I was just wondering who here has recently applied for the affirmation of freedom to marry from the British embassy?

I'm going to have to do it soon and I just had a few questions.

I've had a browse on the .gov website and even went a few steps into the application by but didn't get far as I do not need to apply yet

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the process of applying for the affirmation of freedom to marry from the British embassy in Thailand. Users share their experiences, emphasizing the lengthy appointment wait times and the specific days the embassy processes applications (Tuesdays and Thursdays). There are suggestions about engaging an agent for assistance, who can help with paperwork and possibly reduce the required stay in Bangkok. Additionally, one user mentions extra costs associated with certified translations.

Did it last year. They only do it on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Meaning if you get it done Tuesday morning, and can get the translated paperwork to the MFA by 3pm, you can pick up approvals on the following Monday. They take 3 working days to rubberstamp, no express service anymore.

The agent can handle the paperwork, collect from you when the affirmation "ceremony" (aka hanging around a waiting room). I was using a Bangkok amphur, so hung around Bangkok. I think this is actually a good example of an agent being useful, as it's then down to them if there are screw ups in the translation etc. But the agent then charged me extra for a certified translated copy of the marriage certificate, which you don't need in the UK. A bit cheeky, nut what the hey.

I can recommend a very good agent who we used. No need to stay in Bangkok.

You will only be required to turn up at the Embassy and then turn up at the District Office to be married.

you need an appointment at MFA also.

I would recommend using an agent for this service (I never use agents normally).

Without an agent unless you are very organised, you will end up back and forth to Bkk.

Someone is recommending one in the thread, it might be worth seeing how much they charge.

We were offered this service when getting our documents translated at the MFA and I refused, I wish I had accepted their offer as it was not a lot of money and would have saved us a lot of time, travel and hassle.

At the district office in Bkk you will also need an interpreter and witness. The agent also organises this.

Whatever you decide, I wish you and your wife lots of happiness.
