Thinking about the best way to Optimise my upcoming stays in Thailand.

I Have my return leg of a flight booked to go back to Bangkok from Dublin at the end of September. I was on a STV visa from Jan to July, those are being discontinued now and are single entry so weighing up my options.

I plan to go to Australia for a few weeks over the Xmas/NY period.

Can I stay in Thailand for 90 days on a single entry tourist visa which would get me through to the December period that I will be going to Australia?

Would a METV be the best option when returning back to Thailand from Australia? Not sure I would have time for visa processing since it’s over the Xmas period and I will only be staying for two or three weeks.

I’m an Australian and Irish citizen

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering their visa options for Thailand due to upcoming travel to Australia. They want to know if a single entry tourist visa would allow them to stay in Thailand for 90 days before their trip, or if a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) would be a better option for their return from Australia, especially considering the potential delays during the holiday season.

Get a six month METV and that would give you unlimited entries of 60 days during the time the visa is valid for (6 months from the date of issue)

OR

Get a single entry tourist visa which will give you just about 90 days for that first entry and then get another one before you come back again.

Now whether you have time to process that visa is between you and the thai consulate you're dealing with SO you'd have to contact them to find that out

the single entry tourist visa has to be applied for in home country before entering Thailand?

@Chris ******
nope you can go to a thai consulate in most countries and get one by meeting the requirements at that consulate

ok but before entry into Thailand maybe was the better question?

@Chris ******
you BUY tourist visas at thai consulates in other countries before you wing your way to thailand. You cannot get a tourist visa inside the country

Do I need to provide proof of onward flight within a 60 day period for a SETV to be granted?

@Chris ******
sorry had my wires crossed

Ellie gave you the correct answer

@Chris ******
, That is the embassy/consulate-specific requirement. You need to check with the consulate you are applying to.

does a SETV get processed quicker than a METV in your experience or it’s all the same? I’m thinking if it’s the same, get single entry to allow me 90 days for first trip (will likely need around 84 days total) and then get a METV in Oz when I’m there for when I fly back to Thailand in January that will do me for close to 9 months with a couple of border hops?

@Chris ******
totally workable plan, get the sing for the first visit then the METV when you're in Oz. Get ahold of the consulate you'll use there BEFORE you go so you have an idea of what you need and that they know you're going to be applying

as he is not a resident of AU...will the Australia Thai Embassy or Consulate issue the METV to non residents?

@James *******
The consulates in Oz used to be the only place that would issue a 6 month METV to people who weren't citizens of that country 😛

, OP has dual citizenship including oz.

with the METV, if you travel to Thailand close to the time it is issued, do a border run each 60 days then you could potentially be in Thailand on that visa for close to 8 months if you do your last renewal close to the expiry date?
Brandon ************
@Chris ******
close to 9 months because you can extend for 30 days at immigration. But there's no such thing as a visa renewal. You'll be getting brand new entries each time.

after the last 60 day border run extension you can get another 30 days on top of that?
Ellie *******
@Chris ******
, don't mix entry to Thailand with an extension at the local immigration office. Every time you enter Thailand using METV you will get a NEW entry stamp for 60 days. You will get the last but new 60 days stamp on the valid-until-date of METV.

Yes, Entry on Tourist Visa is eligible for 30 days tourism extension.
