If you book flights through the VIETJET app be aware that domestic fares are dealt with in Vietnam ONLY however international to Thailand are a different company and any inquiry must be directed to Thailand . Though it appears it is one company they will not issue credits to each other or share. The call centre number shown in the web site is for Vietnam ONLY . Thai vietjet is +6620891909 . I just wasted an international flight ! Fly AIRASIA as a much better and professional low cost airline .
Answer summary
When booking flights with VietJet, be cautious as domestic fares only apply within Vietnam, and their international service operates separately, requiring inquiries to be made specifically to the Thai branch. Additionally, when dealing with visa extensions in Thailand, particularly for marriage visas, applicants should expect a more rigorous process involving more paperwork, potential visits from immigration officers to verify the marriage, and various financial requirements depending on the type of visa.

I do not understand why it is a hassle honestly...

Three years in a row I renew my marriage extension and never had any problem.

You just have to print documents, sign them, take a few pictures, and draw a basic plan of the area where your house/condo is.

There is no "more interaction" with immigration officers, you just go with your wife to request the extension.

They can come to check if it's a real marriage, especially when there is no kid but in 3 years, it never happened to me. Of course, if there is a very big age gap, they might be suspicious but that's understandable.

No hassles, just follow all the paper work, get your wife to do it for you, it's easier that way, as they need her to be there anyway. My wife does it for me every year, of course I need to be there too.

There's another aspect to consider with an EOS-based visa if you're married to a Thai citizen. In the event of a divorce, you must leave the country as soon as it's finalized at the immigration office. If your spouse predeceases you, immigration will grant you a grace period to change your EOS visa type. Of course, this can change from one immigration office to another, as is usually the case. But the legal basis remains as described.

Paul Acourt Extension of stay. 😉After you arrived with a NON-O Visa for 90 days you go for a 1 years Extension of Stay. Andreas is correct about the rules, if your EoS is based on marriage, for divorce or your Thai partner dies.

This why I prefer retirement even I married to a Thai. And less paperwork.

a stay permit is not a visa. SADLY, Thai Immigration in their bad English, doesn't draw any difference. For them, a stay permit is "the visa". This is technically wrong
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
Paul Acourt when you arrive on a 90-days Non-Imm-O Family or Retirement visa, you will get stamped in for a 90-days stay permit. The visa itself will become invalid/used. This stay permit you will get "extended" on Immigration for one year. The EOS is the "extension of the stay permit" (and it can be based on being married to a Thai wife, or based on being over 50/retired. . . this is a typical EOS stamp. Keep in mind: the extension based on retirement is NOT a "retirement visa", regardless that hundreds of dvmb foreigner call it wrongly . . . . . . it simply is an extended stay permit

Andreas Mueller Yes sorry I meant the Court. Anyway it can be easier to stay on retirement. 😉

Question if you change to retirement do you need to fulfill the seasoning rules?
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
@Cyrill ******
yes, of course you will need a minimum of 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account for a minimum of 2 months, on the day you apply, for an extension of stay under another reason than being married to a Thai wife. Your need the bank letter that confirms the seasoning, and you need an updated bankbook and an ATM receipt of a smallish withdrawal on the same day
Andreas *********
Andreas *********
@Cyrill ******
not really true. In case of a divorce, your extension of stay remains valid until the COURT (not Immigration!) has issued the court order. This takes so much time that you will find alternative methods until then, to keep the stay permit alive - like switching to reason retirement

Sylvia Corley During the Crusades, Frankish control was extended further in the Middle East. Unlike previous Franks, these Franks were almost all Christian as opposed to older Franks who were mixed groups of different religions.

Over time, the word began to be used more generically. In 12th century, the term Frank became associated with all of Western Europeans (including the French, Italians, and the Flemish) in the Muslim world.

The term Frangistan (Persian: فرنگستان) was used by Thai and Muslims and was also used frequently by Persians. Muslim traders referred to all European traders as Farang and it entered much of the languages of South Asia and Southeast Asia as a term.

The word farang is from Persian word farang (فرنگ) or farangī (فرنگی), refers to Franks, the major Germanic tribe ruling Western Europe.

Frangistan (Persian: فرنگستان) was a term used by Muslims and Persians in particular, during the Middle Ages and later periods, to refer to Western or Latin Europe.

According to Rashid od-Din Fazl ol-Lāh-e Hamadāni, Arabic word Afranj comes from the Persian farang.

The etymology of the term "farang" is clear - it comes from the Persian pronunciation of the Franks of the Frankish empire (Charlemagne, etc) - "Ferangi", and traveled through Persian traders to Siam. A very similar terms is also in use in other parts of the region, such as in Hindi and in Urdu.

It has no relationship whatsoever with the French - that is an urban myth.

