What should I consider when applying for a Non-O visa based on marriage while moving to Thailand?

ORIGINAL POSTER
My wife of 23 years (from Buriram) has been in the UK with me for 22 years and also UK paasport holder as well as Thai passport holder.

In July I start the application for Non-O visa but not sure which option to select on the E-Visa website. I’m not so clever with computer stuff.

As we have marriage certificates all in Thai as we were married in Bangkok, this is OK as we will be extending the Non-O based on marriage whilst in Thailand?

Not sure what other paperwork I need. The money will be in the Thai bank which i will open first day I land.

But applying for the Type-O is the first step and need to get it right!

Any help much appreciated m.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the applicant's query about applying for a Non-O visa based on marriage to a Thai citizen. The applicant seeks clarity on the e-Visa application process, necessary documentation (like marriage certificates in Thai), and how to manage their finances, particularly opening a Thai bank account. Various suggestions include applying for the Non-O visa before arriving in Thailand, ensuring the availability of funds in a Thai bank account, and obtaining necessary documentation like the Kor Ror 22 from a Thai district office. Participants share advice based on their own experiences with both the marriage and retirement visa routes, indicating different requirements and future extension processes.

Maybe I might do that Nigel. I just cannot risk any knock back as im desperate to leave the UK. With 800k invested from the first day I land in bkk, i have no fixed pension income. If I never drop below 800k, there is no requirement to show other income for subsequent extensions?

I am married to a Thai lady and use retirement for my visa and extensions for the reason that Nigel stated. If you apply for the non O based on retirement online before coming to Thailand and keep 800,000 in your Thai bank account, there is no need to do anything else financially, other than take proof from your bank to the immigration office when you apply for the extension. The extension process is very simple to achieve, it's just an a4 form with about 15 simple questions, supply photocopies of your passport documents and where you live, passport photos, the bank information and 1,900 Baht. It takes me less than an hour each year. Good luck.

do you need any photos of where you live? Or is that more marriage option?

Im trying to figure out the difference between marriage and retirement route. We have thai wedding certificates/registration and will rent an apartment. We will eventually build a small simple house in Buriram but wont be our permanent residence for 2 or 3 more years.
Stuart ***********
@John ********
no you don't need photos of where you live, but depending on which immigration office you use, you will need to draw a very basic map of the location of your rented accommodation.

@John ********
marriage route it's only 400 k in the bank

my wife has the blue book but, we knocked the house down last year with a view to re-building when we come to thailand. So cant take inside photo’s!!

We were planning on s 6 month rent somewere. Does this change anything?
Neil **********
@John ********
just ask they very helpful

@Neil *********
sure yes, but as the paperwork is less onerous for retirement visa, i will more than likely do the retirement 12 month extension route
Neil **********
@John ********
buriram immigration it's easy 15 minutes for paperwork, it's not difficult, but obviously upto you, good luck either way

my wife also from buriram? I want to apply for 1 years extension I have non o visa now..can you tell me what documents we need for apply extension?..I hear 400k funds for marriage I should 2 month old am I right?
Neil **********
@Yee ****
yes, wife's I'd card, house book, photos of you and wife inside house outside house, a map on how to get to your house just a quick drawing is fine, marriage certificate, a kor ror 2 certificate,which you get from your local government office confirming your still married, a bank statement on the day showing you have the funds, just ask the bank they will no what to give you, if you have kids there birth certificates and I'd cards
Graham ******
@John ********
but you said you are entering on a Non-O based on marriage so the first extension must be based on marriage then in subsequent years you can change the reason
Nigel *******
I have just done my 90 day None O, I have taken the retirement route, even though I am married to a Thai lady, and have a Thai child. The advantage of doing it from the UK, is that you can use income equivalent to 65,000 baht, in GBP, by showing 3 months bank statements. Or 800,000 baht equivalent in a savings account. I think for the initial 90 the application process is the same for marriage, or retirement, but they do ask you which one you want. When you go for the extension the retirement visa has less paperwork, which is why I am going down that route.

@Nigel ******
i think i will do this Nigel. Im not a paperwork person at best and not particularly competent with computer form filling.

Do I need to show the 800k bank statement BEFORE i apply for Type O from UK? I wasn’t aware that was a pre requisite for type O, only for 12 month extension
Nigel *******
@John ********
the bank statement is part of the application, there is a link to upload it. The income route needs 3 uploads, but only 1 link, so need to merge the 3 statements into one file. I did not manage this so they sent me 3 links, which helped me a lot.
John *********

@Nigel ******
yes I realised i couldn’t upload more than one document
Graham ******
@John ********
You have to upload 3 months of bank statements which show a minimum of 400k Baht equivalent throughout as part of the eVisa application

my regular bank account has around 250,000 THB as I move every month money to a savings plan with higher interest but also have a 2.5m THB fixed bond account which has just finished this week.

Im hoping that it doesn’t matter how many accounts i have and what type, so long as I have 400,000 THB and can upload several statements?

If you are currently in the UK. Speak to the Thai embassy in London. They are very helpful you can call them or even email too. They will advice

@Val ********
great will try that. I absolutely cannot fail.

