TLDR : Answer Summary
To cover a 6-month stay in Thailand after initially entering visa-exempt for 2 months, you have a couple of options. The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) allows for multiple entries, providing a total of 60 days per entry, which can be extended by 30 days. After the initial visa-exempt period, you'd need to exit and re-enter Thailand to utilize the METV fully. Alternatively, a long-term option like the DTV (Thai Long Stay Visa) can provide stays of up to 6 months and can be extended through border runs for a fresh visa stamp, but requires sufficient funds to apply.

Im going to be applying for the six month multi entry visa. I’ll need to leave the country after 60 or I can get and extension of 30 days to make a 90 stay but I will still need to leave Thailand at some point and reenter. Plenty of neighbouring countries to visit so not a problem.

Mike Posivak yes or get an extension- I haven’t tried METV yet but I will be applying closer to April as I think it might be the stress free option.

a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) gets you stamped in for 60 days every time you enter Thailand during its validity period & every entry can be extended by 30 days

yes it seems to be the most stress free option although it is considerably more expensive than the single entry tourist visa and obviously arriving on visa exempt is zero cost apart from the 1900 Bhats if you want an extension (plus a visit to immigration with the required paperwork). My previous two trips were on visa exempt and an extension and then returning back to the UK for several months but next trip in April I want to visit Laos for a few days and probably Vietnam for maybe a week so I can time it in such a way that I won’t need an extension. All above board as well so I’m hoping re-entry will be straightforward.

Mike Posivak it will give you around 8mths if you time your final reentry correctly. Getting a DTV will allow you to stay 6mths for 5 years, do a border hop to get a fresh 6mth stamp.

Mike Posivak so you don't need a 6 month stay now, just a couple of months to get your required funds then you leave to Laos or somewhere to apply for your DTV

Mike Posivak That is fine, many do the same, just need to apply nearby like in Vietnam, Laos or Jakarta
