TLDR : Answer Summary
The best visa for a stay in Thailand not exceeding 6 months is the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV). This visa allows for stays of up to 60 days at a time, with the option to leave and re-enter the country for additional 60-day periods. Some users mentioned that obtaining this visa can be done without an agent, referring potential participants to the Thailand Embassy's website for detailed information regarding requirements and processes. The cost of using an agent can vary, but estimates suggest it could range around 50,000 THB.

I'll second the METV. The application is straightforward and with unlimited exit/reentry it's a great visa for traveling the region.

No need for agent.

Read the visasection of the Thailand Embassy website, there you will find all the options, and the requirements for each visa type.

METV can only be obtained in your home country or a country where you have permanent residence status. You must show proof of need, a ticket out of Thailand within the initial 60 days and then back into Thailand some time after that.

Tourist multiple entry lasts for 6 months ,you can only stay a maximum of 60 days at a time, when you leave Thailand your visa will allow you another 60 days when you return

or extending each 60 day entry stamp to 90 gives 6 months with just one border bounce
