TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a bank account and deposit 400,000 baht before applying for a marriage visa in Thailand, you should first determine your current visa status. Tourist visa holders may face challenges opening an account directly at banks; using an agent or applying for a Non-O visa at a Thai consulate can simplify the process. Visit a standalone bank branch and consult the manager for specific account opening requirements. Although documentation requirements can be overwhelming, it's advisable to seek help from local immigration or utilize services like TVC to navigate the paperwork. Also, having a Thai friend accompany you may assist in overcoming initial barriers.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

Do you have any friends who regular Thai see as higher cast? Such as a policeman or teacher? When I opened my first Bangkok Bank account in early 2004, I was on a 60-day tourist visa. A Thai friend of mine, a pilot with Thai International, came with me, & spoke directly to the bank manager. Perhaps a half hour later, I had my bank book.

Ask your local immigration what they need.

TVC go to them. They will help cut through the paperwork. Spend more time enjoying life than pulling your hair out at the IMO.

What is the actual question? I just did this this year. I forget the seasoning time, but I deposited the money, waited, then did the marriage application. I'm theory I can use the income method after the first year, but even the guy at immigration was like "you should not touch the money because they could change the rules without notice" and what rules are enforced is damn near arbitrary as it is.

he's asking how to open the bank account, not what to do with the money after he has it.

Ok procedure is you go to a standalone bank branch in your area and talk to the manager. Ask for the list of requirements to open an account. Now people have said Bangkok bank are easy too.

There is no straightforward answer. Each bank branch manager sets the requirements for that individual branch. The requirements can be different for 2 branches of the same bank a kilometer apart.

The most important factor is what visa you are on. If you are on a tourist visa or visa exempt, you probably cannot open a bank account. You'll either need to use an agent to get an account, or you'll need to leave Thailand and go to a nearby Thai embassy or consulate and apply for the non-O visa there. Once you have that it may be easier to open an account.

And when married, is it more easy?

not really. It's the visa you're on the makes the biggest difference. A marriage visa is a non-O just like a retirement visa is a non-O. There's a small chance a marriage certificate with a Thai could help, but just bringing your spouse with you would probably be the same and won't make a huge difference.

no, being married in many banks doesn't weight in. Go get an agent, it costs around 5000.- THB to open a bank account with the help of an agent, easy peasy
