What should I do after my DTV Soft Power Muay Thai visa application was rejected in Hanoi and should I consider applying from Laos instead?

I just got rejected in Hanoi for the DTV Soft Power Muay Thai route. I had a 9-month Muay Thai course, sufficient funds, and submitted all the required documents.

The only thing I’m unsure about is whether attaching my remote work contract (to show monthly income/salary) may have complicated the application or created confusion between the Soft Power and Workation categories.

Now I’m considering reapplying from Laos. Has anyone had recent success there, or can recommend another embassy/consulate that’s currently more DTV-friendly for Soft Power applications?

Thank you
Answer summary
After your DTV Soft Power Muay Thai visa application was rejected in Hanoi, consider the contentions raised regarding your submission, particularly the inclusion of your remote work contract. It may have created confusion over visa eligibility between Soft Power and Workation categories. Many users suggest reapplying from Laos, particularly mentioning success rates in Vientiane. Gather relevant documents while keeping your application straightforward, focusing on showing financial stability without overly complicating it with external income sources unless explicitly required by the embassy. Update on different embassies' processes indicates that many seem to be tightening criteria and may require a clearer delineation between Soft Power and remote work applications.

Awesome. It was super hassle free and straight forward for me when I took this route 9 months ago. (only thing I can recommend is to download the (loca app) if you want to take taxi's in Laos. Also carry $40 USD to pay the immigration there for your on arrival visa.. If you carry any other currency you will get screwed big time in the conversion rate. GL

. Yes USD when you arrive at the airport. Yes you can pay in Thai baht. But they get over on you to where you pay an extra 10-15 dollars (I know because I made the same mistake twice) I was in Laos for about 7-10 days. I can't really remember the exact amount. I got an b in the capital. But they have some nice hotels at a decent price too. They also have a good restaurant selection in the capital too so the week there didn't bother me too much.

Im so confused as well guys

This Is what i get from my experience and yours

- You need to show you can support yourself with savings and also believable regular remote income whilst you are staying

-Income floor unspecified

- And yet you are also unable to gain a regular remote income whilst staying as this would nullify visa purpose.

It's literally contradictory to me?

@Kerry ******
You can get remote income on SP DTV as there are embassies such as Taipei, Malaysia who require work contracts, pay slips etc. to be submitted with SP applications. There is contradictory info as embassies approve differently. I would focus just on the embassy you will apply at and apply accordingly.
Tahani *****
Tahani *****
OP
It feels like a lot of us are in the same situation now, where the issue isn’t necessarily the Muay Thai documents, but how they interpret the online/remote income part.

I’m still trying to decide whether Laos makes sense for me, or whether it’s better to go back to Europe and apply from there with a cleaner profile.

It’s just frustrating because the 500k baht alone should technically show financial stability, but then the application pushes you to declare an occupation, so it becomes messy either way

technically adding your remote work or income should support the application, not create more issues. But it seems like every embassy is interpreting the online income part differently now.

Please keep me updated after Siam Legal. I’m really curious what they say because I feel like this is the exact grey area a lot of us are stuck in.
Tahani *****
Tahani *****
OP
@Kerry ******
yes, that's exactly what I'm thinking. It doesn't even make sense. You can't really stay 5 years on 500k baht, so obviously you need to support yourself somehow. I thought it was a good idea to show that I have a remote job and get a monthly income, so I showed them my work contract. But then suddenly it's conflicting and too much? So, what is someone supposed to do? Crypto? OnlyFans? Is this the type of income they want to see?

@Tahani ****
It is embassy specific as there some embassies who require you to include work contract , payslips and even the business registration of the companies you work for. Some embassies it is enough to just mention it no proof required. It is ok to leave it out with places like Laos. They will ask you for further work docs if needed.
Tahani *****
Tahani *****
OP
@Andi **********
no I was told I shouldn’t include my work contract and payslips into a Muay Thai DTV application .. but then in the same time they want to know that you have an income .. so I am not really sure what to do once I reapply .. leave it out .. keep it in my financial part .. it might aswell be embassy specific so I don’t really know. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Honestly Tahani only way I see it and yes im in the same boat as you jakarta side is im returning to my home country for a hard reset. My visa probably had way more red flags anyway. But then I can also be very clear "its uk remote income, that I make when I come back to the UK" I do not see any way around the insanity. As of my application you had to state an occupation type. Living off savings wasnt even on there only other. Stay in touch on here, I really hope we get this. Im in contact with no less than 5 advisors but Im going to go to Siam Legal to get answers on this exact issue this week as I used them before. All the best

If you have legitimate remove working, and can prove this, and have a letter from your employer stating they they agree for you to work remotely in Thailand, you are far better off going down the remote working route and forget about your Mauy Thai course.

