Should I apply for a retirement (Non-O) visa in the UK or Thailand, and what are the necessary requirements?

Hi, Im planning on retiring in Thailand, i've lived / worked there before so just a few questions.

Is it better to apply for the retirement (non imm O) visa before I come or just come on a 60day Tourist visa and progress from there? Only ask as I noticed that if I apply from home (uk) you need to show £10,000 in bank for 3 months before (I have it, but need to do some transferring) is that necessary if I do it in thailand? Also I see you need a notorised certificate of health, try getting that in uk - no way. Its not possible to just go to a docs and get a bespoke certificate covering the thai medical requiremts - had anyone done that or got A/O from the UK? Was it easy, what did you do about med check and Police check?

Also I noticed that Bangkok Bank require proof of address in home country and thailand - so i just use my old address or some mates address in uk? Im guessing its just paperwork and not so importsnt to give uk address (Im selling so wont have a uk address).

Also they may want a reference letter from my bank via WISE, what is that exactly? I guess the ref. letter from the embassy in thailand is the best / easiest option for that but just seen they dont do those any more for us/uk?

Also it says they (bank) need addresses not from hotels, so its important to get an appartment pretty quickly right? Might be more difficult as i'll still be on Tourist Visa?

Also, is the Wise tranfer a simple process as i'll be going the 800k bhat in bank route...

Any other advice welcome, but if ur gonna troll or flame please at least make it funny as I prefer some thought in the trolling!

Thx my dear estemed peers.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the best approach for applying for a retirement (Non-O) visa to live in Thailand. The author contemplates whether to apply in the UK or enter on a tourist visa and apply within Thailand. Key issues raised include financial proof, necessity of a medical certificate and police check, bank account requirements, and how to transfer funds. Various user comments provide insights on individual experiences, suggesting that applying from the UK may be simpler for some but outline challenges in obtaining medical documents. The general consensus leans towards a straightforward process once in Thailand, contingent on fulfilling financial criteria and securing local banking services.

Hi James I’m a U.K. qualified financial adviser who lives here and also has a Bangkok bank account

The easiest place is the corporate headquarters in Silom

Huge place and if you go walk down the banking hall turn right at the end there’s a big place for accounts etc

All you need is a certified copy of your passport which you can get from the embassy, book the appointment online go in and it’s done in about 15 mins, proof of residence and that’s it. You can open with a tr visa if you wish but also definitely with the retirement visa.

Choose the Mastercard option for your debit card as it has more uses than the rabbit card from memory you pay about 400 baht £10 for it.

Anything else dm me and I’ll help in anyway I can

depends but the main Bangkok bank said they wanted both so rather than waste my time going back and forth I jsut took both. Even if you’re staying in a hotel you can just take a letter from the hotel saying how long you’re there for. They told us that last month when I took a colleague to open one

thx mate...

So you needed both the certified copy of PP AND the residence cert from immigration? Seems most are just using the residence cert. And good point about ret visa (non-o) if i have that by getting it in UK first they should accept that no problems? Thx

STEP-BY-STEP DO-IT-YOURSELF INSTRUCTIONS -- APPLYING FOR RETIREMENT STAY AFTER ARRIVAL IN THAILAND (Must be over age 50): i. You may arrive either Visa Exempt (currently 45-days), or on a 60-day Tourist Visa. ii. Then, immediately after your arrival, you must promptly open a Thai Bank Account, and transfer 800,000 Baht into Thai Bank Account (if married, some Immig. Offices like CM, accept Joint Account with 1.6 Mil. Baht. Also Note, that either Passbook Savings or Fixed Deposit is acceptable, but not Investment Account. Finally note, that some Immig. Offices, but not all - e.g. CM, require proof of foreign source of funds. WISE is an inexpensive, easy & reliable service to transfer funds). iii. Then, you apply for a 90-day Non-O Visa at local Thai Immigration Office. If on Visa Exempt, you use Form TM87, if on Tourist Visa TM86. You are required to apply with minimum 15-21 days remaining on permitted Stay, depending on Office (Chiang Mai, requires 21 days). Requirements: TM87 or TM86 (Note: Fear not, only 1-page Form simple to fill out in English with only basic info., name, address, passport info., arrival info, and stated purpose: "For Retirement"), Must be Over Age 50, 2000 Baht, Copy of all relevant pages of Passport (i.e. Facepage, and Entry Stamp); copy of TM30 (that is the required arrival form that is either completed by your Hotel or Condo, or you do yourself at Immig. Office w/i 24 hrs of arrival); copy of proof of residency (Rental Agreement, or Hotel Reservation -- some offices may not allow if only staying at a HOtel); and most importantly proof of the money in Bank (Copy of Bank Book, and a certified Letter from the Bank usually costing 100 Baht). Above is all simple and straightforward, so no need for spending money on a Visa Service. iv. If all docs. in order, Immig. Office will put a Sticker in your Passport that you are "under consideration", and a date to return to pick up your Visa Stamp (prior to your Stay expiration). v. Next, when you have 30 days remaining on the Non-O (and your Bank Money has "seeded" 60 days -- i.e. stayed on deposit), you go back to Immig. Office to apply for the 1-yr Retirement Extension. Requirements.: TM7 (Req. for Extension of Stay); 1900 Baht, and all other same docs. as above (newly updated of course). And, you will receive 1-yr Extension of Stay -- usually same day, if you arrive in morning. Note: For both processes above, your Bank Passbook Balance must be updated same date as application, and the Bank Letter should be no more than 7 days old -- easiest just to do both same day just before going to Immig. Office). vi. Finally, you should/must get a Re-Entry Stamp -- easiest/best to just do immediately after you get your 1-yr. Extension stamp. It can be single Re-Entry for 1000 Baht, or 3800 Baht for unlimited multiple Re-Entry. The Re-Entry Stamp allows you to leave and return to Thailand, without invalidating your 1-yr Extension. If you fail to do that, then your Extension of Stay is nullified, and you must start the process again. (IMPORTANT: If you want or need to leave Thailand while on the initial 90-Day Non-O, same thing -- must get Re-Entry Stamp.). Hope that is all clear.

