Hi I can't really find the info I'm after or if it's possible. I'm looking into spending 2-3 weeks per month in Thailand in the future, I'd fly back to Australia to run my business a week or 2 and spend the rest of my time there. Is there any visa options for this? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the possibility of splitting time between Thailand and Australia, seeking information about visa options for spending roughly 2-3 weeks per month in Thailand. Several commenters suggest various visa types, including tourist visas (30 days on arrival, extendable), a METV (multi-entry tourist visa), and the potential for a retirement visa if over 50. There are discussions about the practicality of entering Thailand multiple times a year without issues, as well as personal anecdotes regarding experiences with visa policies and frequent visits.

I'll probably spend 3 months in a few places to see where I want to buy a condo, I'd need to be within a couple hours of bangkok so I can get to China easy to see my daughters. Pattaya I have a friend who owns a bar so that's where I'll start

, you asked about the amount of cash needed and mentioned a range

That puts you in upper echelon and is enough for a host of people. So yes, you should be more than fine

Example:not my case but foreign teachers earn a fifth of that here or less. At your lower end.

My neighbor works on a rig in the North Sea and he’s in and out every month no problems doing it for years

You are allowed to enter the country 6 times a year by air (and two by ground).

You get 30 days automatically upon entry, and can also get a 30 day extension (60 days total for each visit).

If you're not planning to fly into Thailand more than 6 times per year, then you don't need to get a visa.

This will work for a year or two, but if they 'pull you up' after that as Oliver says, then you will need to look into visa options.

yeah, that's not the actual thai embassy website, and it says that on there too 😉.

@Dallas ****
Not correct. Officially there is no limit flying in
Dallas *****
It is right on the Thai embassy website, 6 entries per year by air and 2 by land
Dallas *****
The limit is six times a year for flying in, i've had this confirmed by immigration
Dan ********
@Dallas ****
nowhere is it written "6 times a year". I've never even heard that, and 95% of members responding will agree.

But most importantly, a single entry, gets a 30 day visa exempt stamp, which can be extended another 30 days. That's two months. Try and do that more than 6 times and you'll discover that the year is over already. And you can do another 6 each and every year ....

You can do tourist exemptions / tourist visas until they pull you up on it, then you'll either need to buy an Elite visa or incorporate your business here and get a visa through that (I think this would be the best option as it means you can still legally manage your business even when you're here).

With regard to living costs, it depends more on your spending habits than anything else.

Sorry I wasnt doubting you, just curious. I did the same and more cutting grass and hedges in London. There was a time just before covid, my thai girlfriend, lived in New York, wasnt keen on moving to London. I also had a friend working at British Airways, offered me his staff consessions. So on a Thursday or Friday morning, I'd go to work, squeeze in a few jobs, crack the whip and keep the boys motivated then leave them to it, while I rush to the airport to jump on the next flight to NYC, but its BA's busiest route, LHR-JFK, Like 15-17 flights a DAY, and then some to Newark too, so they take off at least every hour from Heathrow, and I live 30 mins from the airport in the Heathrow Express Bus, comes just one mile from my home, and £2.40, all the way. And at the other end, the airport bus too, $11.50 into central station, midtown, but can take upto an hour. But inbetween, I'm in BUSINESS CLASS, every time, as there is so many flights, there is always empty seats available for staff travel. You can pay a little premium to guarantee a business class seat, bumping you up the priorty order, but like less than £100 extra return. But its easy to view the bookings, and see where the empty business class seats are. I think only once or twice the checkin staff suggested I wait 40 mins for the next flight if i wanted business. And once you have a staff booking on the system, if you don't take your flight/seat, it rolls over to the next day automatically. And if you happen to arrive early, days early even, the staff will just get you on the next seat as normal, win/win. So id book the flight with my friend, £280, return, and I can turn up at the airport at any time, even 3 days late or 3 months late, or 3 days early, and I just flash my passport and I'm in. No re-booking, no phonecalls, emails, nothing. Its like a golden ticket. My friend had high priority over other staff too. So there could be a pilot, or a pilots wife, or a technician with 45 years of service, with a ticket in there hand, walking to the gate, and I turn up and when they get to the gate, they get told their seat has gone, as I'm walking past them onto the plane with their ticket. I never did that of course, infact I offered my seat up once, I could see the guy was anxious to get on a flight, and i got the last available seat, so i asked the staff to put me on a later flight and gave it up. I wouldn't have done the NYC trip if it wasn't business class AND at £280, it would be too much to handle and wear me out. But for over a year, I was cutting lawns on a Friday morning, flying business class to new York. And getting there just in time for a late lunch in Brooklyn or the Lower East Side. It was surreal. Rock and Roll.