I believe that remote working is now viewed by the Embassies as a more valid reason for applying for the 5 year DTV. It’s a safer option fir getting approved

Incorrect, I have DTV workcation (freelance working) and absolutely no questions asked when coming back into Thailand across borders as well as into airports. I personally think that DTV for workcation is better for the five years duration. It’s fairly obvious that soft power courses will only last for up to a year, so people using soft power options are more likely to run into questioning after a year or more into their visas

It is a disturbing aspect of human nature that, while it is quite apparent that qualifying applications are being submitted and randomly rejected, many people not only refuse to accept this but go out of their way to put the blame on the applicant here. And they also proclaim that the good folks at the embassies are simply protecting the system from the huge numbers of fraudulent applications being submitted. Well I am here to say that I don't for a minute believe that it's the applicant's fault or that there are extensive fraudulent applications.

thanks a lot. I think my application was quite strong , I've been doing Muay Thai for a couple of years and am preparing for a fight in Thailand, which is why I mentioned I'd do another course after the 9 months are over ..Personally, I think it might have to do with including my work contract to show I can sustain myself with a regular income from outside Thailand. Maybe I should have left it out? Because even my finances were 3x the required amount and when they asked for additional docs they only asked for another entry stamp to Hanoi as the one I have sent them was blurry.

So I do think that especially Hanoi embassy is not the best anymore.

Also, my funds were originally held in my UAE bank account from February 14th, and over time I gradually transferred everything to my Spanish Revolut account, with the full amount moved there by April. Do you think that could create any issues or raise concerns during the application process?

@Robert ******
the DTV is a single visa type. No sub-category restrictions whatsoever. Yes, you can work online if you hold a DTV obtained via the Muay Thai track, however, if you stop training entirely to just work on your laptop, you are technically violating the specific purpose for which your specific DTV was approved. There is no Thai law that forbids you from working remotely if you got your DTV via the soft power track.

Because of how the legislation is written, the law completely treats a DTV holder who applied via Muay Thai the exact same as one who applied via the workcation route.

Purpose only states your eligibility and/or requirements to keep the visa valid, that’s it.

We have multiple clients approved via soft power who work online, run and manage companies, trade stocks and others who specifically mentioned this in cover letters in front of bank statements.

Alex Ni NO.

You are allowed to work on-line for companies outside Thaialnd IF you have the DTV purpose workcation.

NOT if you depend on another person OR if you told the Embassy that you visit Thailand to learn cooking after your Muay Thai training class.

OR that you visit Thailand based on being older than 50 years and wiling to sit out the rest of your life in Thailand.

This all is NOT my logic, I just explain the rules set by the Thai Minsitry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau.

BUT i guess you understand it very well, but it does not fit your agenda, so you keep making things up to avoid to agree.

@Robert ******
You are actually proving my point with the Non-O example.

Non-O is one visa category with different purposes/extensions:

- retirement

- Thai spouse

- child support

- volunteering

- dependent, etc.

A person can legally change the purpose/extension later while still remaining under the same Non-O visa framework.

DTV works similarly:

- Workcation

- Soft Power

- Spouse/dependent

These are different entry purposes under the same DTV visa framework — not completely separate visas with separate immigration classes.

The important point is that DTV itself was created for digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers. Thai embassies request proof of remote work, overseas income, freelance portfolios, and foreign employment specifically because remote online work for foreign companies is permitted under the DTV framework.

The restriction is local Thai employment without a work permit — not remote work for foreign businesses outside Thailand.

@Robert ******
have you asked properly straight forward?

Can dtv visa holders who apply with soft power course documents work remotely online for foreign companies outside of Thailand?
Robert *******
Robert *******
Alex Ni NO it does NOT. Try to learn something.

There are THREE different types (purpose) for the DTV, same as there are more purposes for Non Immigrant B, or Non Immigrant O.

YOU as application has the responsibility to apply for the correct purpose, you are not allowed to mix and match all different purposes to your benefit.

It that would be true and possible, apply for the Non Immigrant B to work in Thailand and after arrivial demand your 10 million Thbcondo and 1 Rai land just because you have the same visa as an investor.

Or apply purpose retired and demand to use 40k a month as you have the same visa as a married person and as it is the same visa you are allowed to work , do volunteerr work and many other things.
Alex ****
Alex ****
@Robert ******
DTV explicitly allows remote work for overseas employers, clients, or your own foreign business. The restriction is only against working for Thai companies without a Thai work permit.

That is exactly why Thai embassies request:

- remote work proof

- foreign employment contracts

- overseas clients

- freelance portfolios

- foreign income evidence

If remote work was prohibited, embassies would not ask applicants to prove it during the DTV application process.

Soft Power, spouse, dependent, and Workcation are simply different entry categories under the same DTV framework — they do not create different remote work rules.
