TLDR : Answer Summary
The process for obtaining a 7-day extension of stay when canceling a work permit in Thailand involves applying for an extension, which is likely to be denied. After applying, you will receive a stamp allowing up to 7 days to leave the country. It’s crucial to note that the 7-day countdown begins on the day you apply. While initially, it was thought that the work permit must be cancelled first, a recent update indicated that this step may not be necessary and that a Thai individual must accompany you to cancel the permit. The complete process at immigration can be quick.

Update: I'd like to update this for anyone else in the same situation. I went to the Labor Bureau to cancel my work permit, and was told it was unnecessary to come there first. Additionally they told me I could not cancel the permit by myself: a Thai person must accompany me. So I went to immigration where everything

was correct: my current extension was cancelled, and I was given 7 days to leave the country, which is perfect. The process at immigration was finished quickly and before noon. Thank you everyone for your help.

You need to go cancel your wp first from what I recall then go to immigration and do what Ellie said.

Remember what Moderator Ellie said...the 7 days count begins on the Day you apply for the extension. Plan carefully your departure from Thailand.

It’s not an extension, it’s “application of extension denied” stamp. You just apply for an extension for whatever reason (most do for tourism reason for 30 days) when you apply for cancellation of your current extension based on employment. That application would be denied as you dont meet the requirements, they will stamp UP TO 7 days to leave the kingdom. That 7 days max will start on the day you apply.
