I went on the US State Dept website to look for document of affirmation of eligibility for marriage. And got this” No such government-issued document exists in the United States. You may execute such an affidavit at a U.S. embassy or consulate. The U.S. embassy or consulate cannot attest to your marital status. However, most countries will accept a statement from you regarding your ability to marry if your signature on the affidavit has been notarized by a U.S. consular officer.” Any one from US able to tell me what the actual process was? Is there anything I can start while still in the states ? Or should I just wait till I’m there? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain an affirmation of eligibility for marriage while in the United States, you can start by scheduling an appointment with the U.S. embassy or consulate in Thailand. Although an official document from the U.S. government does not exist, you can create an affidavit stating your marital status. It's advised to prepare a draft form beforehand and provide any necessary supporting documents, although they may not always be requested. The signature on the affidavit needs to be notarized by a consular officer.

I believe I downloaded the blank affidavit form from the US embassy website, Citizen Services. You can compose what you want to say ahead of time and print it out. I brought divorce papers but they didn’t ask for them. The notary will notarize anything you want to say.

You will need to schedule an appointment online to do this. Schedule the appointment on the American Embassy website in Thailand.

I’m going to be going through Bangkok on the way way to Koh kood and then for 3 days on the way back. So I can go online and schedule an appointment? What do I need to bring , tax returns, and divorce papers? And then when I have documents I go apply for marriage visa ? Thanks

Forgot to add as soon as you arrive in Thailand open up a bank account and deposit 400k baht into it. This is one of the requirements for a marriage visa. It has to be in the bank account for two whole months before you can apply for the 1 year extension. The US Embassy no longer certifies income so 400k baht is what is required.

Sorry for all the questions. If I get everything done in Bangkok and open account at the same time is there a time limit on any documentation I have completed. At the end of 2 month account seasoning I will be clear for visa? Thanks again

Check with the Immigration office for their requirements. For the initial 90 day Non O, didn't need the money seasoned for two months. I only needed it seasoned for the 1 year extension. You can DM me if you need too.

sorry was at the hospital. You should be good to go. You can get married once you get your passport and Affadavit done. I assume you are here on Visa exempt, if so get your 30 day extension at Immigration. I don't know how long it will take to get married though. Some people say they had to wait weeks to get an appointment at the district office. I never did make an appointment, we just went to the district office in Khon Kaen, gave them the paperwork and was legally married the same day.

yes go online and make an appointment. I brought my passport and divorce paper with me just in case. I also had them certify my passport as that is what my district office wanted. Once you get it done it will have to be translated into Thai and certified by the Thai MFA, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. I gave the affadavit and passport to an agent who translated it and they had it certified by the MFA for me. I think I paid them somewhere between 2000 - 3000 baht. The US Embassy charges 50 dollars for the affadavit and passport certification. When you have your documents together you get married then go to Immigration and apply for your 90 day Non O visa based on Marriage. Also get their list of requirements for the 1 year marraige extension. Yes, there is a lot of paperwork involved.

not true. He can get the affirmation affadavit at the American Embassy and/or Counsulate in Thailand All it is, is a statement from him sworn to the Embassy official, that he is single and free to get married. I know because that is what I did.

oh, no problem Chuck. I make mistakes too. Lolol

You can only do this from the states and it’s from the department of state and it’s an authentication of your marriage certificate. The turn around for me was 9 weeks.

I got my affidavit of freedom to marry from the US Citizen Services office at the embassy in Bangkok. I made an appointment and got the affidavit at that appointment.