Get the Non-O before coming to Thailand. Makes the process of opening a bank account much easier
Dca *****
That is a reasonable plan, as currently, it is very difficult to open that necessary Thai bank account in your name to obtain an Extension of Stay at your local Thai Immigration Office, if entering Thailand on a free Visa Exemption Stamp

If you make entry into Thailand on that Non–O (based on marriage) E–Visa from the Thai Embassy in London, then it will be much easier to open a Thai bank account by yourself

Don't forget to get a fresh copy of your Thai Marriage Certificate ( คร. 22 / " Kor Ror. 22 " ) at any Thai District Office as many Thai Immigration Offices would need that as part of your Extension application process
John *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Dca ****
is that just a photocopy or does it require a meeting in the bureau with signatures etc?

I guess we would have 8 weeks to do this priot to applying for the extension.

Is CW a pain for extensions based on marriage?
Kool *******
@John ********
you need copies of the marriage certificate, and registration document, copies of the wife's ID card front and back, and copies of the Thai house book she is listed in, then copies of your passport, and personal bank statement showing a bt400,000 equivalent balance, to apply for the type O 90 day visa from the Thai embassy before you come to Thailand.
John *********

@Kool ******
what if the house which the house book is registered to, has been knocked down? 18 months ago my wifes brother and his local village helpers(and me chipping in) we demolished the house with a view to rebuilding.

Does thix mean we have to find rented accommodation to count to the marriage visa?
Kool *******
@John ********
your wife is listed in a house book. It is not meant to show where she lives. It is further proof she is a Thai citizen. It is required.
John *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Kool ******
just make sure im not talking about something different… you are referring to uploading documents for obtaining Type-O 90 days visa in the UK (by submitting house book) and not when applying for 12 month extension based on marriage within Thailand? That is when I thought we would have to sumbit photos in and out the house plus ghe drawn map.
Kool *******
@John ********
a totally different document. It has absolutely nothing to do with where you live, or are going to live. As a Thai citizen your wife was listed in a house book. A copy of that listing is required for the original 90 day visa, AND required for the one year extension. The lease of where you live, and pictures, have absolutely nothing to do with the house book she is listed in. She should know all about it, or her relatives do.
John *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Kool ******
ok understood. But when i do apply for 12 month extension, OK we can still show the house book, but it was more a question of submitting other ‘house photos’ (or rented apartment) showing we are living together. It is highly likey we will be in Punnawitti area of BKK.

So we have my wifes housebook, her Naambat, thai and UK passport, and our marriage certificates (all in Thai as we married in BKK)

I guess we have to go to chaeng Wattana
Kool *******
@John ********
after you get to Bangkok on the type O 90 day visa immediately open a Thai bank account in your name only, then go to immigration at Chaing Wattana, with your wife, and get the list of required documents, and pictures needed for your one year extension after the bt400,000+ has been in that bank account for at least two months, giving you time to get the rest of the documents required. Every time you go to immigration concerning your marriage visa extension always take your wife with you, or they won't talk to you, as they will tell her things in Thai that are not on the list, but required. That is how you do it. Don't try to overthink it. I'm still not sure you understand about the housebook she is listed in as a Thai citizen.
Reinhard ********
@Dca ****
I took the original from Bang Rak in 1990.Worked!For the extention a copy is enough.But this can be different in every province.77 provinces and every place cooks it's own soup,like we say in Germany.
Dca *****
@Reinhard *******
Yes, unfortunately, more and more local Thai Immigration Offices want a "fresh copy" of the คร.22 /Kor Ror. 22, but great that your Thai Immigration Office takes only just the original!
Peter *******
1 option is to enter on a tourist stamp and go to an agent to get your non O visa for 3 months and then get your marriage visa.

Get e, o-visa marriage from UK use uk bank details £10,000 plus ,you may have to do one for you ,

if your wife is thai she will not need one

, my money is in a thai bank account I show that to uk thai embassy as it can be in the UK or thai bank
John *********

my regular savings account id hovering around £5,000 as I transfer money into higher interest accounts such as ISA and fixed bonds. Can the statements from those accounts be counted towards my acceptance for having 400,000 THB? Means i have to upload : separate statements. Will slso have 25% tax free pension lump sum needed
Neil ********
@Colin ********
Colin. I always thought the required money had to be in a Thai bank account. I have a 5 year OX and when Income tonnes in 2.5 years can I have the money in a UK account if I apply for the extension when I am back in the UK
Colin *********
@Neil *******
only for the first online o-visa application in uk than move the money to the thai bank account you get as soon as possible when you get to Thailand it has to be in the account for 2months first time of application,"marriage "three months 400,000 buats
Colin *********
Not rich ,used it in the thai bank as application in UK said it could be in a uk or thai bank for o visa application then apply for the yearly extention using the 400,000 buats in thai bank account which was already in the account (400,000 buats must be careful not to fall under the 400,000 buats if possible)but must be there for three months before renewal)be aware of the cost of withdrawing and account charges not shore how much?and debit card charges? 300 buats ok pal
Graham ******
@Peter ******
the worst option ;)
Colin *********
Colin *********
You can not get the o -visa in side of Thailand
Chris *******
