What are my best options for applying for a non-O visa after missing the 21-day deadline?

I just missed the 21 day window to apply for my non-O. The agent said I should go to a neighboring country and apply at the Thai embassy. But she could not tell me what it would cost, because each embassy charges different fees – is that true?

I don’t mind doing a bit of travel, and I don’t mind paying reasonable fees for a 90 day visa. I just want to make sure I don’t got caught in bureaucratic hassles. And I want to get away from smoke, so probably not Laos.

Recommendations? Hanoi is nice this time of year...

You have a couple choices,

You could just go to the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma and get another 30 day visa exempt entry stamp (which you could extend for 30 more days for 1900baht too)

OR

You can go to a thai consulate an apply for a 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Type O visa by supplying the documentation the consulate you're going to requires.

In Vientiane and Savannakhet a 90 day Non-O visa is 2000baht

In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh it's 80USD

In Kuala Lumpur and Penang it's 300 RM

Let me narrow the question a little.

Mostly, I want to know if people have had particularly good/bad experiences dealing with any of the nearby Thai Embassies.

I’m not trying to be secretive, but I don’t think the other details are important.

*I entered on a waiver, so this will be a new visa.

*Currently in ChiangMai, but we want to get away from the smoke for a while, so proximity is not a virtue.

Ok. So i just did this last week . In chiang mai. So with cm u need 21 days ur right.. thats just for processing. But the que in cm to hand in the " change lf visa status" application u need a que which is about 2-3 weeks just to hand in. So you deff could go get an extension then once u have ur extesion go to the 3rd floor and mke ur appt for application which will be end of feb... they will need 21 days for consideration so u should be fine date wise as long as u get an extension. Another option would be to go to bangkok . They process kn the day (as in no need to que tk hand in the application ) and they oy need 15 days for processing

okay. I do not have a visa, I am a US citizen on a visa waiver, which has already been extended once. I only have 20 days left on it, so I cannot apply for a visa here, unless I can extend it again.

If I have to do a visa run to get another 30 days, I might as well just go to an embassy and do the whole application there, right? Is it easier to apply from inside Thailand?

Just take a look at different Thai Embassies or Consulates in the area, type it in in Google, go to their website and read the fees. As far as I know all the fees are the same.
