What should German passport holders enter for the 'place of issue' on forms?

Question for German passport holders: what to enter for “place of issue”?

I’m filling out the form that asks for the *“place of issue”* of my passport.

In a German passport, there doesn’t seem to be a clear place listed.

What is the correct thing to enter here?

* the issuing authority (e.g. Bürgeramt XY)?

* simply Germany?

* or an actual city like Berlin / Munich?

What did you put, or what is usually expected?

Thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary

Mixed experiences have been noted, and some recommend checking with the embassy for clarity.

I tend to enter the issuing authority. In a way, that’s also a kind of place. There isn’t an explicit “place of issue” stated in the passport. And somehow everyone says something different. Unfortunately, I don’t live in Cologne.

I’m

Australian and I Australia.

There has been mixed reviews of people writing different things.

Like MOFA , Germany / city etc with mixed rejections etc.

I would highly recommend if you are concerned to reach out to your embassy first
