What should I know about applying for a Thai visa with a Syrian passport?

Does anyone have any experience with applying with a Syrian passport? My friend is wanting to apply, but has had issues getting visas with her passport in the past. If anyone has any experience with a Syrian passport or other compromised passports, it would be great to hear!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on the experiences of Syrian passport holders in applying for a Thai visa. It emphasizes that applications must be submitted at embassies outside Thailand. There are various challenges, such as additional processing time required for Syrian passports and the necessity of obtaining visas from specific consulates. Key points include the importance of knowing the current location of the applicant and recommendations for applying through Thai embassies that can facilitate online payment without the need for in-person visits.

1.) For any DTV E–Visa or any Thai E–Visa Application can only be Submitted OUTSIDE Thailand, the immediate question is:

Where is this Syria Passport holder located now?

2.) So, not knowing where they are at now, before thinking about applying for a DTV E–Visa or where to apply for a DTV E–Visa, permit me to speak about applying for a LAO Visa for Syria Passport holders (and I would imagine would be very similar for Vietnam and Cambodia):

in that, Syria Passport holders CANNOT get a Lao Visa on Arrival (Lao VoA) nor a Lao eVisa and must get a Lao Visa at a Lao Embassy/Consulate beforehand in order to make entry into Laos.

This would almost always entail getting a Lao Visa Agent to facilitate obtaining mandatory Pre-Approval from the Lao Consular Department in order to apply for a Lao Visa at a Lao Embassy/Consulate (of which there not that many Lao Embassies/Consulates around the world)

in summary:

best NOT to apply for any Thai E–Visa in Laos

3.) One will find that nearly all Thai Embassies/Consulates will have additional processing time and possibly other additional requirements for Syria Passport holders as they must send the Thai E–Visa Application to Thailand MFA (Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs) for Approval before they start processing and issuing any potential Thai E–Visa for Syria Passport holders

4.) One advantage of the Thai E–Visa system nowadays is that the Syria Passport holder might just be better off to stay where they are Now (OUTSIDE Thailand) and submit their Thai E–Visa Application to the Thai Embassy/Consulate that has jurisdiction over where they are located now and hopefully that particular Thai Embassy/Consulate accepts only Payment via the Thai eVisa Website, so as there would be no need to go in-person to make a Thai E–Visa Fee Payment

5.) Again, it would really be helpful to know where they are now, because the usual method of being able to "shop around" and research going to any particular Thai Embassy/Consulate nearby Thailand in order to apply for a DTV E–Visa is truly curtailed and limited for Syria Passport holders

6.) I would 1st research where a Syria Passport holder can easily go nowadays around the world, then respond back with such a list of countries so as to find out about Thai Embassies/Consulates located in or having jurisdiction over those countries that Syria Passport holders can go to, then a more informed response as to what tips for submitting a DTV E–Visa application at those particular Thai Embassies/Consulates....

this is great advice, thanks so much! I’ll definitely see if I can help them find that information. They’re currently in Thailand on a working visa, but were recently furloughed due to budget cuts, which is why I’m trying to help them find out this information.

They’ll have to leave Thailand anyways, so I’m just trying to see if there’s any way for them to improve their chances and hopefully find a situation which can expedite the process.

Thanks so much for taking the time!

Anonymous participant a possibility for Syrian passport holders is going specifically to Phú Quốc island in Vietnam as Phú Quốc island is a special area where any passport can make entry into Phú Quốc island (Vietnam) and not need a Vietnam Visa

However, do note that Phú Quốc island is located in Kiên Giang Province and Kiên Giang Province in under the jurisdiction of the Thai Embassy in HANOI, NOT the Thai Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City

So, anyone could apply for a Thai E–Visa in Phú Quốc island, but need to submit their Thai E–Visa Application to the Thai Embassy in Hanoi

An alternative for Syrian passport holders is Malaysia in that Syrian passports have free visa exemption entry into Malta, but the Thai Embassy/Consulates in Malaysia are known to be more thorough about documentation than other nearby Thai Embassies/Consulates in the region

A Syrian posted about his experience in that old Reddit DTV thread from last July (it's now archived). He was a resident in a neighboring Arabic country (can't remember exactly which). He had a rough ordeal and his application dragged on pending document check for months until he was finally approved around September.

thanks for the feedback. I’m wondering if she were able to apply in Laos or Vietnam if it may be able to help her. But this other commenter says it’s only possible at the embassy?

Anonymous participant they currently have a working visa in Thailand, but due to budget cuts they may lose her job and visa. They want to find a remote position and stay in Thailand, but is exploring all options. I know it’s not an ideal situation, but I’m trying to find a way to help them in the interim while they get their footing
