So if you want to stay in Thailand for 6 months, is it better to just come in on a tourist visa and then contact an agent in the country? By the way, I'm over 50.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To stay in Thailand for 6 months, you have two primary options: applying for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) or a Non-O Visa. The METV allows multiple entries and gives you 60 days per entry plus a possible 30-day extension at an immigration office. The Non-O Visa provides a 90-day stay that can be extended for 12 months if financial requirements are met, such as maintaining a minimum deposit in a Thai bank. Many community members suggest starting the application process from your home country for efficiency, while some recommend utilizing an agent in Thailand for a smoother experience.

Do you have a history of entering Thailand on "free" visa exempt stamps? It might be worth getting the 90 day Non-O before you travel then, at the end of that travel for a short break somewhere and return getting a 60 day visa exempt entry followed by a 30 day extension to give you the 6 months.
If you only want to stay for 6 months a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa will do that. Each entry gets you stamped in for 60 days and can be extended by 30 days at your local immigration office.
If you want to stay longer you can apply for one of the retirement visa options. The Non-O is the most popular, it gets you stamped in for 90 days and you can extend for 12 months at your local immigration office by meeting the requirements, it does mean you have to deposit a minimum of 800k baht in a Thai bank 2 months before applying for the extension though
