What should I know about extending my stay in Thailand for 75 days without a visa?

Hi Everyone! This is my first post and have been reading others and researching online for the answer, but I wanted to confirm with the group on my upcoming trip.

I’m planning a trip to Thailand and planning on staying 75 days (I have an exit flight booked). I understand that I can stay 60 days without applying for a visa, but I need the extension to complete my trip.

I’ve read that you apply for the extension when you arrive (I can’t apply for extension in advance 😔), so my question is, will I do this at the airport knowing my departure fight or do I have to wait until it is close to expiration and go to an immigration office? Or would I have to do a border run? I would want to avoid the later.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler plans to visit Thailand for 75 days and seeks clarification on how to extend their stay beyond the initial 60-day period allowed without a visa. They wonder if the extension can be applied for at the airport, whether it should be done at an immigration office close to the expiration date, or if a border run is necessary. Community members provide insights about the extension process, recommend checking airline policies regarding return flights, and suggest obtaining a tourist visa in advance for peace of mind.

If you still have time to apply a 90 day tourist visa from your country before coming in Thailand, I may say it’s hassle free option and you can enjoy the holidays fully without being bothered about when is the appropriate time for asking for the extension.

The extension is not free of charge. It costs THB1900 plus proof of stay such as hotel booking or rental agreement. Although the process & time spent at immigration office can be painless, you still need to make a trip there…

There is no "90 day tourist" visa..

Get a tourist visa on the Thai immigration website, costs like £30 and as far as I remember gives you the full 90 days

if I’m over 50 and not looking yet for retirement will I qualify? Also, I am doing some research into a medical treatment in Bangkok, but it’s not 100% confirmed I’m doing it. So it maybe an option.

yes you can qualify for a non O over 50 retirement visa without being retired along as you are over 50 thats the main factor.

you can enter on exemption for 60 days and extend by 30 in country. If you are undergoing treatment, discuss with your doctor or hospital, they can assist with visas. Or

Ah okay - I could have sworn I got granted 90 days when I applied for it last November but maybe I’m misremembering, I can’t find the visa reciept

If it was a Tourist Visa you got 60 days on entry then a 30 day extension for 1900B. If you were over 50 at the time you could have got a 90 day Non-O visa.

I would check with the airline that they will let you board knowing you have a return flight after the visa exempt runs out. They can ask you to have an return flight or an onward trip within the 60 day visa before they allow you on the flight, so i would check before you go to the airport

yes, but easy to book a legitimate flight in advance, to say SGN for peanuts, personally, I would take the short vacation in Vietnam over wasting my time at Thai immigration and paying 1900 for the 30-day extension. But, each to his own.

I've only been asked once by an airline to see my flight information for leaving Thailand (I think it was Emirates or Qatar Airways that asked). If you're super worried? You can book something cheap with OnwardTicket, just in case.

You'll be fine extending at immigration for the 30 days. The only warning I would give regarding immigration if its your first time is make sure you have everything they ask for as its often a long day and if they send you out to get more photocopies for example, you might have to wait longer when you go back in.

The 30 day extension is done at your closet immigration department 30 days before the orignal expires

Can be done 30 days before at most Immigration Offices and even 45 at some but only 7 days at Jomtien (and one other)
