Can I cancel my Ed-visa after applying for a DTV in Cambodia?

Hello

I am on a 1-year Ed-visa currently which will be expired in August. I am preparing to apply for DTV in Cambodia. I am aware that I have to cancel my Ed-visa.

1) Can I do it after my DTV is approved and when I am back in Thailand?

2) If I must do it before I apply for DTV but decide not to and do it only after my DTV is approved, are there any consequences?

Many thanks in advance kha _/\_

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently holding a one-year Ed-visa set to expire in August and is seeking advice on the cancellation process while applying for a DTV visa in Cambodia. They ask if they can cancel their Ed-visa after their DTV is approved or if doing so beforehand is necessary, along with potential consequences of delaying the cancellation. Comments suggest that it's advisable to cancel the Ed-visa before applying for the DTV, with experiences from others indicating that some immigration offices require this step for a smoother application process.

Thank you, so let’s just say if I want to leave Thailand by Aug 20th, first I need to get the cancellation letter from the school (I guess I need to mention when I will leave Thailand in the application ), then 3-4 days before I fly to Cambodia, I go to Thai immigration and cancel the visa with that letter, then I am all set, right?

Anonymous participant but I think the difference between u and me is that for me I cancelled my ed visa just after like 3 months. I wanted to change to DTV regardless of my remaining ED visa. Are you planning to apply DTV before your Ed visa expires? If you are applying only after your ED visa expires, I don’t think you need to cancel in that case I am not so sure.

Anonymous participant yes that’s right, for me my school was in chaing mai so I went there but the thing was I can only cancel my visa in chaing mai coz my school was in chaing mai. For me I told the school when I want to leave Thailand and they mentioned that date in their cancellation letter. And then I took that letter to immi office in chaing mai, they gave me stay until that specified date.

My school told me it's preferable to cancel the extension of stay (ED visa) before applying for DTV. For some reason, in my school they don't differentiate between the visa itself and the extension stamps. They always say it's more reliable to do the cancellation before applying for any other type of visa.

Inform your school of when you want to finish studying there. They will give you a letter stating the last date you intend to study with them. In your last week before you leave Thailand, take that to the immigration office to cancel your ED stay. Then you can leave Thailand and apply for your DTV.

If you are actually on a visa you can't cancel it, you can only cancel an extension of stay. Assuming you're actually on the latter (look in your passport) you can go and apply for the DTV and cancel it after you return
