ORIGINAL POSTER
My daughter, (27 year old USA citizen) is considering trying to get a student visa through a Thai language school in the Bangkok area.

She is already fluent in Thai except she wants to study reading & writing a few hours per week.

She is looking for a visa without being in class “full time”.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is seeking advice for their daughter, a 27-year-old USA citizen fluent in Thai, who wishes to obtain a student visa to study reading and writing at a Thai language school in Bangkok. However, the community responses indicate that to secure an ED visa, students are generally required to attend classes full time (minimum of 3 hours a day for 5 days per week), with schools facing scrutiny from immigration officials. Some commenters suggest that the educational visa can be difficult to obtain without committing to full-time study, and advise considering alternative forms of learning if part-time study is desired.

AUA Language School, Rajadamri. But probably full time study only to get the visa.

Depends on where she gets her visa, in Bangkok It isn't "full-time" or "part-time" anymore it's based on visa length. 3-6 month study time is a minimum of 2 days a week 3 hours per day. 6-12 month visa is 5 days per week 3 hours per day.

They are coming down hard on ED visas because of the continued abuse. Immigration does random visits to the school and I've even heard of cases where they have turned up several times in one week.

For the record I have an education visa in hua hin and I’m required to to 2x 2 hour sessions per week, so I’m sure there will be similar options in Bangkok. Don’t listen to all these twats that have an inflated idea of self-importance

Stefan Williams how much was your visa
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
that includes 80 hours of lessons
Paul ********
@Stefan *********
Stefan Williams which school are you with please and how long can you study is it 12 months
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
it’s called TLC in hua hin, you get a year visa, 20 hours is a 5 week block so you get 4 x 5 week blocks included, if you want more then you pay extra
Paul ********
@Stefan *********
so it's only 5 months
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
5 months of lessons yes, but the visa is 1 year. And you don’t have to buy more lessons after you’ve completed the 80 hours included
Paul ********
@Stefan *********
so what do you do for the remaining 7 months surely you have to study its an Ed visa
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
we’re in Thailand… “surely you have to…” doesn’t apply
Paul ********
@Stefan *********
sorry for all the questions I am thinking about doing it. So you just enjoy thailand for 7 months then leave did you enter on a ed visa or tourist visa
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
rule of thumb is the school and immigration need about 5 weeks remaining on your visa to get all the paperwork and stuff sortwd
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
you can also enter on 30 day visa exempt stamp and get a 30 day extension then go get the education visa
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
enter on a 60 day tourist visa and go to the school with your passport and they’ll sort it out
Paul ********
@Stefan *********
can I ask what you will do after the 12 months
Stefan **********
@Paul *******
can get an education visa for up to 3 years I believe. Not at that stage yet so I can’t enlighten you with the details because I don’t know them myself

@Stefan *********
thank you 😊

What does she look like, if she's FAP she's stamped 'n approved 🙏

Sorry for your daughter but it doesn't work that way. She can do an online course from her country if she "really" wants to learn.
Daniel *****
Full time is or was only 3 days x 3 hrs per week
Damo ***********
So she wants to study 36 minutes a day and be allowed to stay for 1 year?

Not sure the ED visa was designed for that.
Stefan **********
@Damo **********
you’re just a full time 🔔end aren’t you😂😂
Karel ***********
Not possible anymore. You have to attend classes.
Bob **********
With an ED visa the requirements are you go to class I’m sure there are many schools that can accommodate her
John **********
The days of getting an ED visa as a means of staying in Thailand are gone. You now have to study and attend class

@John *********
not in Hua Hin.

@John *********
Good, thats how it should be! :)

They are a real school. They're really teaching you so it is rather not only for visa purposes and in Bangkok immigration officers are coming to school to check attendaces of students so it can be tough to get education visa without attending to school and really learning.

Duke Language School is the best and you learn a lot. But it's only for serious students at 3 hours per day, 5 days per week.

Yes and one of their locations is at the Trendy Building located on Sukhumvit Soi 13 with easy access to both the BTS Nana Station or MRT Sukhumvit Station not far from Terminal 21.