yep I like the thought of being semi retired by mid 40s and close to my girls that their mother wants to move and have schooling in China, the oldest is only 2.5 so I'm planning ahead. I'd get to keep only my favourite clients and just work really hard for a week and a half or 2

you will be fine just entering visa exempt I did the same for many years. your spending a lot of time in Thailand but living in Australia

A bit of context. My partner and i are close to breaking up, she is talking about moving my daughter and daughter due in august to china in the next few years. I don't want to live in China and Bangkok is only 3.5hrs from guangzhou.

If you are 50+ you can get a retirement visa. Otherwise habitual tourist visas. You can get multiple entry for either, this will save you a little hassle and a few dollars.

I have done back-to-back tourist visa for several years. In the past nine years I would estimate 60% of those are tourist visas. Many people in group say it's not possible but it seems to work for me.
Matt ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Terary *********
so you keep getting 90 day visas? How many times a year can you get one?
Terary **********
@Matt *******
Technically you can get as many as you want. Some claim there is a limit, that really depends on the embassy that you use. I would definitely shop embassy (get a visa from one, then another etc). The METV is your best bet. They are valid for 6 months, but if you stamp-in on the last day of it's validity, it can be extended 3 more months giving you a total of 9 months.

When I was shopping for METV from Australia I found Brisbane and Melbourne were the friendliest embassies.. I think post covid Brisbane Thai Embassy is gone, not sure about Brisbane. Point is, different embassies have different policies.

If you are showing that you leave Thailand every so often, the Thai authorities won't care too much about you coming. They are more concerned about people who don't ever leave.

You're first long trip here will be the most confusing.. After you experience how things work, the visa process will make more sense... Thai authorities are goofy.

Get the 60 day visa, or there's a 90 day one
Lauren ******************
I don't think you need a visa for that. Lots of Australians work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off Thailand vs Oil&gas or the mines etc you get 30 days on arrival. As long as you're not working here you are good :)
Jon **********
@Lauren *****************
also if you have a return flight booked to your own country, proof of funds will all be fine 🙂
Brandon ************
@Jon *********
"all will be fine" doesn't mean anything. It's up to the immigration officer and they can still deny entry if they feel it's excessive regardless of what you show them
Michael ********
@Lauren *****************
Eventually they say enough, i was flagged and even showed my seamans book to show was working offshore/vessel.
Luke *******
@Michael *******
well that’s not the case necessarily . You may have had other circumstances that we don’t know of. I have been in and out for 9 years, done probably 40x30 day extensions, 25xborder bounces, only ever entered Thailand on entry stamp (no visa ever). It’s just up to him/her that’s stamping you through. I would say always have an outbound ticket, always have proof of funds, never overstay and always be polite. There is no “rule/law” so it’s purely a guessing game. But from my experience the above things will always get you stamped. Not saying it didn’t happen to you mate just sharing what I know true/happened to me. You must really have got someone on a bad day!
Michael ********
@Luke ******
Yes you only need one official to flag you and they may have just had a bad day.
Luke *******
@Michael *******
agree 💯 but still stuck to if everything’s in order and polite and honest, problems rarely occur.

@Matt *******
Ok so not so many options available until you’re 50.

You can look at the multiple entry tourist visa, which is valid for 6 months from issue. With the right timings you can get almost 9 months off that visa. If you’re travelling that much you won’t need to look at getting extensions.

That will do you for a while, and you might get away with back to back ones but it’s not going to be easy for long term visits on those.
James *****
@Stuart ********
does this allow unlimited in and out but with a max stay of 30 days ?
Nongnuch ********
@James ****
no, during the 6-months visa validity of a METV, on each entry you will get stamped in for 60 days. Within the visa validity period, you can do an unlimited number of entries

unlimited in and out with a maximum stay of 90 days (60 day tourist stamp plus 30 day extension)
