What travel insurance companies do you recommend for long stays in Thailand on a DTV visa?

Hey Everyone!

I got my DTV recently (workcation) :-) leaving for Bangkok tonight from London, UK. I'm a UK citizen.

I wanted to ask about travel insurance companies and any recommendations. I normally have annual travel insurance (running out at the end of the month).

But I know that it wouldn't be valid if something happens, because I will be staying longer than 30 days maybe 90 to the max 180 days in Thailand before leaving.

Any recommendations of companies I could contact for insurance to cover slow travel, nomadic travel where I stay up to 180 days in a country, I might travel to Vietnam in between or Malaysia for my visa runs.

Many sincere thanks in advance! :-)
Answer summary
A UK citizen traveling to Thailand on a DTV visa seeks recommendations for travel insurance that covers long stays (up to 180 days) and nomadic travel. Suggestions from the community include insurers such as SafetyWing, World Nomads, Cigna Global, and Allianz Thailand. Users caution about the limitations of some policies, emphasizing the importance of checking what is covered, especially for medical needs, and suggest consulting with local insurance agents for suitable plans.

Be careful about travel insurance like world nomads. Because they are not traditional health insurance and it does not renew, you have to purchase a new policy, so if you have an illness that spans across two different policy periods then they may consider it pre-existing from the previous period and won't continue to cover it in your second period. I had that happen to me once with world nomads where they refused to pay the second follow up treatment. Cigna Global works for expatriates and the price is quite cheap for Europe, but the Price is like 50% more expensive when the country of residence is set outside Europe. One solution is to ask them to have your country of residence set to somewhere in Europe where you usually or previously live and ask them to designate you as a digital nomad so that you can keep it in Europe. They might say something like as long as you don't spend more than 6 months in one country outside your country of residence, but that's not exactly what the policy wording says. So it's a bit of a risk if you want to trust the sales person whether that really complies with the policy terms.

Thanks John, yes I had a call with them this afternoon. Funnily enough the guy on the phone said Thailand is his favourite country in the world and he is leaving for there too in 7 weeks and then going again to Chiang Mai in November, what are the chances lol! Unfortunately the policy can only extend for 90 days.

Anonymous participant 90 days is good, at least you’ll be covered for that period, any longer then no cover, re sets when you go back to blighty.

Cigna Global is the best by far, but extremely expensive. There are budget options like Safetywings etc. but they're really just for emergencies, not a real health insurance. For example Safetywings basic doesn't even cover any cancer treatment, and if you have enough money to pay for Safetywings Complete, you might as well buy a proper health insurance.

Thank You for your helpful report 👍

Congratulations 👏👏👏

PRINT OUT THE EMAIL THAT HAS YOUR DTV VISA.

That's what you should do... print it out.

You may have to show PROOF of your DTV Visa to airline staff on check-in for your flight ✈️ to Thailand...even to the connecting airline staff. Or to the land border crossing entry Thai Immigration Officer.

Upon arrival into Thailand, show the DTV visa to the Thai Immigration Officer and look at the STAMP placed in your passport to be sure you are STAMPED in for 180 days.

Let me know if you don’t find anything you like.

I’m an agent with Allianz Thailand and I have helped many DTV visa holders to get a local health insurance. We have a wide range of options that may suit your needs and preferences.

Safety wings usually cheaper than World Nomads but both the only suitable choices really (as can be extended outside the home country)

just debunking your claim that ''They're all good unless you're actually sick'' THe truth is - They're all good unless you're actually sick (in cases when you dont correctly research what you are covered for beforehand)

which is why you read the policy before buying. The policy you buy covers everything the policy says it covers. Mic Drop

This is my last comment on the issue. The insurances you mentioned are cheaper than a real, comprehensive medical insurance for a reason. They're good for younger people that are in good health overall, and don't want to or cannot spend too much money on medical insurance, that's about it.

I do have a separate insurance for if I get sick but not sure if it covers me for being abroad. I will check, it is a good reminder thanks!

Anonymous participant I download the full pdf policy usually 1000+ pages, put it into an AI model then ask it questions directly to make sure you are covered for what you need.

@Sophie ****
depends on the policy you get, the cheaper options will only cover you for serious stuff and you wont be covered if you injure yourself while doing something illigal like driving without a licence etc.

you have to pay extra if you want them to cover pre-existing medical conditions.

Who said anything about illegal stuff? For the record, I have never done anything illegal, however I do have a few medical conditions and therefore some actual real life experience with some of these companies. Never mind, good luck to you and hopefully you'll never need to use them.

GENKI is more premium and has a better record of paying out than the others but you pay for it.

Try World Nomads. From memory they cover you for 12 months and you extend it as well

WorldNomads is quite expensive and not any better than Safetywings or other cheaper alternatives.
