I am arriving by air from canada and will be in thailland for a couple of weeks before leaving to laos by land boarder crossing. I will go onto vietnam before going to Thai islands for 3 weeks. This will put me outside of 45 days. I need to come back to bkk to fly home on day 97 of my trip. What should I get for travel visa? The multi entry is painful to fill out but if I have to I will do it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The traveler plans to enter Thailand from Canada for a couple of weeks, then cross into Laos, proceed to Vietnam, and return to Thailand for an additional 3 weeks before flying home. The comments clarify that upon the first arrival in Thailand, they will receive a 45-day visa exemption that cancels when exiting to Laos. Upon re-entering Thailand from Vietnam, if it's before March 31st, they will receive another 45-day exemption, which can be extended by 30 days at an immigration office for a fee.

Each time you arrive you will receive a new visa exempt 45 days, except for the last time when you will receive 30 days. No need to apply for any of these. You will be stamped in on arrival. Just make sure you are able to show evidence of leaving Thailand each time in case they ask.

Right now the 45 day visa exempt entry program for 52 countries runs until Mar 31st

So when you arrive the first time you'll get stamped in for 45 days <- that stamp will cancel when you stamp OUT of the country at the Lao border.

Then when you fly back in and re-enter the country from Vietnam IF it's before Mar 31 you will get a NEW 45 day visa exempt entry and you can extend that one time by 30 more days if you need to at the immigration office where you stay for 1900baht

and if by some reason you're actually entering the country AFTER Mar 31st the visa exempt entry will go back to 30 days on April 1, 2023

we will be returning to thailland April 14 to fly out April 16. That would be 3 visas. Do you see that as a problem?

not at all. It's obvious you're just a tourist in SE Asia and the immigration officers will see this as well.