I got an OA in uk a pain. I was lucky my Doctor said they don't do medical certificates he did a persnal one and said give a tip for the nurses Christmas party. I'm going to cancel it and get an O in Thailand so I don't need insurance and change my renewal date. I made mistake my OA extension is in July UK summer. I can get better insurance from uk on an O visa.
James **************
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Kevin *******
you dont need that if you get O from uk as those other posts say. The police check / medical etc are for the OA only. I didnt realise you can get O from UK, London...
Kevin ********
@James *************
It's just info I've read. I read not need police certification here. In uk had to pay lawyer to sign docs. Pay 2 nights hotel London train fair. Easier in Thailand.

I don't think you can.

@Kevin *******
yep seems like it, why didnt you get an O from the uk?
David *******
You don’t need a Medical Certificate nor a Police Check to get a Non O visa only for a Non O-A.

Getting a Non O from RTE London is easy. I got one last September. Bank statement, insurance, flight, hotel booking.

I just transfer from my U.K. account to my Thai account directly. I’m not bothered by a small difference in rates. Wise is popular but I understand it doesn’t always show as an overseas transfer (??) so you’ll need to check. Others will know more than me.
David *******
@James *************
I bought annual travel insurance with a European company but through a Thai broker. It met the requirements and the broker gave me a 1-page summary to satisfy the Embassy.

Did you get health insurance for the 90 days o visa and then one in thailand for the rest of it?

To get the Non O in the U.K. you need £10k in a U.K. bank account for 3 months - or show you get a pension. It’s meant to be a State Pension but I showed an occupational pension.

You’ll need 800k in a Thai bank account soon after you arrive in Thailand. You get 3 months on entry and then extend for 12 months. You do that each year. After the first one, you need 800k in a Thai account for 3 months before and after extension and 400k the rest of the year - unless you use an agent!

You don’t need insurance for Extension of Non O but you do need it for extension of a Non O-A.

@David ******
ok, cheers, from what I was reading it seemed like the non O was within thailand only and the non O-A was the only option from here (UK)! My misunderstanding.

So its obviously much easier to get a non O from here as you did. Ok thats good news. I assume I need the 800k + in the bank. Is it the same requiremnt of having the £ in the account

months before or didnt they worry aboit that? How long did it take? As i cant get flight tickets until ive sold up! Id need somewhere to stay! Ha ha

Cheers
Steve *******
Much easier to get it in the UK. You need to show around £20k, 800,000bt in a Thai bank to get it in Thailand.
Robert ************
@Steve ******
Really? Which ones? FYI -- My wife and I, along with countless other Ex Pats, have successfully done it the way I've suggested.
Steve *******
@Robert ***********
We shall have to agree to disagree but many of your arguments dont hold up.
Robert ************
@Steve ******
I shall; and we've had this Debate already. Very close call. i. No Proof of Money Transfer req'd by some Immig. Offices change to Non-O --e.g. Chiang Mai. And, those Immig. Offices that do require it, will require either way 2 months later when same "Bloke" applies for 1-yr Extension! ii. Onward Travel requirement is a "Red Herring" that all folks arriving Visa Exempt contend with, and may "get around it" by booking Fully Refundable Ticket, and simply cancelling upon arrival (or using travel website that permits cancellation within 24-48 hrs, and cancelling upon arrival). iii. "Time wasted at Immig" equivalent to "Time Wasted dealing with foreign Embassy". Comme ci, comme ça.
Steve *******
@Robert ***********
Disagree all you like. So much easier in your home country, no proof of money transfer, no onward travel needed, less paperwork and no time wasted on an extra visit to Immigration, 90 days on entry.
Robert ************
@Steve ******
I disagree. See my Post for Step by Step Instructions on getting Retirement after arrival.

Ok i just realised I can do that. The way all these web sites are portaying it as if its a choice between O if already in thailand and O-A if in uk! So yep ill defo do the O from RTE in Laaandan. Sweet

@James *************
That's the OA! GET the O in the UK NOT the OA!

Prob also for me is the flight tickets as i cant prebook them, cos im selling and i cant accurately forecast completion date. I wouldnt hv anywhere to stay whilst i waited....

No.3 is almost impossible to get in uk. I tried before for a job in china, the doc didnt hv a clue anf yiu cant just turn up and ask for a bespoke medical test...and then the notorisation! That alone makes it not easy / impossible in uk.

So how did you get the medical cert?

Hi also from the UK. I arrived on a tourist visa,got a 30 day extension and then change to non O retirement. The most difficult part is finding a bank branch that will open an account for you. The rest is simply photocopying regular documents. 🙏
