TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is moving to Chiang Mai with a tutor's visa and inquired about the appropriate visa for their mother-in-law, who wishes to live with them. Community members clarified that there is no 'tutor visa' per se, and the mother-in-law cannot extend a visa through a family relationship with an in-law. Suggested options included the Non Immigrant O visa for those over 50, as well as other unspecified methods for obtaining a visa based on family or other qualifications. However, the final guidance was to check the relevant Thai Embassy or Consulate for specific requirements.

Just visit the website of the Thai Embassy of Consulate near you and look at all the Non Immigrant VIsa's available. You will see there also the requirements. Without knowing anything of your mother in law and knowing that different Embassies/Consulates has different requirements it is very hard to tell you.

I will not be working there, just taking care of my kid.

Our child is going to study there and I can obtain a visa as her guardian. So, for my in law must be a non immigrant. What are the requirements for that ?

Indeed. So if she applies for retirement visa or whatever the name is, what are the requirements?

ahhh, okay, you are going to get a visa based on being the parent and supporting a child on an ED visa here. (y) That makes more sense. you meet the financial requirements of 500k baht in the bank for 30 days before you apply for a yearly extension.

Your mother in law will have to qualify for a visa some other way.

Even if you had a valid visa (and a work permit) to be a tutor here, you couldn't get your mother in law to "piggy back" an extension on your visa. :/

That only works for immediate family NOT in-laws.

You could get that type for your husband but not your mother in law. She would have to get her own visa with her own qualifications.

There is no tutor visa.

What is in the name. I have no idea what a tutor's visa is. If you mother in law is over 50 years of age she can apply for the Non Immigrant O visa based for being over 50.
