Hi all. Where can you get The Letter of Affirmation of Freedom to Marry?

My fiancé is American. He needs to get The Letter of Affirmation of Freedom to Marry. He is in the USA at the moment and hopefully to get to Thailand under NON O-A visa. Thank you in advance for all advices.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain the Letter of Affirmation of Freedom to Marry from the US, your fiancé can apply at the US Embassy either in the USA or in Thailand. The embassy provides a form that must be filled out, which can then be translated into Thai. He will also need to present any divorce certificates from previous marriages if applicable. It is advised to check the US Embassy's website for detailed instructions and to ensure all documents are prepared in advance.

There is a form letter at the US embassy that he fills out, then takes it to be translated into Thai. Then takes the form letter, and the translation to the building next to the main street at the government offices way up in front of ChiangWattana to get the translation officially verified. This can be trying as they always seem to find an error in the translation, but most translators make corrections for free. A problem he can run into is if he has ever been divorced, as he will need that US document confirming the divorce. From my experience they do not check to confirm if a person was divorced, or not. This is the process I went through, and I can not remember if the form from the embassy had to be notarized, or not, but I think it did.

@Kool ******
, a letter needs to be stamped by the US embassy before translating, right?

, I can't remember that exactly, but I think it had to be notarized, yes.

@Kool ******
, I can translate a letter myself but the MFA will only accept the documents that are translated by a certified translator, I guessed.

That 'building next to the main street at the front of the Chaeng Wattana offices' is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

@Stan ******
if I remember right the translation verification is on the second floor. If I remember right.

I had mine done by a lady (there were a few of them) hanging around the lobby. Her office was just up the road. I paid her, forget how much but it wasn't a huge amount, and she did the lot. I just went to her office a few days later and job done.

, I used a lady up the street too for the translation, bt300, but she wanted another bt1500 to do it all, and I'm cheap that way, when I can do it myself. The motorbike drive out there is always fun...hehe.

Does not require to be married if he is applying for a OA visa. But to answer your question the US embassy in Bangkok can help you with this.

Thank you
@Rob *********
. We already planned to get married last May in Thailand but we weren't be able to get back because the Thai government doesn't issue tourist visa at the moment. The only way he could get into Thailand is applying for non-OA visa.

Got mine at US Embassy in Bangkok. Instructions are on their website. He also needs divorce certificates from prior marriages when you go to register the marriage.

Yes, he will need it when you get married in Thailand. He can get the affirmation from the American embassy in Thailand or get the affirmation while in America.

He doesn't need it for a non-OA visa. OA nothing to do with marriage. He just needs to be over 50.

I'm British and I got mine from a download from our government's website. maybe he should try his government website as a starting point. Other than that there might be some resources available from Google searches on American websites or forums.

Pretty sure he gets it in America. I’ve watched enough 90 day fiancé episodes to confirm this.

. Sure! 90 day fiancé used to be my favorite tv show too. Anfisa Nava is doing so well by herself now in America without her exhusband, Jorge 😉.
