What should I do after receiving an METV instead of the DTV I applied for?

Hi everyone!

Looking for real experiences on a frustrating situation 😅

My situation: I applied for a DTV in Jakarta (e-Visa, paid the full ฿10,000 fee — the receipt literally says "Type of Visa: DTV")… and got a 6-month METV instead. No explanation. The embassy just replied that visa category is "at the Consul's discretion". I probably shot myself in the foot by putting a return date ~2 months out in the travel details, which likely made them think a tourist visa was enough.

I fly to Thailand tomorrow, so I'll enter on the METV for now. But I really want that DTV. A few questions for anyone who's actually been through this:

1. Refund — did anyone ever recover the fee difference (paid DTV price, got a cheaper tourist visa)? Through the embassy, the MFA complaint portal, or a card chargeback? Any success stories, or just horror stories?

2. METV cancellation — has anyone managed to get an already-issued METV cancelled so they could reapply for the DTV right away, instead of waiting the full 6 months?

3. Applying while a valid visa exists — can you even submit a DTV application while your METV is still valid, or is it a hard block until it expires?

4. Applying from inside Thailand (VPN) — I keep seeing this mentioned. Does it actually work in 2026, or are they now checking entry stamps / requiring proof of location? Anyone done it recently?

5. Applying to an embassy without being in that country — is physical presence really enforced everywhere, or are there embassies that still accept remote applications?

6. Best embassy to reapply from — for someone based around Bali / SE Asia, where's smoothest right now (Vientiane, HCMC, Taipei, KL…)?

Any first-hand experience hugely appreciated 🙏
Answer summary
A user expressed frustration over receiving a 6-month METV visa instead of the desired DTV visa after applying in Jakarta. They seek community experiences regarding possible refunds, canceling the METV, applying for the DTV while holding a valid visa, and the best embassy locations in Southeast Asia. Community responses emphasize that refunds are usually not possible, that the METV can only be canceled by the issuing embassy, and that applying for another visa while holding a valid one is typically not allowed. They recommend using the METV for the duration and applying for the DTV afterward.

Pardon me, but if you are going to break the rules and correct process in applying for the DTV visa, I suggest you forget about applying for it. 🩸

It's obvious you are NOT 🚫 going to follow the process required to apply for and obtain the DTV visa.

There's NO challenging the fees for the DTV visa with your credit card.

Unless you are serious about following the correct process of getting a DTV visa, I suggest you find another country to play your visa games.

1- Based on the experiences of other applicants, you are unlikely to receive a refund for your application.

2- You can write a letter to the embassy requesting that they cancel your METV because you intend to apply for a DTV instead. However, I would advise against doing that. If you don't clearly explain your genuine intentions, it may make your application appear suspicious.

3- The embassy will be able to see your previous visa applications in their system. If you still want to pursue this, write a well-structured letter explaining why you now wish to apply for a DTV. That said, I think it's better to use your METV first and then apply for a DTV about six months later.

4 and 5- They can see your travel history through your border entry records. In some cases, repeated or unusual applications could lead to closer scrutiny, which may make future visa applications more difficult.

6- I don't know the answer to this one.

Did you contact them to ask for the reason for the rejection? Because it's not clear whether what you claimed they said is from the automated decision email or something that they reply to you after you tried to ask them.

And did you submit a cover letter explaining your travel plans to Thailand for the next 5 years so that they know you're coming multiple times for several years or did you only tell them something like you're leaving after only 2 months?

Did they not ask you for proof that you were in Indonesia? How are you intending to get around that requirement?

1. There is no refund

2,3. You will have to wait your METV to expire and then you can reaply for DTV

4. Applying for DTV while being in Thailand does not work in 2026 and it did not work before also. Actually as far as I know you cannot apply for any kind of visa while being in Thailand, you can only get an extension in Thailand. They require proof of location( stamps in passport, valid flight bookings, even photos in the actual location). And it is completely forbidden

5 Just like at 4. You will be required proof of location

6. It mostly depends on your documentation, if you have a week one or booked only 6 months of soft power activities, then you might end up again with METV or even being rejected.