The term in itself is absolutely neutral with no negative connotation at all, and therefore not discriminatory in itself, which is why farang who tend to complain about Thais using it are generally making fools out of themselves.

Thais then on occasion apologizing is solely because of a cultural tendency for conflict avoidance and the concept of "greng jai", but generally hides bewilderment over strange particularities of certain farang who get rattled without any apparent logical reason.
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
Sylvia Corley sorry but this is WRONG. The word "Farang" has NEVER been associated with the French "farangsaise". The synonym Farang is older than the arrival of the French in Siam . . . It has no relationship whatsoever with the French - that is an urban myth.

they call me Khun Sylvia or Mama but falang is used as a general word for western foreigners which I do not find offensive. I thankfully have more important issues in my life than to worry about this detail! and modern history early Westerners visiting Thailand were associated with France, leading locals to shorten "French person" into the universal term for white foreigners farang
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
@Adonis **********
the word Farang is NOT an insult. It is an ages old synonym for white westerner people. It's origin is from the days of the crusades, when the knights and their soldiers invading Arabia and the Holy Land were the "Franks"

The most important is to know that a simple visit of your wife to immigration saying that your couple failed will immedatly cancel your visa. Been on the marriage visa now going on 4 years. If i could transfer over to the retirement i would in a heart beat, but still have quite a few years left. To the people saying the marriage visa is "straight forward" i question if they are on a marriage visa. Yes on paper it appears straight forward but it is not. Using an agent makes everything easy, but if you doing it yourself it is now. Rules and necessary paperwork changes constantly from IO office to IO office. If the IO your speaking to does not like your map, bam denied, if they dont think two signatures on your 150 pages appear the same, bam denied.

You are now required for the non O 90 day marriage part to have two witnesses, that live in your area, cannot be family, fill out paperwork, house books, ID cards etc, sign everything AND accompany you to the IO office. Which depending on where you live can be a massive pain as well.

Also depending on where you live i saw some "You may get a visit from the IOs" I dont know what offices that is, but we had 2 visits this year. The only "benefit" of the marriage visa is if your planning to open a business. Even then going from hiring 4 thais to only 2 is not a massive benefit.

First time yea it's tricky but if married in Thailand whole lot easier. Not sure if the money is a major factor, as 400,000 or 800,000 tucked away interest in Thailand is a shocker, but with marriage visa you can work as in retirement no work allowed, mind you getting a work permit not easy.

My wife and I have done the visa application for 5 years now and apart from the 1st renewal the others easy.

Pics of us at home outside gate with house number, goggle map of route from immigration to our place, letter from bank showing funds/ NZ Embassy avviadavit showing income. Letter from local Amphur stating yes married passport pics think they slso take wife's Thai ID pic.

That's it as I said at the start where were you married makes a difference.

1 year is a little more paperwork with picture of you 2 toghter in various places in your home and in front of house or building number. A map showing where you live preferingly handwritten. And you might get visit of an imigration officer at your home to check.

When you done it there is reporting the same every year.

There is no renewal of any extension it's full application every year so, same paperwork. Get the list of requirement and follow it. The worst extra work is take the pictures and go to shop and print them. But get extra copies for next year at same time.

I had original photo glued on A4 paper and made xolour copies of same each year as long as you stay same place

There are 3 different options to meet the financial requirements for the 1 year Extension of Stay based on marriage with a Thai female. (AKA marriage visa)

1. 2 months prior application date a minimum of 400.000 Thb in a Thai bank account on your name only.

If multiple account holders the money is divided by account holders.

2. an Affidavit of income of at least 40.000 Thb from your Embassy in Thailand OR if you Embassy does not provide this service:

at least 12 months of foreign deposits of minimum 40.000 Thb into a Thai bank account on your name.

3. If you work inside Thailand, the work permit, minimum salary of 40.000 Thb showed by 3 months tax and sso payments for you as well as needed staff for work permit.

Foreign ladies married with a Thai male do not have financial requirements.

You can choose the option you prefer.

You will enter Thailand on a 90-days Non-Imm-O family visa, and will receive a 90-days stay permit.

