TLDR : Answer Summary
The community suggests obtaining travel insurance before leaving your home country, emphasizing comprehensive coverage that includes health, trip cancellation, and repatriation. Recommendations for specific providers include Chapka, SafetyWing, Luma, Falcon, and using credit cards for travel insurance benefits. It's advised to check local websites for the best deals and policies fitting longer stays.
Use your credit card to pay for flights etc. Free travel insurance for 6 months, then contact them and pay for an additional 1 month.(Allianz) (I use Wpac card)

I’ve never used it, but I see a lot of people using SafetyWing travel insurance.
You should be getting travel insurance before you leave home, as you don’t say what country you live in, but if you live in Australia for example you can purchase a 12 month travel insurance policy.

I'm guessing you've never travelled and had travel insurance before. People generally take it out soon as they book their flight so everything is covered from day one. *Edit. Yes a 7 month policy at home might take a bit of a search.
Travel insurance is best bought in your homecountry, since it then also covers repatriation and / or relatives to come to you if serious illness / accident etc.

Most people get travel insurance at home before they leave, then flight, delay, cancellation, baggage, health, money, passport etc all covered.