With that said, enjoy your METV for the next 6 months and good luck with your next application

It’s their country and their discretion.

You need to follow their rules.

Apparently you did not show a significant need for a 5 year visa.

Consider yourself very fortunate that they gave you the METV and did not flat out reject you and keep your fee.

Have a nice time in Thailand.

Jakarta recently has been issuing METV quite often instead of DTV. Just accept it has happened. You could try to have it cancelled and apply elsewhere but you need to have Jakarta cancel it first. Trying to game the system might end in tears ie applying in Thailand. Why not take path of least resistance. Do 6 months on the DTV then go to Laos or Vietnam to apply then. Good luck.

Use the MTV first for all the 9 months, then try to get a DTV.

I guess you didn't like the answer I gave you some hours ago in another group but changing where you ask the question doesn't change the answer

If your application doesn't show the need for a DTV it's common for an METV to be issued in its place. You won't get a refund and the only consulate that can cancel it is the one that issued it so that's probably unlikely to happen. Make the most of the METV while it remains valid and once it expires you can apply for a DTV again.

As to your other questions you must be within the jurisdiction of the consulate you apply at and you must remain within that jurisdiction until the process completes, and yes they do check your location using various means including requesting entry stamps, time stamped photos with a local landmark etc, even requesting you attend the consulate in person. Avoid KL if you apply again somewhere once the METV expires, the rest are OK.

she probably asked in both groups at the same time. New posts don’t automatically show up here. The admin (who is unknown to us) has to approve the posts, that is why they always show up here in batches. So she probably posted it hours ago and the admin approved it when it popped up here

DTV_BegPecker I noticed that people tend to ask the same questions many times and in many places hoping that somebody will give an answer which they want to hear even if that is not the correct answer. But somehow it makes them feel better, until they experience the contrary in real life

Ok, many questions here. Jakarta is known to issue METv when they think a DTV isn’t needed. A return flight two months later is most likely the reason they made that decision, as this is similar to what some others who received it had done.

1. Refund: Not going to happen. You are not paying for the visa, but paying for the review/decision. Similarly, those who get rejected do not get a refund. Instead of rejecting you, Jakarta gives you a METV instead. You could attempt a charge cash back. That is initially between you and your bank, but you did get the service you paid for, you just don’t like the outcome. So technically, that is fraud. Also, I am sure the MFA won’t like it if you are successful, as you are declaring via your bank that they fraudulently charged you.

METV cancelation: like all visas, it can only be canceled by the embassy that issued it. Some have had success while others have not. Not sure I have heard anything specifically about canceling via Jakarta.

3. Applying while having a valid visa: can’t do this. Sure way to get the new application canceled and to lose that application fee as well, it is the same portal, so they can see you have been issued a visa.

4. You need to be in the country that you are applying via (not Thai). Most embassies in the region will ask for proof that you are in that country, usually by asking for your entry stamp for that country. Some people seem to get away either applying via their home country, especially Europe or US, because often don’t get a stamp and the proof you often supply is a local bill in home country, which many still have. However, places like the UK make you purchase your plane ticket up front, which I assume is a way to attempt to stop applicants from doing that. There is always the chance that they will require an interview

DTV_BegPecker to add some context: When I applied for my DTV I used a real fully paid ONE WAY ticket.

I don’t suggest one should try and trick the system. She would have to leave and reenter Thailand if she was successful in tricking them, so why not just leave it so it correctly

Recover the fee, No Chance. They looked at what you provided and decided you did not need a DTV, that a 6 month visa was sufficient. Think yourself lucky under the conditions of DTV if your denied you forfeit the fee. They don't have to give you the 6 month visa at all they could just say denied and the payment is gone. You cannot apply for DTV inside Thailand under any circumstances. If you are already here they know, a VPN does not disguise the fact your passport was swiped on entry. If you apply remotely from manother country You may also get called for an interview. So it's really highly recommended you pick a location to apply from and stay there until it is approved. As for the best country to apply - Your passport home country, they understand your documentation & language best and that gives you the best chance. Many people fail in Asia just because VN LA, rtc did not properly understand the foreign documents.
