What should I do after my dtv visa application was rejected by the Norwegian embassy?

Nov 4, 2025
2 days ago
I got rejected & want to share my experience + hopefully get some advice on what to do next šŸ™

I applied for the dtv visa at my Norwegian embassy as a remote worker. I had over 500k in my account and i showed proof of earnings from a foreign company.

I got rejected due to not holding 500k over the past 3 months, as i acquired the final amount the same month i applied. (This is understandable, even tho it did not state i had to keep it for that long in the application)

The other reason i got rejected was because i was earning too little compared to the average Norwegian salary. (They stated the average salary should be around 70k $ a year...)

I now plan to re-apply in desember as i have then held the money for over 3 months. The initial plan was to apply in Saigon but i have recently read its a high case of denied applications. Therefore i was wondering if anyone has any recent experience with the embassy in Manilla. If so, i would be really happy for any advice ā˜ŗļø

I also plan to change my application to soft power activity (Muay Thai), because it seems like this way has a higher chance of getting approved.

TLDR : Answer Summary

They seek advice on reapplying in December after meeting the financial requirements and are considering applying from Manila instead of Saigon due to a high rate of visa denials there. Comments from community members provide insights on embassy policies, personal experiences with visa applications, and suggestions for improving the application before reapplying.

it sounds more like a rejection because they didnt see your work as sufficient. and on 600 €$Ā£ a month it will be cheap charly frugal lifestyle. not sustainable. they know it, i know it, you hopefully know it, everyone knows it.

better apply elsewhere and fix your income

Same here, had to great a sponsor. Approved no problem. Sponsor prove incone 4 months and passport
Anonymous ******************
Application does say funds have to be in bank 3 months. I was short as in Ottawa it has to be open and close balance for 3 months. That ends up 4 months. I had to do sponsor
Anonymous ******************
What’s your income though?

I mean if your income is like 100$ / month, I’m not surprised they would reject that.

If I were to take a freelance job, and I have an income of 10$/ month, that should be acceptable because I have a job/ remote work as a requirement?

Providing limited information and receive the supporting comments about that, hope that will cheer you up a bit, but nothing would change and unlikely you will get the visa anywhere.

I guess the information that's missing is what your actual salary is. Perhaps it's so low that they consider that you can't possibly live on that in Norway?
Anonymous ******************
It sounds like your application is actually pretty strong, and the Norwegian embassy are being dicks. Go to another country to apply. Vietnam should be good, but if that worries you try bali

I miss that you showed a letter that you are allowed to do remote work from Thailand, but when they rejected you because of income that should not be the reason.

They stated specifically that it was due to low income. Compared to Norwegian salary its low income, but its really possible to live in Thailand with this

@Eivind ****************
it’s BS. You are going to work and live in a third world country where local have an average salary is 300 usd per month. And yet they have gut do so like if their country is Switzerland or Dubai. They are just trolling with people to think their country is so kind high value.
Dany ********
ThoughtfulLychee5096 you will never ever ā€žlive like a localā€œ and not anywhere near their budgets. never. its a stupid comparison.
Luit *****************
ThoughtfulLychee5096 Thailand is not a third world country, this classification is outdated anyway, but if you still want to use you should classify Thailand as "second world" and the average salary is about USD 375, but that is irrelevant because they don't want to attract average Thai salary people.

Just look at requirements for other visa and you can conclude THB 65k is what MFA thinks is appropriate as monthly income.

Opinions of what officialdom might want don't help. Time and money has gone into applying for an advertised product. Our energies should go into assisting applicants to secure that product at minimum effort and expense.

so just because you don’t agree with my opinion then you must delete my comment lol.
Luit *****************
ThoughtfulLychee5096 I cannot even delete your comment, what are you talking about?
Luit *****************
For some reason they have doubts about your job and income.

You mention you showed income from a "foreign" company.

Did you show a contract with salary mentioned in it?

Did you show monthly payslips?

Remember it is not up to you to decide the money is enough to live in Thailand, but up to them, you did not mention anything about the income, only that it is less than average, but not if it is substantial less.
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
They haven't 'decided' how much income is required to live on in Thailand. They've quoted average Norwegian annual income of $70,000 USD per annum. Such garbage is the reason we're here trying to help applicants overcome the glaring inaccuracies, inconsistency, arrogance and incompetence of government departments.
Luit *****************
@Christopher **********
he says it is substantional below average in Norway and considered as average in Thailand, he mentions 400-600 usd. I think the decision is perfectly logical, and would not call it garbage and all the other qualifications you mention.
Christopher ***********
@Luit ****************
The OP mentioned; ā€˜400-600$ a month + saved up money’. Depends how much savings and what formula is used to convert savings into additional income. Even mentioning Norwegian salaries is ridiculous. The applicant was already disqualified under the 500,000 THB for 3 months requirement. Doubt remains whether income is considered in all applications. We don’t know the actual minimum income requirement.

I just wanna say you are a really smart guy with critical thinking!

He lives in Norway, works for foreign company and earn a lot less than Norwegians earn - before considering if he can afford to live in Thailand. How can he afford to live in Norway? Is this job even legitimate?

If I earn 2,000 THB / month, am I supposed to be eligible for the DTV remote worker no matter what because Im a freelancer? So many things to consider and things just dont add up here.

Anonym deltaker 785 I work normal high paying job when i am in norway thats why i can save up money to live in Thailand for a while. My remote work is simply something i can sustain myself on in Thailand in addition to my saved up money. Which i thought was the main purpose of the DTV visa... 400-600$ + saved up money is enough to sustain my living

@Eivind ****************
you are not supposed to spend the 500,000 thats emergency buffer

@Luit ****************
I showed them both the freelance contract, and bank statement with the salary (monthly payslips). The payslips was substantial less than the average in Norway, but it is considered as an average wage in Thailand.

ThoughtfulLychee5096 Exactly what i was thinking.... Its really enough money to live on. Stating i should have an average Norwegian salary in Thailand makes no sense to me

@Eivind ****************
400-600 $ is not enough to live in thailand and sustain that for months or even years.

This can be found on the Thai embassy - Oslo’s website. They stipulate 3 months.

- Each embassy has their own website with their own requirements

Applied in Manila. Took 13 business days to get the approval.

Initial docs I submitted and what came next

- Employment contract: My contract has a specific clause about remote work so I didn’t create a separate letter. It was later requested that I provide a cover letter indicating what are responsibilities while doing remote work, the nature and profile of my employer, and samples of my work output, correspondences, online meetings.

- Proof of funds. I supplied a 3 month statement that shows starting and ending balance. However they did request that I share how I receive my salary (in a cover letter) and a highlighted bank statement showing income flow for last 3 months. In effect, I provided bank statements from 2 different bank accounts — my ā€œsavingsā€ one and the ā€œincomeā€ one

Thanks a lot for your information this is really helpful !

Anonymous participant 846 The advice I took from this group that I found to be very helpful is to organize your docs. A cover letter for each, esp for compiled pdfs, proper indexing, labels, and annotation might just be the difference

The embassy actually told you that these were the reasons for rejection? As a freelancer, my salary is way below 70K and they still accepted so that’s interesting 🤨

Anonym deltaker 467 Yes they directly told me that i had too low of a salary... Which is weird because i am pretty sure that you dont need to provide proof of salary when applying for soft power, and still get allowed to live there with only 500k thb
