Need visa choice guidance

My wife of over 6 years is a Thai national, but also has US Green card

I am American

I Already have non-immigrant 0 approval I can use up until May 10

She has title to a house we built 7 yrs ago, and is there now

She has terminal illness, and returned to house this week, with my daughter to help.

I will arrive in 10 days, and want to stay for as long as needed .

I can also show income or fund a K bank account.

So...

What visa should I apply for, and where, and if I should be getting professional help, then please give me best choice and contact info.

I would like to do all the preliminary stuff in the week I have before I travel.

Thanks
Answer summary
An American citizen, whose wife is a Thai national with a terminal illness, is seeking guidance on the appropriate visa to apply for in Thailand. He has a Non-O visa approval valid until May 10 and wants to stay indefinitely to care for his wife. The community suggests he consider applying for a marriage visa or a retirement visa (if over 50), or a 6-month METV to allow for visa runs. Important steps include opening a Thai bank account, depositing required funds, and possibly consulting a visa agent for assistance.

From an opposite requirement she has to return to the USA every 6 months to keep her green card valid. If she does I guess a trip to Hawaii for a week would satisfy that requirement.

You are registered in thailand as married? Kor Ror

or 22? As you don't have a Thai bank account, I would open one immediately after arrival and deposit THB 400k and keep it there, if you can. Use your wife's family to help if possible as banks can be tricky nowadays.

Make sure money is there for 2 months and you should be able to extend the 3 months Non-O visa to a 12 months marriage Non-O visa.

I wish all the best to your wife.

is your Age over 50 years old now??

Since you already have a Non–O E–Visa from a Thai Embassy/Thai Consulate in the USA, then is the Non–O E–Visa based on Marriage to a Thai Wife or based on Age over 50 years old??

OP
Dca Dca it doesn't state anything on the visa, but when we applied we sent all of the facts including a letter from her Oncologist explaining my wife's health status 😔

As you already have Non O, is it worth entering on that then applying for a one year extension based on marriage?
Graham ******
Graham ******
Ralph Tyson the first extension must be for the same reason the Non-O was issued but it can be changed for the second year ;)

Graham Seal Thanks. He doesn’t actually say what the Non O was issued for but I’m sure he can use that for the extension.

Geezerboy1940 You will need an extension so have your money transferred within 2-3 weeks of arriving to season 2 months for your extension

you arrive March 1 that gives you over 2 months to renew. just show bank statements like last year for your thai bank account. you have a residence so the TM30 is good. Get a visa agent for the paperwork.
Lynnette *******

Larry Wheeler he doesn't renew anything, he's got a Non-O visa and only needs to enter, open bank account, deposit 400k then get extension of stay for 12 months, cost 1900 tbt. Immigration office will tell him what info they need for this. Doesn't need an agent.

Lynnette Munoz remember you need to translate your marriage documents to get an extension based on marriage. I did not do it but because I was over 50 I got the retirement visa which was much easier. Still have not translated any marriage documents. I had tried using my marriage license and certificates but not good because was not translated

You have a Non-O and a Thai bank account so after you arrive and with 30 days remaining on your entry stamp you apply for a 12 month extension of stay by meeting the requirements including the banked money requirement

OP
Graham Seal i do not have a Thai bank solely in my name, and our joint account is not with K Bank.

I can show... IRS 1040 tax return filed in 2025.

Graham ******
Geezerboy1940 Not for your first 12 month extension, with a US passport the only way is with 800k seasoned bank funds in your name, 1600k in a joint account if the Immigration Office will accept joint accounts

The good thing is that her illness is covered under the Thai healthcare scheme

Apply for a marriage visa or a retirement visa if you’re 50+

If not apply for a 6 month metv that will give you 9 months with strategic visa runs

In that time apply for a retirement or marriage visa

Good Luck

We have an oncologist lined up who practices at Prince Hospital in Lamphun (near our house) on Wednesdays. We have had a video call and also sent medical records, emails.

She seems competent, concerned, and willing.

Geezerboy1940 ask and inquire about things that can be done under the UCS

I understand you can fund it…but everyone loves saving money

Medical is expensive everywhere in the world so if you can save $10k USD over time it’s well worth it

Like all things Thai you have to

Talk

Don’t take no for answer

And stay on top of it

If the govt hospital can’t provide care the Thai clinic she is registered at has the ability and authority to move her to a hospital that can care for her….

If she’s in bkk and has a hospital that can’t help her she can ask to move to Sriirat hospital, Chula, police hospital where they can treat her outside her govt hospital

Also at night (1800-2000 hours) the dr’s do appointments at the government hospitals for many ailments it’s not free the consultation usually costs ฿550-฿650 baht but they can prescribe basically anything from MRI’s to surgery under the UCS (free)…

It’s all covered, you just have to stay on top of it and talk the Thai way of talking
