TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the best and cheapest methods for expats to transport items from the UK to Bangkok, emphasizing that carrying items in a suitcase may be the easiest way to avoid high customs duties. Multiple comments suggest alternatives like buying items locally in Thailand, as shipping can incur significant import taxes. Some respondents share experiences with shipping companies and emphasize that certain electrical items, like power tools and gaming consoles, may result in additional fees at customs regardless of their age. Others recommend selling unused items in the UK and using the funds to purchase new ones in Thailand.

Buy in Thailand..Even if not new they will tax you new price. Beware if you are silly enough to bring that stuff to Thailand . No with it. + Postage is Very expensive

Thai electric is same as uk but the risk you take is at airport customs may stop you and charge import duty...i believe it dont matter how old the electrical items are they will still charge i think its to do with you not buying in thailand this was my experience but it may have changed as that was a while ago now
Nigel ********
Be careful because you'll have to pay duty on any power tool. And there was a problem with the batteries coming in a parcel by ship i sold everything electronically before moving. My boys brought their playstations with them in there back packs. We used 7 sea for shipping from uk they can help with everything very good 👍 😊
Nigel ********
Put everything at zero or near value on what you ship

Yes, sell everything you can and re-buy in Thailand for

A few years back I bought a PlayStation for a relative here from the U.K. sent it over was stuck in customs for ages and then got whacked with an outrageous duty cost on it.
John ********
Bring in your suitcase or else buy in Thailand or pay to much tax if you send it through the post
Archibald *********
@John *******
cannot bring batteries in checked luggage. All batteries have to be in a carry-on bag.
Pete *******
Sell everything and bring the cash into Thailand. Buy what you need here.
Michael ********
Cheapest way is in a suitcase otherwise you are going to get hammered on tax.

True story my dad sent my son a xmas present from UK it was a plan toy made in Thailand. We had to go pay tax to get it out of 800 baht. Toy bought in Thailand would have been 500 baht.

Buy here if you cannot carry.
Todd *********

Is that import duty tax...?

Brandon ************
Power tools might not work if the electricity is different.

You're going to get completely hosed with import duty.
Bas **********
@Brandon ***********
just carry them in your suitcase. No worries and they work perfectly
Michael ********
@Brandon ***********
UK is same as Thailand no problem with electrics
Phillip *********
@Michael *******
the outlets are different
Michael ********
@Phillip ********
Yes very aware of that, brandon was refering to the Voltage as he is from the North American continent which is completely different.
Phillip *********
@Michael *******
but the one asking the original question stated he is coming from the UK, not somewhere in North America
Michael ********
@Phillip ********
and sensible people install these sockets so makes no difference
Michael ********
@Phillip ********
I know, but Brandon is obviously not aware that UK and Thailand are the same voltage and i was just informing Brandon its the same. (He is moderator so assisting group) Then you butt in with this twaddle about plugs.
