What is the easiest nearby Thai embassy to apply for a non-O visa from Malaysia or other countries?

Hello good people in Thailand,

My father came on a visa exempt stamp and we were going to get that converted to a non-O based on retirement in Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, some complications with the paperwork for our house meant that he couldn’t do this in time. Since we are needing to exit the country now anyway, we were thinking to apply for the non-O outside the country. I was told some places, including Malaysia, don’t do this anymore. What is currently the easiest nearby Thai embassy to go to for this (preferably with a non-stop flight from Chiang Mai)?

Thank you in advance for your advice

You could just come back into Thailand on another 30 day visa exemption then do a change of visa to an OA at the CM immigration office.

Why is that?

Not sure where you heard some don’t do it. Check their websites. If you meet the requirements you get the visa. Don’t know about direct flights to CM sorry. In KL you must book an appointment online prior to visiting. Penang you don’t.

yeah the OA visa can generally only be got from your home country or country of residence. I’ve not heard of any issues applying for a non O based on being over 50 in any regional consulates.

Stuart Cumming Thanks. It looks like that filename is dated as 2017. Perhaps things have changed? The websites for Singapore, Vietnam, and Malaysia all only list OA (for those country residents only) or O family. Phnom Penh is the only one I've seen so far that clearly lists the O based on retirement, but it has a 3 day processing.

The website for KL doesn't list the non-O based on retirement among the many visa requirement guides they provide (

-Visa-Requirements-I.html). The Penang site redirects to the KL site for visas. I'm not sure what that means or if it confirms what I was told.
