TLDR : Answer Summary
When considering how to ship personal belongings to Thailand, many expats recommend minimizing what you bring or choosing alternatives like selling items. Options include using consolidated shipping services or transporting essential items via checked luggage when flying. Specific companies, like Send2Thai, are noted for their reliability and affordability. The conversations also highlight the potential complexities of customs regulations and the possible high costs associated with shipping. Ultimately, many suggest that purchasing items upon arrival could be cheaper and less hassle.

I’ve heard they even charge customs for old socks. Would be careful.

I just brought my roller skates, moustache wax and a neon green mankini. Everything seems to be going well so far.
Start a new life I'd recommend. Find out what you truly need. Thailand is incredibly cheaper, and you can find almost everything you need on Lazada, if not in the many local stores. And did I mention stuff was cheap? I just ordered a new toilet part for $1 on lazada, free shipping. The same exact piece on eBay in America was $20.

Depends where you live. We shipped a 24 - 27gal totes and a couple boxes that made up from Maryland to Chiang Mai for $1800.00
Don’t make jokes when I’am drinking coffee Pricilla….555. (By the way 555 means laugh out loud in thai)

is a convenience store. Here and around the world. But Thailand seriously has 30,000 (thirty thousand) stores. About every block or two. Watch Thai videos and you’ll see them everywhere. It’s food, cell phone bills, electric bills, open 24 hours, many tourists. The joke is the Thai government would shut down without seven eleven s. On hot days stray dogs hang out in front of the automatic doors to catch a blast of air conditioning……
I just was in Chiang Mai for almost a month. I see dogs 🐕 laying down everywhere including the middle of the roads. Interesting tidbit about dogs lying down near the doors

well depends on how you want to look at the cost. you could look at the cost as just being shipping a 50 lb box through United Post office and thaipost. that would be about $300 per 50 lb box with certain dimension restrictions. you also need to look up what is considered to be import duty eligible goods. you will also need to factor in the cost of this tax which is not set but at the discretion of the import official. sometimes that works in your favor, sometimes it does not. I have heard some horror stories about the majors UPS DHL etc. so I would avoid those for importing goods. another avenue is bringing it with you on the plane from Las Vegas. it can be more expensive and it can be cheaper. Good luck!

Need to ship some boxes from Singapore to BKK, has anyone done that before and give wine advice?

If you go to Thailand for 6 months or more then send your stuff 300% tax
what do you need to travel with cats, extra shots and any kind of pills to help them relax for the long flight. Is there a service that you are using? Moving in a few months from las vegas?
this is the carrier I am buying big cat on one side and small cat on other and litter in the middle. You have to get cats spayed/neutered and microchipped. You have to do a lot of paperwork with the USDA. I’m still researching this. Gabapentin for keeping them chill!
thank you. I will start getting a vet appointment this week

We used this place in NYC, and shipped a ton of boxed stuff (went by boat, very slow, but reliable and didn't lose anything)

We just shipped 23 27gal bins from Baltimore Maryland for in June for $1200. They arrived in a month to Bangkok, then they delivered them to my wife's uncle's house in Chiang Mai in August after my wife arrived..
bringing my favorite beer mug helped me integrate into pub culture😎

I wanted my golf clubs shipped from Florida. One set of clubs packed with a golf bag and a second set of just clubs all in one box cost me $1400 to ship plus $300 duty fee. These clubs were about 10 years old. I won’t ever do that again.
I did not know what to do. My wife and I were moving to Thailand 2 years ago. We planned to take 4 suitcases in checked luggage. I wasn’t sure how to get my golf clubs with us. Because we already had the 4 suitcases, we thought it would be better to ship the clubs over. The internet was not much help as to how to pack the clubs for shipment and how to deal with Thai customs. Ultimately my daughter packed one golf bag and both sets of clubs all in one box. The shipping company screwed up big time because the clubs arrived in Bangkok and subsequently returned them back to Florida. The tracking info alerted me to the problem so we contacted the shipping company to return the clubs to Thailand and ultimately to my home. Then we got hit with the $1400 shipping charge and the $300 duty fee. The clubs arrived in good condition but it was a nightmare experience.
I recommend Jamie to just google the price of a fridge in Thailand and compare with his local price. He will be surprised

Cheapest way is not to ship any.
I tried and there is very limited company that will ship personal effect from US to Thailand. And for regular stuff its cheaper to replenish here than ship them.

This is a pure American idea(sometimes european). I would never under any circumstances ship any furniture to anywhere in the world. I travel and wherever I arrive there are furnished apartments. there are obviously furnished hotels, there is no need to waste so much money on old furniture that is not worth it! Too much junk.
true. That and storage are weird american things for sure

Dont listen to all the negative statements you get on here. Just ask yourself these ?s 1st. Will it be cheaper to but there and replace? The things you are bringing have more then money value to you? We all look at things differently so what one person says will be different for you. Also keep in mind all the cost to ship there. The shipping container is the way to go. You can ship alot for the money value but its not cheap!

