TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is struggling to open a bank account in Thailand to fulfill the requirement of maintaining 400,000 baht for a marriage visa. Several community members suggest various banks like Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank, and mention that requirements can vary by branch. They recommend visiting banks located in malls for better English-speaking staff and suggest bringing necessary documentation such as a lease agreement or a letter from an immigration office to facilitate the account opening process.

Go to banks inside big malls where they get a lot of foreigners/tourists. They usually have staff that can speak English well there. Sometimes they reject because they don't speak English well enough to explain the rules and regulations.

Ask at your local immigration the list of requirements for the extension of stay, bring that one with you to the bank. Let your gf tell them that the government requires you to have an account

KTB require a letter to confirm residency from Immigration and a letter from the police. Done mine recently. You will only get a savings account.

I had no problem at Bangkok Bank main branch in Silom, or Bangkok Bank Central Bang Na, only requirements were passport copy and money to deposit.

DO NOT recommend an agent please. We have a no agent inside the country policy. The O/P can use Google if they want to find one

I will call a friend now. He recently used the service of an agent in Pattaya who charged 1000 baht to open an account. Very efficient and it was conducted on appointment and done within 45 mins.

Thanx for the requirements to open a bank account in Buriram (y)

I deleted the conversation about the extensions and re-entry permits because it wasn't related to this topic about opening a bank account.

take care

That's the first I've heard of a letter from the police. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya etc doesn't do it

Unfortunately in Bangkok you can't get a residence certificate from the immigration office unless you're on an extension of stay that requires a 90 day report. You can't get them on a tourist visa or a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp

You just have to keep trying banks. There is no rule against opening a bank account on a 30 day visa exempt entry or a 60 day tourist visa entry. You CAN do it.

The rule whether you can or can't is decided by the manager of that branch office only. Keep trying banks and you will find one.

People have said a few locations of K bank will open an account with just your passport and a lease agreement. Other people have success if they take a thai friend who banks at that branch with them.

Good Luck (y)

Tod Daniels After unsuccessful here at Surat Thani ( Khiri Ratnhikom / Khrungthai Bank) I flew last week to BKK and went to Bangkok Bank Rama lV road. At the door a nice lady with low English repeatedly said -can not-need work permit )to my request to open an account. I nicely asked to talk to the manager and I were allowed to go upstairs. Nice english speaking lady, small talk and she agreed to open account, only need passport copy with stamp from German Embassy. I went there ( around the corner, sathorn road) and were back at the Bank 30 mins (!) later. The rest was done quickly and professional. Debit card, savings book, online and SMS service. Only = no Visa only Union pay which I finally accepted after she credible explained BB no longer offer Visa debit cards only CC which I don't want. So I took the card ( without the insurance stuff). All done smoothly. Just to give you latest details on opening bank account for Farangs.

Thai Visa rules are for all the same, only difference is that some countries has other agreements in where to apply and how many days they get on entry without a visa.
