TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around whether to move household goods from Australia to Thailand. Many participants advise against importing due to potential hassles and costs. They suggest selling belongings and buying new items in Thailand instead. Some recommend using a reliable shipping company like Asian Tigers for those who choose to ship. It's noted that shipping can be expensive, with customs duties being unpredictable. Ultimately, it's suggested to only bring items of sentimental value, as starting fresh in Thailand can be easier and more cost-effective.

Only bring those items with sentimental value, oh and good runners, otherwise you will be sorry 😞

All you need is a toothbrush and credit card.

Over the years we’ve done both. Shipped over a container load of stuff from NZ and had previously started fresh here. Pros and cons for both but would definitely go with the get rid of the stuff at home and start “afresh”. Ship over your personal stuff like photos and memorabilia but ditch the furniture and electronics like TVs and the like.

On a long term visa you’re allowed one shipment in “duty free” within 6 months of arrival. Except you aren’t. Customs will pick a figure out of the either of the amount of import duty you’re to pay. Accept it and move on. You can question it but then they’ll go through the shipment with a fine tooth comb and you can guarantee it’ll be more.

If you want to ship it use an agent like Asian Tigers (who were brilliant) but you’ll still end up paying thousands of baht in “extra” fees.

Put your stuff on ebay etc. Save yourself a ton of money. Put new funds towards buying new household goods when you get there

Totally agree with most of the comments, really not worth the cost to ship a container load over

I used Oz Post to send 4 x 20kg boxes of stuff I couldn’t bear to throw away - around AUD180 per box, arrived in a week and no duty charged

New life, new furniture. Leave the west behind.

I'm not trying to be negative, but I have to ask why would you go through the expense and risk of damage to transport household goods here? It's far easier / cheaper to sell up completely and buy what you need here.

Keep in mind any electrical goods will need adapters. Finding a home that will fit your existing furniture may be hard depending on area you are moving to and type of place.

Unless the things you are shipping are sentimental you really are better off selling everything and starting over.

It was really hard to do at the time - we sold everything and came over with carry on & laptops only and have found everything we needed here to be easy to find and cheaper than shipping costs - bonus, everything is new and suits the new surroundings.

Leave all non-essential in Perth and buy new stuff in Thailand.

Asian Tigers handled my shipment and duty costs. Don't listen to people that haven't done this, they don't know. My advice would be use an agent, do not try and do it alone, customs will have your pants down. Downside is international shipping is expensive right now. Get quotes and do your sums first, se if it's worth it.

Brought my “stuff” and wouldn’t do it any other way. It is a hassle but everything worked out and I got my tools, records, furnishings and everything else brought right to my home and delivered to the rooms and unpacked. Once the container reached Thailand a company called Boonma did everything and they were awesome. I didn’t initially contract with them but they took over here and I understand they can coordinate the whole process.

You will have so many people tell you don’t. While it is true you can get everything here it’s not the same. If what you’re bringing is high quality, bring it. Not so nice, easily replaceable. Depends what you have

Buy them in Thailand.

Don't. Importing will prove a nightmare. Anything you can't bring with you, buy there