Absolutely don’t do it. Bring as little as possible. Saves you wasted time, money thrown in the garbage and happiness.
I’m doing the exact same next month from Las Vegas to Thailand — 3 large suitcases. Instead of shipping, am flying business class which allows 3 checked suitcases.
Otherwise Thai customs can be a hassle when shipping.

I just go back from my third trip to Chiang Mai since November of 2022. I have a Thai fiance and we tried to apply for a K1 fiance visa and gave up finally. LSS Now I am moving there 'permanently'
sorry that didn’t work for you . I married a Thai lady but did a marriage visa and got her here to USA. Took about 15 months though. But we do plan on retiring back in Thailand in 5 or so years . Good luck .

Ok thanks for all your suggestions! Now that I have a few suggestions, I probably will sell or give away stuff and pack the rest in 2 - 4 checked bags and one carry on + personal small bag.
I was 7kg over once they wanted £300 odd . No way is airlines cheaper . As for giving stuff away because you can get clothes over there . True but not the same quality and style . Even if you buy from the markets it still all adds up . Better off bringing your quality kit across .IMO
Been looking into this myself as moving for retirement, shipping is not the cheapest but the tax duty on top seems to be open to customs what they charge you, but at minimum it is extortionate.besides clothes and a few electrical items I’m packing my pc in a large suitcase and fingers crossed it won’t be damaged.
Shipping from Las Vegas, NV small light articles like a box of clothing and a PS3 with games. Otherwise I will have to pay the airlines for 4 checked bags. Maybe the airlines will be cheaper?
Depends on the ticketing and airlines. If you use an online booking site that breaks up your flight legs into separate tickets, you well could shafted on the first leg of LAS to LAX/SFO/...or wherever. Southwest, Frontier, Spirit all charge extra for each check-in bag. The transpacific leg will usually allow two free checked bags of 22-25kg. But then your final leg to Bangkok could be on cheapie carrier again, like VietJet or AirAsia. Try to book all the way through on a single ticket unless the airfares are dramatically different.
Last month I flew from BKK to LAS and it was on ANA which codeshares with American. Two free checked bags at 25kg each all the way through.

I've been paying for extra luggage every time I come back. Move important stuff every trip. Far cheaper and not having to deal with border customs bribes, excessive import fees, and "disappearing" shipments. You can get pretty much anything. Depending on your size and if you like certain brands, bring with you as thais are small. I personally have a hard time finding clothes that fit how I like and a couple brands so I bring some stuff with me. Electronics buy here.
a PS3 from the US might not work in Thailand, for sure the electricity is different and would need a converter and POSSIBLY the video format (NTSC vs PAL) would not work on Thai televisions.. I would say just bring the games and you can find a used PS3 on facebook marketplace. clothes is cheap here and used clothes is even cheaper, don’t bother bringing alot of clothes when you can buy here. But yes it would be cheaper to pay extra baggage fees when you fly in than trying to ship it.
My play station worked fine. No format or electrical issues. So did my 70 inch wide screen tv. Most electronics work fine with the exception of electric shavers and blow driers unless they are designed for dual voltage. Air fryers also don’t work with out a 2000W transformer
Plus the malls have plenty of Play Stations and games available .

From the west coast of America, look at Send 2 Thai I used them and everything arrived as scheduled. They were even able to change the destination address before the ship arrived in Thailand.
Import taxes whereby the officer will class every single item as 'a luxury' will leave you with a huge bill or you can just do what they want you to do and give it all up to them...that's how it works.
Even if you are married to a Thai I think from memory they have to have been living with you in your country about 2 years for them to claim exemption. Either way it's not worth the headache.
A person new to Thailand can get a one-time exemption to import personal effects duty free.
OP: Others are correct that it's probably better to buy in TH what you find you need. But you can look up the rules to comply with the exemption and send (or bring) some things that way without paying duties. There's a time limit and a value limit, but it's worth looking into now as it's a one-time thing.
I spent extensive time researching at the time and everything I saw made it pretty impossible due to the import taxes. I would be interested in reading any link you have to this information.
Electronics like cellphones, laptops, etc. will be okay. But plug-in electric razors, monitors, etc. most likely won't work. Need to check the listed voltage on whatever device one considers bringing.
, I relocated and brought lots of equipments like musical amps microwave etc. I ended up buying step up transformers not cheap and inconvenient. Yes, check the back label of your devices. Most devices can.
Yeah, a guitar amp or microwave will most likely be made only for the electrical grid of the country where it was sold. But phones, iPads, laptops, *rechargeable* razors are usually compatible around the globe. A plug-in/corded razor, mixers, etc. will not work even with a voltage converter. Anything with a motor requires that the hertz match, too. I found out the hard way when I paid for a converter and my clippers still didn't work. The noise they gave off because the hertz was misatched sounded like armageddon.
yes, I had to sell my belongings too. I'm in nyc, it cost too much to ship. I thought I'd ship some of my things until I found out how much it was to ship. I know someone that shipped some contact lenses over and it cost her $250. It's the import/export taxes that'll get you. And I also have 4 suitcases
I’m from Las vegas there place Thai Bangkok market they ship the plastic containers. you can’t ship electronics. I remember the prices fairly reasonable shipping container and it takes two or three months
