How does the Non-Immigrant OA visa extension work in Thailand, especially regarding health insurance?

We are on OA visa valid til July 2020. Just returned from Hanoi to CNX. Extended til 24 Dec 2020. Not asked about health insurance. Although there was some shouting about OA as we approached. Maybe if we were nearer the expiry...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Non-Immigrant OA visa allows for a 1-year entry period every time a holder re-enters Thailand while the visa is valid. Recent experiences indicate that when re-entering, applicants received a new one-year stamp without being asked for health insurance immediately. However, upon application for an extension or a new OA visa, proof of health insurance will likely be required.

you didn't "extend" anything :O That visa gets you stamped in for a whole year EVERY time you enter the country while the visa is valid. you got a NEW year entry stamp is all.

the second year of a multi entry Non-Imm-O/A comes without any re-entry permits, so look out, always buy a re-entry permit when you plan a trip abroad after the 1-year validity date of the visa itself

I had non/ OA visa which expired last Oct 18 after one year was told just go across the border come back and you will get another year the border guard ask if I would be leaving the country again I said no. But I forgot I was going on a cruise and just got home. She stamped for one more year, so I thought I was good till Oct 2020. So we fly back from Singapore and they only give us 30days. Now they tell me I should have filled out a re- entry permit. So make sure you ask before leaving.

There's a pretty big sign at Suvarnabhumi pointing to the area where you get your re-entry visa. With respect, you cannot expect the Thai authorities to spoon feed you. There's stacks of information on a number of groups which emphasise this

Nobody at anytime said I needed one

@David ********
can't you buy a re-entry permit at the airport as you leave?

Thanks. So when will they ask for insurance as far as we can know? At the end of year 2?

@Toby *******
. There have been conflicting reports about IOs requesting insurance when entering the country. Worse case scenario is you get stamped in for 30 days, giving you that time to organise insurance and present the proof to the authorities who will then extend the admitted to stay for the full year. There's been no reports of people being denied entry. If you apply for an extension in Thailand you will have to provide proof of insurance, and if you apply for a new OA in your own country you will also have to provide proof of insurance

No, if you leave the country and come back with valid multiple entry visa you just get a new period of stay. In your case as you have the Non Immigrant O-A visa it is 365 days.

Oh OK. Thanks. If we leave and come back just before it expires in July. That's not called extension?
Robert *******
nothing has been extended. You just got the normal 1 year Admitted to Stay period. As you entered today, plus 365 days is 24 Dec 2020.

Should they not have extended it for another year
