents and weren't too specific on what. I had my passport ID page copied, stamped by my embassy, and translated to thai. Had my TM30. Had the marriage certificate. Also had a letter from Thai Bureau of Foreign Affairs that was required for marriage. This was Bangkok Bank.

You should be able to open a bank account yourself, even if you are on a tourist visa or visa exempt stamp. All banks have different requirements. All branches have different requirements. Even within a branch two staff members may give very different answers. Find a branch of the bank you want (I use Bangkok Bank in Doi Saket), in an area with lots of foreigners. Go to the bank with your passport and a friend who holds an account at that branch. Have 100,000 thb to deposit. Should work but many banks/branches will also require a certificate of residence from Immigration. But instead, you could offer a letter from your hotel/ hostel/ Airbnb/ friends house stating that you stay there. Doi Saket Bangkok will work with that.

wow. Don’t they have a protocol to this. Some banks allow and some don’t. Goodness.
Frank **********
@Aaron *****
there is no universal protocol in Thailand. Every bank, every Immigration Office, every drivers license office,, every amphur adds their own little extra rules.
John ********
@Aaron *****
you will find that this applies for the immigration as well
Carsten ************
@Aaron *****
you will find the protocol on Bangkok Bank website. Print it, bring it to the bank and anyway most of them will kick you out. It's a hit n miss.
Ruth *******
@Carsten ***********
do you have a link to this full document?
Carsten ************
Ruth *******
@Carsten ***********
I don’t see this second text in the document at the link.
Carsten ************
@Ruth ******
it's from Bangkok Bank App.
Ruth *******
@Carsten ***********
Is that current? I ask because the bank insisted that the document you previously sent was old (which it is). They insisted the webmasters could not remove old information, lol. As a software engineer, I know that was garbage, but there was only so much this poor woman could do on that front. She then pointed me here and said, "this is the current information."
Carsten ************
@Ruth ******
seems to be pretty old, but it's the current document you find through the App. It leads you to that booklet.
Ruth *******
@Carsten ***********
thanks. I'm going to try talking to a different location tomorrow. I just want to know exactly what Bangkok Bank is putting out there before I do. Thanks for your help.
Carsten ************
@Ruth ******

this is the clause/rule that allows "agents" to open accounts for clients without a problem.

They are someone known to the bank branch.

You pay the agent a fee and usually have to buy insurance, but it gets it done.

Or keep flogging till someone gives in.
Ruth *******
@Carsten ***********
I missed the part about a resident before. I don't think I know anyone well enough that they would be comfortable writing such a letter. I have a "friend" in Hua Hin whom I knew for a couple weeks and we periodically message, but I don't know if I'd even feel comfortable asking. I do have a banker in the States though. I need to find out if he knows how this Swift letter would be written. Thanks for the info.

How about your landlord?
Ruth *******
@Carsten ***********
I’m not signing a lease until I know I can stay…seems a bit putting the cart before the horse. 🤣 I do wonder if anyone at the hotel where I’ve been a regular would do it. I could ask the operations manager with whom I’ve built a friendship of sorts. I’m also stopping at one of the banks that rejected me and will politely ask about this document and what might be necessary.

This is fantastic! Thank you so much. I had two experiences at Bangkok Bank yesterday (and two, maybe three...I've lost track, others previously). One representative desperately wanted to help me but his hands were tied by policy. I have a feeling that if I went to him with this document, he might send it up the chain and help me.

The other was fighting me. I have to admit that I eventually lost my temper. I have been to so many banks and logic simply does not apply, lol. Obviously, that branch is out :-).
Dan ********
@Ruth ******
ask to speak to the branch manager. Tell them you are buying a property and immediately transfer 15.5 million baht. They have the discretion to allow or otherwise. A desk clerk will not dare question rules or protocol, that is the thai way.
Ruth *******
@Dan *******
I did, but this was months ago. I'm all set now, thanks.

hi Jeffrey, what do you mean by keep trying? You meant the banks? So sometimes they allow and sometimes they don’t for anyone using tourist visa. Don’t they have a proper protocol to this issue 😒

protocol is not a thai word

every branch of every bank makes it's own rules. So yes there is a protocol on a branch by branch basis. It can help if your wife is in a position to vouch for you and you go to her brsnch

how did you verify lease of residence on tourist visa? You did TM30 ? Please advise . Appreciate n many thx of your answers
Ruth *******
@Jeffrey ***********
I have tried over twenty already. Due to a change in the regulations in October, even ones that historically have been reliable to open accounts for expats (based upon reports on this and other groups) will not open. I have brought the rules with me. At the last encounter, at a stand-alone bank (which people recommend folks use), an immigration officer overheard the conversation and told the tellers I could not open the account. I was so thrilled that an immigration officer was there and should have known that an account was necessary BEFORE getting a non-O visa. However, she told them I needed a long-term visa in order to open an account. 🤦

I think I may need to resort to an agent.

I should note that I'm in Bangkok.
Aaron ******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Ruth ******
yeah. I know if getting an agent will be easily settled the issue. I’m seeing is there a way to do it ourselves first to avoid the extras. 😅
Ruth *******
@Aaron *****
I'm not even concerned about the extras, although the one agent with whom I spoke wanted to charge 15,000 baht, because they required purchasing insurance. 🤣 🤣 I've seen quotes here and elsewhere more like 5K, so I wasn't doing that. I talked to someone who had paid 25K for the whole visa process. I'd sooner do that, although I'd rather do everything on the up and up. That's my real issue.

I've considered just getting an education visa...a real one, because I want to learn Thai anyway. Then, I can get the bank account and later get a retirement visa. The only problem is that I want to travel and I don't want to be restricted by the visa.

I don't know...maybe I'll just go to Cambodia. Thailand makes things very difficult and I like Cambodia a lot too.