Before these 90 days expire, you need to apply for the “1-year Extension of Stay Permit based on being married to a Thai wife”

Immigration will call it a “visa extension”, but actually they don’t extend any non-existing visa, they are extending the 90-days stay permit to a “one-year stay permit”. The visa itself actually has become invalid for further use upon your entry

You can apply for a “1-year extension of stay based on marriage with a Thai wife” 30 days (45 days on some immigrations such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai) before the end of the 90-day stay permit you got stamped

To do this, your marriage must be recognized and registered in Thailand. Because Immigration will ask you to present a freshly printed Thai marriage registry document from the Thai Amphur. It is called Kor Ror 2, or Kor Ror 22 (whichever applies to your marriage)

In addition to other documents, a financial evidence must be provided:

Either

You have a Thai bank account in your sole name and a deposit of a minimum of 400,000 Baht. The money must have seasoned for 2 months on the day of application,

or

You got a legalized statement of your country’s embassy in Bangkok/or of a honorary consul, about a regular monthly income of at least 40,000 Baht (a so-called income affidavit)

Some embassies, like the U.K., the U.S. and the Australian embassy, don’t issue affidavits of income any more. In this case, Immigration will ask you for a bank statement of 12 months of consecutive money transfers coming in from abroad over a minimum of 40,000 THB. So, in the first year, you won’t easily get around the 400,000 Thai Baht account deposit method

The combination method, which is accepted for the application to the “retirement extension”, a mix of a deposit plus income, is not possible for an extension based on being married to a Thai wife.

You will need to present (this list might not be accurate nor complete, as some requirements are Immigration specific, and you need to visit your Immigration and ask for their handout list)

*** a copy of your passport detail page

*** a copy of the entry stamp

*** a copy of the pdf. visa document

*** a copy of the most recent TDAC (if applicable)

*** a filled out TM7 form (can be had on Immigration)

*** two signed memorandi of understanding (which you get on immigration

*** photos showing your wife and you in front of your house, with house number visible

*** Hand-drawn map of the location of your house. Some Immigrations accept a printout of google maps and geo-data

*** 1900.- THB application fee

If you meet all the requirements, immigration will stamp your passport or clip a paper into it, stating “application under consideration. Please visit us” . . . and a date, in most cases 4 weeks away

Within these 4 weeks, Immigration will visit you and your wife at home, they might ask your neighbors whether you are really married and live there.

As soon as the “under consideration” period has expired, you can pick up the passport from immigration with the completed and stamped one-year extension of stay permit.

It is recommended to buy at least one single re-entry permit for 1000.- THB (you need to bring two passport pics for that) because should you exit Thailand during the one-year Extension of Stay Permit period, the re-entry permit keeps your extended stay permit alive

Richard Hornby for the application to the Non-Imm-O Family visa and the subsequent 1-year extension of stay (married to a Thai wife), the income requirement is a minimum of 40,000 THB. The marriage extension of stay involves quite a lot more paperwork and more interaction with immigration. When you apply for the extension it goes under consideration for a month or so and immigration can visit you at home to verify your marriage, speak to neighbours and so on. At the end of the month you go back to immigration to get the other 11 months stamped into your passport. 12 month retirement extensions are usually issued on the day you apply

I changed over from a retirement extension to a marriage extension in January this year .

It is a lot more hastle , with more paperwork and a higher level of scrutiny from the Immigration Officer dealing with your application . This is because even after they accept your application , it is then sent to head office for further scrutiny that takes 1 month before it is finally accepted and the extention is issued and that is only after a home visit at their convenience.

Now Ive gone through the process , I am confident that It will all go smoothly next time .

The obvious benifit is only having to season
*****
0 baht for 2 months prior and then it can be withdrawn and used for the rest of the year as long as it is seasoned again 2 months before your next extension .

Imo there is no other real benefit over a retirement extension .

Many visa agents wont do

marriage extensions because of the extra scrutiny .

Malcolm Pogue The extra 1 month is the "under consideration" period which is simply giving them time to visit your house. It's by no mean an added scrunity in the sense that they are not there to cancel on you but simply making sure that you live where you said you live and with your wife.

As of your mention of agent, most of them will do marriage extension as it's pretty straight-forward for them. There is no extra scrutiny because the process is not the same as the one you went through. For example, with an agent, you can get your passport back with the final stamp within a week of your application. They do not visit your house at all. They simply keep your passport for a few days and you go get it back shortly after. Also, you can by-pass the financial requirement if needed.
Malcolm *******
Malcolm *******
3 agents turned me down and I met all the financials ect saying its too much hastle . Thats why I did it myself .

I was told by my immigration officer that approval needed higher scrutiny before acceptance when I returned after I month and the extension had not been approved and return when she rang to say it had been approved .

They visited my house 5 days after my initial visit ,

I have explained my experience as it happened at Jomtien immigration . If its different elsewhere thats not surprising tbh .
Sujy *********
Sujy *********
Malcolm Pogue Agents are looking for clients that don't meet the financial requirement, as it's how they make money. If all you need is for them to hold your hand at immigration, the few thousand baht in agent fee is not worth it for them. At Jomtien, agents charge around 20-25k for yearly extension, but those clients don't meet financial requirement so the agent put the money there at the bank. Jomtien is notorious for having a tons of agents, and an immigration office that work independently. Which mean that the bribe is distributed between agents and officers, there is no other party involve.
